The UK, one of Ukraine’s biggest military supporters, has committed £12.8bn in military and civilian aid to Kyiv over the war and has trained tens of thousands of Ukrainian troops. Starmer is to announce another £40m for Ukraine’s postwar economic recovery.Britain says its 100-year pledge – which covers a number of areas, including defence, energy and trade – will help ensure Ukraine is “never again vulnerable to the kind of brutality inflicted on it by Russia”. Starmer’s surprise visit comes as Ukrainian forces continue to suffer from manpower shortages and are losing ground in the eastern Donetsk region as Russia’s troops continue their slow advance there.
