Aaron Judge home run record plaque gets stolen so many times it won’t be replaced anymore

[ad_1]

A plaque commemorating Aaron Judge’s historic 62nd home run of the 2022 season at Globe Life Field in Texas was stolen for the second time, and now will not be replaced again, according to WFAN’s Justin Shackil. Judge famously broke the American League single-season home run record against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field in the penultimate game of the 2022 season. Judge’s home run came in the first inning of a nightcap to a double header on the second to last day of the season. The ball, which broke the record last set by former Yankee Roger Maris in 1961, traveled to deep right field and was caught by 35-year-old Cory Youmans in section 31, row 1, seat 3.That’s where the plaque was located both times it was placed there, but now there’s just a dollop of cement where the tribute once stood. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMThe Rangers said a third plaque will not be put up, per Shackil. It is not the first theft of memorabilia from historic Yankees moments. In 2014, several of Yankees legend Yogi Berra’s World Series rings and two MVP plaques were stolen from a museum at the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center in Little Falls, New Jersey. 49ERS FIRST-ROUND PICK RICKY PEARSALL SHOT DURING ROBBERY ATTEMPT IN SAN FRANCISCOJudge and the Yankees return to Globe Life Field on Monday for a three-game series against the Rangers. Judge comes into the series on pace to challenge his 2022 home run record. Judge currently has 51 home runs with 25 games left in the season. At this point in 2022 Judge had already smacked 55 home runs, but Judge has been hitting a hotter pace than he did that year since the end of April, after an unusually slow start for the Yankees captain.Still, even if Judge is able to hit 60 this year, he would become the third player with multiple 60-homer seasons, joining Sammy Sosa (three) and Mark McGwire (two).Only two players in the history of the game have matched or exceeded each of Judge’s slash line totals from this season while also hitting at least 50 homers, and both came before MLB’s integration. Babe Ruth did it three times. The right-handed-hitting Jimmie Foxx did it once, for the 1932 Philadelphia Athletics. Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

WNBA Hall of Famer Sheryl Swoopes leaks screenshots of alleged texts with Caitlin Clark: ‘I made a mistake’

[ad_1]

WNBA Hall of Famer and current Dallas Sky broadcaster Sheryl Swoopes responded to a fan on X who accused her of being « unfair » to Caitlin Clark with screenshots of alleged text messages. Swoopes’ post on Monday showed three images of her messages with a contact named Caitlin Clark that she claims took place on Feb. 5. The first image showed Swoopes apologizing for an incorrect statement about the length of Clark’s college career earlier this year. »Hey Caitlin, I wanted to personally reach out to you and say I made a mistake on what year this is for you, COVID year has me all confused, » Swoopes wrote. « I also have nothing but respect for you and your game and appreciate your skill. Congrats on everything you have accomplished thus far. Be blessed. » CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMThe next two messages show Clark thanking Swoopes for reaching out and her contributions to the WNBA, and Swoopes returning another message that proclaimed appreciation. Swoopes’ apology was for an incorrect statement she issued in an appearance on the « Gil’s Arena, » podcast with former NBA star Gilbert Arenas in February. Swoopes incorrectly said that Clark stayed in college for five seasons and that she took over 40 shots per game while discussing the topic of how Clark broke the NCAA’s all-time basketball points record her senior year in 2023. But Clark played just four seasons while averaging just 22.7 shots per game en route to the record. She didn’t need a fifth year or even 22.3 shots per game to score the most points of any basketball player, men’s or women’s, in college history.Swoopes, who was the first player to be signed in the WNBA with the Houston Commets in 1997, was removed from her regular post as Dallas Wings color commentator for the team’s game against Clark’s Indiana Fever on Sunday. Swoopes has fired off several responses to posts on X that have referenced her interactions and previous statements on Clark since she was removed. CAITLIN CLARK’S HARSH RECEPTION BY THE WNBA IS ‘GOOD FOR THE GAME,’ ESPN’S HOLLY ROWE SAYSOutside of the incorrect statement on Clark’s collegiate career back in February, Swoopes has made several other comments about Clark that have drawn criticism. Swoopes recently praised Chicago Sky player Diamond DeShields after a game in which DeShields fouled Clark to the floor, committing a flagrant 1 foul. It was only the latest in a series of controversial fouls the Sky committed on Clark in their four meetings this year. Hours after DeShields committed the foul, she posted a screenshot of her notifications list on Instagram, which included a string of hate comments from a user referencing a spinal cord tumor DeShields overcame in 2020.Swoopes wrote, « Head up kid! Hate will not win!! You are covered and ain’t nothing these evil people can do about that. All love for you! » in a post on X in response to DeShileds after the Sky’s loss to Indiana on Friday. In an August episode of her podcast « Queens of the Court, » Swoopes did not name Clark as a reason for the recent improvement of the Fever. Swoopes only praised Aliyah Boston, Kelsey Mitchell and Lexie Hull. However, Clark has been the team’s leading scorer during its win stream, and is already one of the top scorers in the WNBA. ESPN host Stephen A. Smith responded to Swoopes’ statements in the episode and said the Hall of Famer was « insane to do that. » « Do you have any idea how that makes you look? » Smith said to Swoopes. Swoopes clapped back to Smith as soon as she could in a response on X. « You talk about whomever and whatever you want to on your podcast. Correct? So why can’t I? Also, did you listen to the ENTIRE episode? NOPE! I have a personal relationship with these players and they deserve recognition as well. »During Swoopes’ absence from the broadcast booth on Sunday, Clark put up 28 points and 12 assists to lead Indiana to its fourth straight win and six in its last seven games. Clark scored the 595th point of her career, surpassing WNBA legend Tamika Catchings for the most in a single season by a rookie in Fever history. She finished with 617 points as Sunday’s game ended.Clark has seemed to break a landmark record in every game she’s played in recently. In Friday’s game against the Sky, Clark had the first 30-point, 12-assist game in WNBA history while becoming just the fifth player, and first rookie, to record at least 30 points and 10 assists in a game. On top of that, Clark now has 12 double-doubles, which breaks the WNBA record for most double-doubles by a guard in a single season.Just three days before that, Clark set the record for most made 3-pointers by a WNBA record, surpassing the mark initially set by the Atlanta Dream’s Rhyne Howard. She was 3-of-12 from downtown and finished with 19 points, five rebounds and five assists as Indiana picked up its 15th win. That same night, she also became the first WNBA player to have at least 15 points, five rebounds and five assists in six consecutive WNBA games. It was her 10th straight game with at least 15 points and five rebounds, which put her in the elite club with Diana Taurasi as the players who have hit the mark.Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Joey Chestnut breaks world record in hot dog eating vs. Takeru Kobayashi 15 years after last meeting

[ad_1]

Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi renewed the most competitive rivalry in competitive eating on Monday in Netflix’s « Unfinished Beef » special, with Chestnut winning 83-67. Chestnut’s 83 hot dogs broke the world record for most eaten in 10 minutes, without dunking them in water, in the history of competitive eating. Chestnut won $100,000 in prize money. « I’ve been trying to hit 80 hot dogs for years, and without Kobayashi I was never able to, » Chestnut said after the contest. « He drive me, we weren’t always nice to eachother, but we push eachother to be our best. »Chestnut was the heavy favorite across most betting sites in, arguably, the most highly-anticipated competitive eating contest in the sports’ history. The special renewed a storied rivalry in the sport, as the two competitors, known as the two greatest competitive hot-dog eaters last faced off in 2009. Chestnut first competed at the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in 2005. In 2007, he won his first title, downing 66 hot dogs to dethrone Kobayashi, who had already won six titles, marking the start of the rivalry. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMKobayashi lost again to Chestnut again in 2008 and 2009. Then contractual dispute meant that Kobayashi was no longer able to compete at Coney Island, leaving Chestnut to win the next 16 times. But then this year, Chestnut was barred too for an endorsement deal. Chestn signed a sponsorship with Impossible Foods, which specializes in plant-based alternatives to meat products. Major League Eating has since walked back the ban, but Chestnut decided. Chestnut instead competed in Fort Bliss, Texas, for his Fourth of July feast and competed against Army soldiers. Chestnut ate 57 hot dogs and buns, outdoing four competitors combined, who tallied 49 hot dogs and buns in total.JOEY CHESTNUT BANNED FROM 2024 NATHAN’S HOT DOG EATING CONTEST OVER PARTNERSHIP WITH VEGAN WIENER COMPANYCompetitive eating is most popular in the United States, also in countries including Canada, Germany and Japan, but health experts have criticized it, and China banned it in 2021.Meanwhile Kobayash revealed in May in the Netflix documentary, « Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut, » that he was retiring from competitive eating after no longer feeling hungry and wondering « what damage I’ve done to my body » after estimating he’s consumed 10,000 hot dogs in his career. But after ceasing competitive eating for the past five years, he said on « TODAY, » the opportunity to scarf down hot dogs again with Chestnut « means a lot » because he’s retired.Chestnut now leads the head-to-head record between the two competitors, 4-2. Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

NY Times publishes guest essay saying DEI is ‘not working’ months after publishing essay saying it ‘works’

[ad_1]

Just over half a year after Harvard Business School professors published a guest essay in the New York Times saying that D.E.I. works, Stanford professors published a New York Times guest essay of their own admitting it doesn’t.The contrary pieces appear to suggest that, as time has gone on, not all proponents of leftwing academia are happy with the results of diversity, equity, and inclusivity quotas. The first headline read: « Critics of D.E.I. Forget That It Works. » The second, by contrast, concluded: « D.E.I. Is Not Working on College Campuses. We Need a New Approach. » Where the January guest essay insisted that D.E.I. programs are worth pursuing, the August one admitted that some « are too ideological » and « exacerbate the very problems they intend to solve. »NEW STATE DEPARTMENT DIVERSITY CHIEF BELIEVES US IS A ‘FAILED HISTORIC MODEL’ WITH A ‘COLONIZING PAST’The first piece, written by Harvard professors Dr. Caroline Elkins and Dr. Frances Frei – as well as author Anne Morriss – touted the benefits of these D.E.I. initiatives, which are employed by companies, schools, and other institutions to reward or benefit individuals based on their racial and gender identities. The essay argued, « Inclusion, as we define it, creates the conditions in which everyone can thrive and where our differences as varied, multidimensional people are not only tolerated but also valued. A willingness to pursue the benefits of D.E.I. — the full participation and fair treatment of all team members — renders organizational wholes greater than the sum of their parts. »The Harvard professors urged D.E.I. proponents not to become discouraged at the difficulties that come with pursuing these initiatives. They wrote, « At a time when some organizations, feeling the politicized ripple effects of affirmative action’s repeal, are at risk of abandoning the objectives of D.E.I., our experiences suggest that to do so is bad for individuals, organizations and American society writ large. »However, former Stanford Law School dean Paul Brest and Stanford associate professor of education and history Emily J. Levine’s guest essay on August 30th said D.E.I. is not working. They argued that better ways of dealing with diverse groups of students should be sought.FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY HAS BEEN SEIZED BY THE DEI BUREAUCRACYThey wrote « some of these programs most likely serve the important goal of ensuring that all students are valued and engaged participants in their academic communities. But we fear that many other programs are too ideological, exacerbate the very problems they intend to solve and are incompatible with higher education’s longstanding mission of cultivating critical thinking. »The authors recommended a modified approach where, instead of institutions manipulating institutional conditions based on students’ diverse identities, it would give them tips on how to deal with a politically and socially diverse world. »We propose an alternative: a pluralist-based approach to D.E.I. that would provide students with the self-confidence, mind-sets and skills to engage with challenging social and political issues. »Later on in the essay, Brest and Levine observed that diversity training on campus actually leads to more resentment among groups. They said, « Rather than correcting stereotypes, diversity training too often reinforces them and breeds resentment, impeding students’ social development. An excessive focus on identity can be just as harmful as the pretense that identity doesn’t matter. » »Overall, these programs may undermine the very groups they seek to aid by instilling a victim mind-set and by pitting students against one another, » the scholars added.

For the third year, Frances Tiafoe will be returning to the U.S. Open quarterfinals. The 26-year-old defeated Alexei Popyrin 6-4, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-3 on Sunday night to advance. With the win, Tiafoe is the first American man to reach three consecutive U.S. Open quarterfinals since Andy Roddick did so from 2006-2008.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMTiafoe lost to the eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals in 2022 and lost to fellow American Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals last year. However, Tiafoe avenged his loss to Shelton by defeating him at this year’s tournament in a thrilling five-set match. The turning point in Tiafoe’s victory on Sunday was during the second set. « I think the second set was a huge, huge win for me, » Tiafoe said. « You know, 5-3, 40-love, him serving, how good he serves, that was really, really big. To break there and then to win that set was huge. »Tiafoe rallied down 5-3 to make it 5-5 and sent the set into a tiebreak, which he eventually won. REIGNING US OPEN CHAMP COCO GAUFF ELIMINATED IN ROUND OF 16Popyrin, the no. 28 seed from Australia, was disappointed with how he played in the second set. « Definitely a lost opportunity, » Popyrin said. « I’ve been saying all week that I think against these top players you have to take your chances when you have them. Obviously, 5-3, 40-Love up serving, it’s a really big choke from my end. »The Australian was fresh off a major upset over defending champion Novak Djokovic on Friday and, for the first time in his career, made it to the fourth round of a Grand Slam. Popyrin stormed back and won the third set convincingly, but Tiafoe never wavered and clinched victory in the fourth set. With his victory, Tiafoe joined Taylor Fritz as another American to make the quarterfinal. « Everything is happening when it’s meant to happen, » Tiafoe said. « I’m glad it’s happening now because this is the most important time for me. »Should fellow American Tommy Paul upset top-ranked Jannik Sinner on Monday, he would give the U.S. three men in the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows for the second consecutive year.Tiafoe will face no. 9 ranked Grigor Dimitrov on Tuesday for a semifinal berth. Margin of error race between Harris and Trump as 2024 election enters final stretch

[ad_1]

The 2024 Election season is reaching its crescendo.Labor Day traditionally marks the final stretch ahead of a presidential election, and there are just nine weeks of campaigning left until Election Day on Nov. 5.In a slew of states, however, the election actually gets underway this month. In swing state North Carolina, mail-in voting begins on Sept. 6. Early voting begins on Sept. 16 in Pennsylvania and Sept. 26 in Michigan, two other crucial electoral battlegrounds. With the clock ticking, former President Donald Trump says he has the momentum.BIDEN TEAMS UP WITH HARRIS FOR FIRST TIME SINCE DROPPING OUT OF 2024 RACE »We’re leading in the polls now, » the former president said in an interview Friday with Fox News’ Bryan Llenas.Minutes later, at a rally in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Trump touted that « our poll numbers are starting to skyrocket. »NEW FOX NEWS POLL NUMBERS IN 4 KEY BATTLEGROUND STATESDemocratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris is urging her supporters to « not pay too much attention to the polls because we are running as the underdog. »Harris, at a rally in Savannah, Georgia, late last week, pointed to her showdown with Trump and said, « We have some hard work ahead of us. »Most of the latest national surveys show Harris with a slight single-digit edge over Trump, but the presidential election is not a national popular vote contest. It is a battle for the individual states and their electoral votes. The latest surveys in the seven battleground states that decided the 2020 election between Trump and President Biden – and will likely determine the outcome of the 2024 showdown – indicate a margin-of-error race. Among those polls are a batch from Fox News that made headlines last week.It is a big change from earlier this summer when Biden was still running.Biden’s disastrous performance against Trump in their late June debate turned up the volume of existing doubts from Americans that the 81-year-old president would have the physical and mental stamina to handle another four years in the White House. It also sparked a rising chorus of calls from top Democratic Party allies and elected officials for Biden to drop out of the race.National and battleground state polls conducted in July indicated Trump had opened up a small but significant lead over Biden. The president dropped his re-election bid on July 21 and endorsed his vice president, and Democrats immediately coalesced around Harris, who quickly enjoyed a boost in her poll numbers and in fundraising.Still, pollsters and political analysts stress that the Harris-Trump contest remains a coin-flip at this point. While the former president touts his standing in the polls, his team emphasizes they like the current poll position, as they point out that the former president has a history of outperforming public opinion surveys. »At this point in the race in 2016, Donald Trump was down to Hillary Clinton by an average of 5.9 points. At this point in the race in 2020, it was 6.9 to Joe Biden, » senior adviser Corey Lewandowski noted this weekend in an interview on « Fox News Sunday. »Meanwhile, Harris predicts that « this is going to be a tight race until the very end. » Get the latest updates from the 2024 campaign trail, exclusive interviews and more at our Fox News Digital election hub.

Biden claims Netanyahu not doing enough to secure deal with terrorists

President Biden claimed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not doing enough to secure a hostage deal with Hamas terrorists.Biden made the remarks to reporters before heading into the Situation Room, where he and Vice President Harris are convening with a hostage deal negotiating team following the murder of 23-year-old Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin and five other hostages by Hamas on Saturday. On the South Lawn of the White House, where Biden disembarked from Marine One upon returning from his vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, one reporter asked, « Mr. President, do you think it’s time for Prime Minister Netanyahu to do more on this issue? Do you think he is doing enough? »No, » the president responded flatly. FATHER OF ISRAELI-AMERICAN HOSTAGE PLEADS FOR DEAL ‘WITH SATAN’ BEFORE BIDEN, HARRIS ENTER SITUATION ROOMAsked what makes him think this deal will be successful in a way that the other proposals were not, Biden said, « Hope springs eternal. » The president said « we’re very close » to being able to present a final hostage deal. He told reporters he was headed into a national security meeting and would be going to Pittsburg later in the day. « Yes. I have spoken to the American hostage … I spoke to his mom and dad, and we are not giving up. We are going to continue to push as hard as we can. Thank you, » Biden said. Earlier Monday, Jonathan Dekel-Chen, the father of an Israeli-American hostage still being held by Hamas, pleaded for the U.S. and Israel to broker a deal « with Satan. » NETANYAHU MOURNS DEATHS OF SIX HOSTAGES RECOVERED IN GAZA, VOWS TO ‘SETTLE ACCOUNTS’ WITH HAMASDekel-Chen, appearing on « Fox & Friends, » acknowledged that the United States together with Qatar and Egypt are trying to broker an agreement between Israel and « a savage terrorist organization, » but insisted that Israeli intelligence shows Hamas’ forces are depleted at this stage. He said Netanyahu cannot offer « an excuse anymore to not complete this deal » to bring the remaining 101 hostages, including seven Americans, taken into Gaza on Oct. 7, 2023, home. Israel saw a massive labor strike on Monday after demonstrators took to the streets in droves Sunday protesting Israel’s leadership’s failure to reach an agreement to release the hostages 11 months into the war.

After ‘nightmare’ weekend, woman denies family member’s kids another free getaway at her home

[ad_1]

A woman asking others for help on social media described a « nightmare » scenario involving her brother’s children — detailing why she won’t allow the kids to stay at her place again.Over 5,500 reactions to date have come in, with over 1,500 comments posted on the personal drama as well. Describing herself as 32 years old, the woman told others on the Reddit page known as « AITA » (« Am I the a–hole ») that she lives « in a nice, cozy home that I’ve worked really hard to maintain. »COUPLE HOSTING LUXURY WEDDING AT FAMED CATHEDRAL ASKS GUESTS TO FORK OVER $333 EACHShe said her brother, who is 34, has three kids, ages 10, 8 and 6 — and that « a few months ago, he ask[ed] if they could stay at my place for the weekends because he and his wife needed a break. »The woman agreed, she said, « thinking it would be nice to bond with my nieces and nephew. »That was a mistake, apparently. The « weekend turned into a nightmare, » she wrote. « The kids went absolutely wild. They broke several things, including a [vase] that was a gift from my late grandmother, spilled juice on my white couch, and even scribbled on the walls with markers. » GRIEVING MAN REFUSES TO GIVE DECEASED WIFE’S CLOTHES TO ‘SELFISH’ SISTERThe woman said she « tried to manage the situation, but whenever I told them to stop or tried to set boundaries, they completely ignored me. »When she later reported the « damage » to her brother, she said he « just laughed it off and said, ‘Kids will be kids.’ He didn’t offer to help clean up or replace anything. »The woman described herself as « really hurt, but [I] didn’t make a big deal out of it at the time, » she shared with others. So — « fast-forward to now, [and] he’s asking if the kids can stay over again because they want to go on another weekend trip. » The woman said she « told him no, explaining what happened last time and that I don’t want to deal with that again. »WEDDING WOES AS REDDIT USER CONFRONTED BY STEPFATHER ABOUT ‘FATHER-OF-THE-BRIDE’ SLIGHTAt that, « he got really upset, saying I’m punishing his kids for being kids and that I’m being unfair. »Now, her « parents are involved, » she wrote, « saying I should ‘be the bigger person’ and help out my brother. They say the kids are sorry and just want to spend time with their aunt. But I’m still traumatized by the last time they were here. »The woman asked others if she was wrong « for refusing to let them stay at my house again. »In the top « upvoted » response on the platform, a user wrote, « This is utterly ridiculous. You are not these children’s parent, and they do not live in your home. You have no obligation to care for them except in an emergency. »The person also said, « It’s perfectly reasonable and acceptable to say that you can’t handle having them in your home, particularly given your previous experience. »The same person also suggested, « Why don’t your parents take in their grandchildren for the weekend? »GRANDPARENTS MAY HAVE SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON A MOM’S MENTAL HEALTH, STUDY FINDSOr, « if you do want to help out, you could stay at your brother’s place for the weekend, » the same user wrote. « That way, the kids are at home and can scribble on their own walls if they so choose. Also, your brother could pay you for doing this. »Another user on the platform responded to that reply, writing, « That last paragraph is a genius remedy. »For more Lifestyle articles, visit www.foxnews.com/lifestyleStill another person on the platform wrote, « Kids are kids but not destructors. Elon Musk slams New York Times writer for calling the Constitution ‘dangerous’

[ad_1]

Billionaire Elon Musk slammed a New York Times writer that wrote an article which claimed the U.S. Constitution can be considered one of the « biggest threats » to the country. The Times’ book critic Jennifer Szalai claimed that « The United States Constitution is in trouble » due to the fact that former President Trump was able to become president through the Electoral College. « Americans have long assumed that the Constitution could save us; a growing chorus now wonders whether we need to be saved from it, » Szalai said. « The document that’s supposed to be a bulwark against authoritarianism can end up fostering the widespread cynicism that helps authoritarianism grow. » She went on to attack the originalist interpretations of the Constitution, « calling it « Constitution worship. » DEM LAWMAKER CALLS OUT CNN FOR BOTCHING HEADLINE ON HAMAS KILLING HOSTAGES »Trump owes his political ascent to the Constitution, making him a beneficiary of a document that is essentially antidemocratic and, in this day and age, increasingly dysfunctional, » Szalai wrote. « After all, Trump became president in 2016 after losing the popular vote but winning the Electoral College (Article II). He appointed three justices to the Supreme Court (Article III), two of whom were confirmed by senators representing just 44 percent of the population (Article I). Those three justices helped overturn Roe v. Wade, a reversal with which most Americans disagreed. » « One of the biggest threats to America’s politics might be the country’s founding document, » the Times writer added. The piece led to criticism from Musk. « They want to overthrow The Constitution, » he said on X. « Long Live America and our Constitution! » Musk later added. KAMALA HARRIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN ‘PUSHED HARDER’ ON BIDEN’S MENTAL FITNESS DURING INTERVIEW: WAPO COLUMNISTSFox News Channel host Laura Ingraham said, « Does the NYT hate the Constitution? Of course it does. » Fox News Digital contacted the New York Times for comment and did not immediately receive a response.

Father created a drug to save his son from a rare disease, now other families are desperate to get it

[ad_1]

When his infant son was diagnosed with a rare, fatal disease, a Canadian father was dismayed to discover there was no treatment or cure. So he set out to make one himself.Terry Pirovolakis, an IT director in Toronto, Ontario, welcomed his third son in Dec. 2017. It was a « normal, healthy birth, » he told Fox News Digital — but within six months, he and his wife, Georgia Pirovolakis, noticed their baby, Michael, was not lifting his head. »He just didn’t seem like he was meeting his milestones, » Pirovolakis said.MOTHER FRANTIC TO SAVE CLINICAL TRIAL THAT COULD CURE HER DAUGHTER: ‘THE TREATMENT IS SITTING IN A FRIDGE’After months of doctors’ appointments, physiotherapy and genetic testing — what Pirovolakis describes as an « 18-month diagnostic odyssey » — a neurologist diagnosed baby Michael with spastic paraplegia 50 (SPG50), a neurological disorder that affects fewer than 100 people in the world. »They told us to just go home and love him — and said he would be paralyzed from the waist down by age 10, and quadriplegic by age 20, » Pirovolakis said. »They said he’d never walk or talk, and would need support for the rest of his life. »Spastic paraplegia 50 (SPG50) is a neurological disorder that affects a child’s development, gradually leading to cognitive impairment, muscle weakness, speech impairment and paralysis, according to the National Organization for Rare Disorders. Most people with the disease will die by the time they reach their 20s. »Children with SPG50 may experience early developmental delays, muscle weakness and spasticity, but they continue to strive and adapt, » Dr. Eve Elizabeth Penney, an epidemiologist at the Texas Department of State Health Services and medical contributor for Drugwatch, told Fox News Digital. WHAT IS ANGELMAN SYNDROME? COLIN FARRELL’S SON IS LIVING WITH THIS RARE DISEASE »Over time, these symptoms can worsen, making it hard for affected individuals to walk and perform daily activities, » added Penney, who was not involved in Michael Pirovolakis’ care. »The prognosis varies from person to person, but it’s generally a progressive condition, meaning symptoms can become more severe over time, » she also said. In the absence of a cure, most families can only manage symptoms through physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and medications to help control spasticity or seizures, Penney said. « Managing SPG50 requires a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to address its various symptoms and challenges, » she added. There is no treatment currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for SPG50.After the shock of the diagnosis, Pirovolakis immediately started researching, with a focus on finding a gene therapy that could help his son.A month after his baby’s diagnosis, Pirovolakis flew to Washington, D.C., for a gene therapy conference, where he met with several experts. He also visited Sheffield, England, and the National Institutes of Health at the University of Cambridge, where scientists had been studying the disease. « We then liquidated our life savings, refinanced our home and paid a team at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center to create a proof of concept to start Michael’s gene therapy, » Pirovolakis said. After successful tests showed the gene therapy was effective at stopping the disease’s progression in mice and in human cells, Pirovolakis worked with a small drug company in Spain to manufacture the drug.On Dec. 30, 2021, Health Canada granted approval to move forward with the gene therapy for Michael Pirovolakis. STIFF PERSON SYNDROME PATIENTS SHARE WHAT IT’S LIKE TO LIVE WITH THE RARE DISEASE »On March 24, 2022, my son was the first person to ever get treated with gene therapy at SickKids in Toronto, » Pirovolakis said. The procedure, which involves injecting cerebral spinal fluid through a lumbar puncture, does come with risks — but the potential benefits are life-saving.After Michael Pirovolakis received the one-time treatment, there were three more doses left. »We decided that we had to help other kids, » Pirovolakis said. »When I heard that no one was going to do anything about it, I had to — I couldn’t let them die. »Pirovolakis opened up a Phase 2 study in the U.S., which treated three children two years ago. One of those was 6-month-old Jack Lockard, the youngest child to ever receive the treatment. »Jack has thrived since then, » Rebekah Lockard, the boy’s mother, told Fox News Digital.THE GIRL WHO CAN’T SMILE: HOW A RARE DISORDER BECAME A YOUNG WOMAN’S ‘GREATEST GIFT’ »He is sitting independently, banging toys together, drinking from a straw cup and working really hard on crawling. »She added, « Doctors and therapists share the same sentiment: The treatment works! »Other children who participated in the trial have experienced similar results, Lockard said. »They’ve all shown that their disease has stopped progressing and their cognition has improved. »There are more children who still need the treatment — including Lockard’s first child, 3-year-old Naomi, who also has SPG50 — but are unable to access it because the clinical trial has now run out of money, as Fox News Digital previously reported. It costs about $1 million to make the drug for each child, Pirovolakis said, and another $300,000 or so to treat the patient in the U.S. at the hospital. Pirovolakis has approached pharmaceutical companies, but all of them have declined to manufacture the drug. »No investor is going to give you money to treat a disease that is not going to make money, » he said. « That’s the dilemma we’re in. »While Pirovolakis and his team are actively working to secure grants and investors, it’s largely up to the parents to raise funds for the next phase of the clinical trial. So far, Lockard has raised more than $90,000 via GoFundMe (called « Naomi and Jack Battle SPG50 ») to get her daughter’s treatment, but that is only a fraction of what is needed.Penney noted that treatment for SPG50 is challenging and expensive to develop — « mainly because it’s a sporadic disease. »The doctor told Fox News Digital, « Pharmaceutical companies often prioritize conditions that affect larger populations, with a more significant potential for recouping research and development costs. »CHILDREN WITH TOTAL DEAFNESS REGAIN HEARING AFTER ‘GROUNDBREAKING’ GENE THERAPY: ‘LIKE A MIRACLE’ »The market is much smaller for rare diseases like SPG50, making it financially less viable for companies to invest in creating a treatment. »To devote himself to the cause, Pirovolakis quit his job and started a nonprofit in California, which now has five employees and 20 consultants. The company — called Elpida Therapeutics, after the Greek word for « hope » — will run a Phase 3 study for SPG50 at the NIH in November.Without the backing of major drug companies, however, there isn’t funding available to get the therapies to the children who need them. Eight doses of the drug for SPG50 were produced in Spain and have been flown to the U.S. »The treatment is here, just literally sitting in a refrigerator, ready to go, » Lockard said. « Doctors are ready. There just isn’t enough money to make it happen. »For more Health articles, visit www.foxnews.com/healthThere are currently four families in the U.S. who are trying to raise the money that’s needed, according to Pirovolakis. »Time is of the essence, » he said. « We want to make sure the trial moves on and these kids get treated. »Looking ahead to the Phase 3 clinical trial at the NIH, Pirovolakis’ goal is to treat eight children with SPG50. »If we can show that it works in all eight children — and we can prove to the FDA that it is making a difference — then the drug will get approved and every child can get it, » he said.Ideally, after the drug is approved — which could take three to five years, Pirovolakis estimates — SPG50 will be added to hospitals’ newborn screening programs and every child with the disease will be able to get the therapy.Elpida Therapeutics has partnered with the Columbus Children’s Foundation (Fundación Columbus in Spain) and CureSPG50 to help save children with the disease. »Our partnership with Elpida is driven by an unwavering commitment to leaving no child behind, » Sheila Mikhail, co-founder of the CCF, said in a statement to Fox News Digital. »At the Columbus Children’s Foundation and Fundacion Columbus, as a global organization, we believe that every child deserves a chance for a healthy future. Together, we’re making groundbreaking strides in treating ultra-rare genetic disorders, ensuring that no child is left to face these challenges alone. »Pirovolakis said he gets several calls each week from families around the world, asking for help saving their children. »Unfortunately, the biggest challenge in providing treatment for children with rare diseases often comes down to a lack of funding and vision, » he told Fox News Digital. « The technology to cure our children is already here. I hope that someone with immense wealth — and more importantly, the vision and influence — will step in, » he said. « Their support could not only impact a handful of diseases and children, but extend hope to thousands of rare diseases and millions of children, both this generation and the next. »CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTERCurrently, 40 million Americans are living with a rare disease, and one in 10 will be afflicted by a potentially treatable rare condition.Pirovolakis added, « Someone you know or love will likely be affected by a rare disease. »

Minnesota Walz-appointed board requires teachers to ‘affirm’ their students’ gender identities

[ad_1]

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota has personally appointed members to the state’s teachers board, a body that will require educators to « affirm » their students’ gender identities, have « racial consciousness, » and learn to « disrupt oppressive systems, » public notices show. The Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) updated its Standards of Effective Practice with new guidelines for aspiring state teachers that are set to take effect throughout the state in 2025. Walz, the Democratic vice presidential candidate, was behind the appointment of all 13 PELSB members during his tenure as governor. The new standards will require teachers in Minnesota to take controversial stances in their approach to teaching, such as « affirming » their student’s « gender, » « gender identity » and « sexual orientation. »In order to become a licensed educator, the new standards also require that a teacher « understands multiple theories of identity formation » and takes « culturally affirming, and proactive approaches to behavior. »KAMALA HARRIS AND TIM WALZ, ENDORSED BY TEACHERS UNIONS, RECEIVE FAILING GRADE FROM SCHOOL CHOICE GROUPThe eighth section of the new standards, titled, « Racial Consciousness and Reflection, » requires that a teacher « understands how ethnocentrism, eurocentrism, deficit-based teaching, and white supremacy undermine pedagogical equity. »The practice also requires a teacher to assess « how their biases, perceptions and academic training may affect their teaching practice and perpetuate oppressive systems and utilizes tools to mitigate their own behavior to disrupt oppressive systems. »Catrin Wigfall, education policy fellow at the American Experiment, a North Dakota conservative think tank, says that « there is concern that these changes will exacerbate the teacher shortage, discouraging aspiring educators from entering the profession out of fear they will be forced to incorporate ideological perspectives just to be able to do the job they love. »‘HE IGNORED US’: LOCAL MINNESOTA SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT SLAMS WALZ’S ‘NEGATIVE IMPACT’ ON K-12 EDUCATION »Gov. Tim Walz’s Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) plowed forward with making controversial changes to state teacher licensure requirements despite overwhelming pushback and criticism from the public. The changes will require aspiring educators to infuse ideologically-driven content into their licensure coursework (regardless of where they plan to teach), and the expectation is that this will then be implemented in their classrooms, » Wigfall told Fox News Digital. »The changes also make concerning and insulting generalizations about our teachers — that they are to consider themselves as biased with intersecting oppressive identities and that they need to be trained on how to treat others of different demographics with respect and dignity, celebrate student diversity, etc, » Wigfall, a former public school teacher, told Fox.Under the Walz-appointed board’s new rules, students will be taught about « power, privilege, intersectionality, and systemic oppression in the context of the various communities. »Those affected by the standards are « all teacher candidates completing an initial teacher licensure program in Minnesota and all teachers seeking an initial Tier 3 license via the licensure via portfolio process. »Schools across the state are preparing to adopt these policies as Walz runs on the Democratic presidential ticket with Vice President Kamala Harris.

LSU’s first touchdown of the season was immediately given a bit of a damper. With 7:09 in the second quarter, Tigers quarterback Garrett Nussmeier found Kyren Lacy on the near-side corner for a 19-yard touchdown with the PAT tying the game at 7.Lacy’s momentum took him into the tunnel, but it was what he did after coming out of it that forced referees to throw laundry on the field.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMAfter celebrating with his teammates, Lacy appeared to pretend to shoot a gun at the USC defense.Lacy was hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, forcing LSU to kick off from their own 20 instead of the usual 35. Rece Davis and Kirk Herbstreit were both in agreement that it was a « good call. »Herbstreit said he understood the « emotion » of college players but drew the line « when you do something like that. »Lacy did the celebration on the bench as well.JAMES MADISON QUARTERBACK HAS EARLY CANDIDATE FOR FLOP OF THE YEAR; TEAMMATE PRETENDS TO GIVE CPRUSC’s Zachariah Branch then returned the kick 46 yards past midfield as the Trojans quickly got into scoring range, although they ultimately settled for a field goal.Lacy, a senior, began his college career at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2020 before transferring to LSU ahead of the 2022 season. He started in 10 of the Tigers’ 13 games last year along with now-NFL receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr., who were both first-round picks.Last season, he had 30 receptions for 558 yards and seven touchdowns. This year, he figures to take on a larger role, given the departures of Nabers and Thomas. The game was tied at 10 at halftime at the time of publication.Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Trudeau called out by steelworker who refuses to shake his hand during blunt exchange: ‘Don’t believe you’

[ad_1]

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau got an earful during a photo op from a cash-strapped steelworker who told the leader his policies have left his family scratching to make ends meet.Footage of the tense exchange in Sault Ste. Marie, a city in Ontario, which was obtained by CTV News, went viral. The unidentified worker spurned Trudeau’s offer of doughnuts to complain about high taxes, medical bills and giveaways to people he deemed « lazy. » »The 25% tariffs we just brought in is going to help you out … that’s going to keep your job, » Trudeau told the man. »What about the 40% taxes I am paying? And I don’t have a doctor, » the employee of Algoma Steel shot back.CANADA MOVES TO LIMIT IMMIGRATION AMID STRAINED RELATIONS WITH USTrudeau responded by saying that a multimillion-dollar investment from the Canadian government meant the man would have a job « for many years to come. » The man responded by saying that he expected Trudeau to be voted out. »That’s what elections are for, » said the Liberal Party leader, who stayed calm and collected during the exchange. « I look forward to everyone exercising the right to vote. … We are going to invest in you and your job. » »I don’t believe you for a second, » the steelworker shot back. The man also mentioned that he felt unemployed Canadians got better access to affordable health care than he did after Trudeau referenced an initiative to help hundreds of thousands of Canadians get dental care.CANADA’S TRUDEAU TO REMAIN IN OFFICE DESPITE LOSS OF KEY SEAT IN SPECIAL ELECTION « Probably like my neighbor who doesn’t go to work because she’s lazy? » the steelworker asked. »You know what? Most Canadians try to stick up for each other, and that’s what we’ve got to keep doing, » Trudeau responded before wishing the man good luck. At the end, the laborer appeared to refuse a handshake from Trudeau. The next federal election in Canada is set to take place on Oct. 20, 2025. Trudeau’s government has been scrutinized amid a cost-of-living crisis affecting the country, though Trudeau has remained optimistic. »Inflation came down last month, beating out expectations, » the prime minister wrote in a Facebook post on July 17. « But, until Canadians can feel that relief in their wallets, at the grocery store, and on their mortgages, the job’s not done. »CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPFox News Digital reached out to Trudeau’s office for comment.

Tim Walz condemns Hamas after being roasted for appearing to miss question about murdered hostages in Gaza

[ad_1]

During a visit to the Minnesota State Fair on Sunday, Democrat vice presidential nominee Tim Walz appeared to miss a question about six hostages found dead in Gaza. The clip, making the rounds online, shows the Minnesota governor greeting supporters and answering a few questions. Someone off camera can be heard asking Walz, « What’s your reaction to the six hostages being found dead in Gaza? » Without answering, Walz tells the group of people, « All right, thanks everybody, » and walks away. DEM LAWMAKER CALLS OUT CNN FOR BOTCHING HEADLINE ON HAMAS KILLING HOSTAGESThe angle made it seem like Walz was deliberately avoiding answering, but it’s not clear from the footage whether he had heard the question. The clip was still enough to set X users alight, with some accusing him of being a « coward » for failing to answer. Fox News Digital reached out to the Harris-Walz campaign to inquire whether the governor had heard the question and, if not, what his response would have been. Later Sunday, Walz issued a statement condemning Hamas as a « brutal terrorist organization. » « The anguish of losing a child is something no family should have to endure. Gwen and I send our deepest condolences to the Goldberg-Polin family, after Hamas’ murder of their son Hersh, » reads a post on Walz’s X account. « Hamas is a brutal terrorist organization – and we condemn their continued atrocities against both Americans and Israelis in the strongest possible terms. » Walz’s appearance at the Minnesota State Fair came after Israel Defense Forces found six Israeli hostages dead during a rescue operation in the tunnels below Gaza’s Rafah.Among the bodies recovered was Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who had been held by Hamas terrorists since Oct. 7, when war broke out between Israel and Hamas.Fox News Digital’s Emma Colton contributed to this report.

43 days: Kamala Harris has yet to do formal press conference since emerging as Democratic nominee

[ad_1]

Vice President Kamala Harris’ interview drought finally ended Thursday, but after 43 days as the presumptive and now official Democratic nominee for president, she has yet to hold an official press conference.Under pressure to sit down for a substantive interview after weeks of stonewalling, she agreed to a sit-down with CNN’s Dana Bash on Thursday in Georgia, joined by running mate Tim Walz.Harris defended some of her noted policy flip-flops on issues like fracking and immigration, saying her « values » hadn’t changed. She was also pressed on whether she had regrets about defending President Biden’s mental acuity after his debate, given he dropped out of the race less than a month later. She also said she wanted to « turn the page on the last decade of what I believe has been contrary to where the spirit of our country really lies. »Bash pointed out Harris had been vice president for three-and-a-half of those years, but Harris countered she meant moving on from this « era, » seemingly referring to the political rise of Donald Trump that began in 2015.HARRIS CLAIMS SHE ‘MADE CLEAR’ HER POSITION ON FRACKING IN 2020 – TRANSCRIPT SHOWS ANOTHER STORYFollowing Harris’ first sit-down interview, NBC News Washington correspondent Yamiche Alcindor, who is known for her glowing Biden-Harris coverage, appeared unimpressed. « Harris keeps saying ‘my values haven’t changed’ while not explaining why her positions have changed, » Alcindor wrote. As to when she’ll actually do a formal press conference, that day may never come. Sunday marks exactly six weeks since Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed Harris; no other Democrat challenged her and she quickly wrapped up the nomination from there. »You will not see one press conference from her in the next 75 days until Election Day, » Fox News contributor Joe Concha predicted earlier this month.NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck feels the vice president « obviously owes it to the American people to hold free-wheeling press conferences where reporters can, unlike what happened [Thursday] with CNN’s Dana Bash, ask follow-up questions. » »For every softball from, say, ABC or NPR, you’ll hope a liberal journalist will show some courage to do the right thing, » Houck told Fox News Digital. « The interview itself had a positive atmosphere. From the get-go in the hype video-like opening by Bash, CNN put forward a perception that this was an event, not a grinding fact-finding mission, » Houck continued. « She missed a litany of topics with Harris. Allowing death row inmates to vote, closing ICE, defunding the police, ending private insurance, girl’s sports, the filibuster, Jussie Smollett, the Minneapolis bail fund, systemic racism… those were just a few of the areas she could have touched on. »Former President Trump has sought to highlight the contrast in media availability between the two, sitting for several lengthy interviews in recent weeks and also holding a pair of press conferences.Harris received mixed reviews for her showing on Thursday with Bash, where she took the majority of the questions but nevertheless had Walz there for support. One point that received praise from liberals was her pointed dismissal of a question about Trump’s suggestion that she didn’t embrace being Black until adulthood. Calling attacks around race from Trump a tired « playbook, » she told Bash to move on to the next question. But conservative CNN commentator Scott Jennings said the Trump campaign should be « salivating » over one of the revelations from the interview, which appeared to be her embrace of so-called « Bidenomics. » »She is making it clear that she will embrace and be a continuation of Biden’s economic policy — his record — what they’ve done, » he said. « She offered no remorse, no regrets, no introspection about anything they’ve done. »HUCKABEE SANDERS BLASTS HARRIS FOR DOING JOINT INTERVIEW WITH WALZ: CAN’T DO IT ‘BY HERSELF’By doing the interview, Harris met the bar she set three weeks ago that she wanted to schedule one by the end of the month. Whether pressure will grow for her to do more, and also her first solo interview as a candidate, remains to be seen. »My fear is, because Bash wasn’t like, say, CBS’s Steve Kroft or NPR’s Steve Inskeep salivating at the sight of Barack Obama, the liberal media will claim this and the upcoming ABC debate are sufficient interview time for the campaign, » Houck said.Fox News Digital’s Paul Steinhauser contributed to this report.

No. 23 USC scores touchdown in final seconds to take down No. 13 LSU

[ad_1]

It was the beginning of new eras for both USC and LSU, but only one of them got off to an ideal start.Miller Moss, only replacing No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams, had ice in his veins, driving down the field late to help the 23rd-ranked Trojans get a 27-20 victory over No. 13 LSU in Las Vegas on Sunday night. With the game tied at 20 with 1:47 left and a timeout, it was all USC needed. Moss completed his first five passes on the drive, and with 18 seconds left, Kyron Hudson made his second one-handed catch of the night to put the Trojans in field goal range. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMAfter the reception, LSU’s Jardin Gilbert was called for targeting, putting the Trojans at the LSU 13. Woody Marks then ran it in for his second score of the night, giving USC a 27-20 lead over LSU with eight seconds left. Garrett Nussmeier’s first pass for a miracle drive was picked off, all but giving USC the victory. The aforementioned Hudson had what might already be the catch of the year earlier in the game back in the second quarter, and the Trojans found the end zone two plays later with a Marks score to go up, 7-0.LSU PLAYER CALLED FOR UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT AFTER APPEARING TO PRETEND TO SHOOT GUN AFTER TOUCHDOWNHowever, LSU scored on a Kyren Lacy touchdown on the ensuing drive. After the score, though, he appeared to pretend to shoot a gun, resulting in a 15-yard penalty on the kickoff. USC took advantage, but ultimately had to settle for a field goal. LSU matched it, and USC missed a field goal just before the half ended to head into the locker room tied at 10.Both teams exchanged punts to begin the second half, but USC found the middle of the uprights midway through the third. LSU, though, responded with a seven-play, 73-yard touchdown drive that ended in Nussmeier’s second touchdown, this time to Aaron Anderson.Midway through the fourth, USC found themselves at LSU’s 36-yard line and opted to go for it on 4th and 9, but Moss’ pass fell incomplete. But after forcing a three-and-out, the Trojans needed just three plays to take the lead, as Moss found Ja’Kobi Lane for an impressive, over-the-shoulder, touchdown grab to put USC up, 20-17, with 5:44 to go. LSU, though, kicked a game-tying field goal on their next drive. But, it clearly was not enough.Moss completed 27 of his 36 passes for a career-high 378 yards, while Marks ran for 68 yards on his 16 carries, two of which resulted in touchdowns. In replacing reigning Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels, who went right after Williams in the NFL Draft, Nussmeier impressed by going 29-for-38 for 304 yards through the air – Lacy led all receivers with seven receptions for 94 yards.USC figures to climb up a decent amount in the rankings, and they will head home on Saturday to host Utah State. It will be interesting to see where LSU winds up, though, as they host Nicholls next weekend.Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
