‘Reagan’ movie beats box office expectations on opening weekend

[ad_1]

« Reagan, » the first full-length feature chronicling the life of former President Ronald Reagan, outperformed box office expectations in its opening weekend.Starring Dennis Quaid as the 40th U.S. president, « Reagan » closed out the September 30-August 2 Labor Day weekend with an estimated $10 million, according to Box Office Mojo. The film took the third spot behind « Deadpool & Wolverine » and « Alien: Romulus. »The biographical drama « almost doubled projections that it would make about $5 million in its opening weekend, » the Oklahoman reported on Monday morning when the film was projected to earn $9.2 million. »Reagan » was well-received by audiences giving it a 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes as of Tuesday. However, critics, especially from left-wing outlets, largely panned the film.NEW ‘REAGAN’ MOVIE SHOWS PRESIDENT’S STRENGTHS AND WHY HE IS THE MOST REMEMBERED FOR FIGHTING ‘EVIL’Far-left site The Daily Beast called « Reagan » « the worst movie of the year. » »You may have suspected that this MAGA-tinged hagiography would be absolute trash, but it turns out you didn’t think low enough, » entertainment critic Nick Schager wrote in the Daily Beast. Brutal reviews were also published in The Washington Post, Variety, The Wrap and The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the film’s opening weekend. »The faithful for whom ‘Reagan’ was made aren’t likely to see that it’s a hagiography as rosy and shallow as anything in a Kremlin May Day parade. As pop-culture propaganda — popaganda, if you will — the movie’s strictly for true believers. As history, it’s worthless, » Washington Post’s Ty Burr wrote. In The Wrap, critic William Bibbiani also called Reagan an « embarrassing presidential biopic [that] treats Dennis Quaid’s POTUS as the second coming. »DENNIS QUAID THRILLS LOCALS IN DIXON, ILL., FOR ‘REAGAN’ PREMIERE, SAYS HOLLYWOOD ‘FORGOT’ ABOUT SMALL TOWNSAhead of « Reagan »‘s release, Quaid brushed off concerns that portraying the Republican president would get him « canceled. » »It’s a biopic. It’s a love story. It’s about all of us as America, where we used to be, » Quaid told Fox News Digital in August. « A lot of that gets twisted because people have agendas. And so, yeah, they tried to cancel me a couple of times, but so what? »Reagan may have been a divisive figure to some on the left, Quaid said, but the film about his life is not « political. » »When Reagan was president as well, you know, they called him a warmonger. But this is the guy who ended the Cold War, by the way, and made peace with the Soviets. But it took a cold warrior like that. … And they called him a third-rate actor, this and that, » Quaid said. »Reagan was like everybody’s dad at the time that he was president, » he continued. « And, like all families, that’s either you admire your dad or you’re rebelling against your dad. And there’s a lot of those feelings still hold on. That’s what we were going through with politics or whatever in this country today, a lot of people wanting to kind of relate that to Reagan and make this a political movie, which it’s not. » »Reagan » was directed by Sean McNamara, produced by Mark Joseph and also stars Penelope Ann Miller and Jon Voight.

LAURA INGRAHAM: This strategy could cost Democrats ‘dearly’ in November

[ad_1]

Fox News host Laura Ingraham predicts the « hide the candidate routine » Democrats are playing with Vice President Kamala Harris will cost them at the polls in November on « The Ingraham Angle. » LAURA INGRAHAM: As « The Angle » predicted, the state of the race shows us that Kamala Harris’ post-DNC bump amounted to kind of a dead cat bounce — in other words, nothing. In fact, if anything, Donald Trump is now the candidate who has the momentum edge. Nate Silver, the polling analyst/guru, has done an extensive analysis, and as of today, he has Trump with a 56.7% chance of winning the presidency versus Harris with a 43% chance.…Of course, on the key issues — the economy, inflation, immigration — President Trump has a clear advantage. Of course, the Democrats have the media, and, of course, they have a lot of money.  44 DAYS: KAMALA HARRIS HAS YET TO DO FORMAL PRESS CONFERENCE SINCE EMERGING AS DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE There are still drop boxes you’re going to worry about and last-minute court cases. We’ll get into that, but they don’t have a candidate who can actually do the job.  We know the chaos that such a situation created with Biden. So, for pulling this « hide the candidate » routine, again, it should cost Democrats dearly in November.

On Capitol Hill, it’s ‘back to school’ all over again

[ad_1]

It’s back to school time on Capitol Hill. But not really until next week. What?Even though millions of kids returned to school just after Labor Day, the end of August, or, in some cases, even earlier in August, Congress still isn’t in session yet for the fall term.REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK: WHAT THE END OF THE YEAR LOOKS LIKE IN CONGRESSThat comes on Monday, September 9. That’s when the House and Senate come back for legislative action for the first time in more than a month. The Senate last voted on August 1. The House was supposed to be in session until then as well. But the House shaved an entire week off its schedule in July, abandoning Washington a week earlier. But things around the Capitol are starting to return to normal. And yours truly – along with some members of the Congressional press corps – began filtering back into the Capitol this week.My mother taught second grade for decades in Ohio. And she would usually return to school for a few days in late August for meetings and to prepare her room for the new school year. So, some Congressional aides, the administrative staff and some reporters came back to the Capitol this week to « prepare their rooms » for the new school year. But the analogies of Congress returning to session just like students filing back into the classroom is imperfect. This isn’t the start of a new Congress. People don’t have new teachers and new lockers. There aren’t new kids from other schools. The promise and energy of opportunity associated with a new year doesn’t permeate the air. Everything is pretty much the same as it was on Capitol Hill in September as it was in July. The « true » start of the « school year » comes at noon on January 3, 2025 when they swear-in the 119th Congress. That’s when new people appear. There are new chairmen and chairwomen of committees. Some lawmakers get new offices. The Capitol usually throbs with optimism.BORDER SENATOR AND FORMER HARRIS VP SHORT-LISTER CLAIMS ‘NO EVIDENCE’ ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS VOTEThe only thing students and Members of Congress have in common at this time of year is the desire to get out of school. That universal yearning is common year round among students and lawmakers. Everyone wants to get out. Be free. Be on recess.Perhaps it’s only appropriate that they call a Congressional break « recess. » However, some optics-conscious lawmakers frequently refer to such respites as the more dignified and anodyne « district work period. »Can you imagine students referring to anything after 7th period as « the homework period? » The « Algebra II Augmentation? » How about the « Earth Science Addendum? »Pray tell, what would college students call spring break in Panama City? « Sprint Semester By the Sea. » Perhaps « A Guide To Local Open Container Laws. » Maybe « A Survey of Legal Systems in the Caribbean. »But back to Congress. It’s an election year. And lawmakers utterly can’t wait to get out of here – even though they haven’t really been here all summer.THE HOME STRETCH: VP HARRIS FILLS DEMOCRATS WITH OPTIMISM AS ELECTION DAY NEARSThe legislative traffic in Congress was light all year. The assassination attempt of former President Trump and the backroom struggle among Democrats to convince President Biden to step aside consumed the bulk of everyone’s attention this summer. The last major bills Congress tackled came in April. Congress finally approved a set of bills to fund the government – which were due last October. And Congress greenlighted assistance to Israel and Ukraine. Other than that, Congress didn’t have a lot to do other than to get through the conventions. Now it’s on to the election where both the House and Senate are divided by a razor’s edge. The same with the Presidential election. So there’s not a lot to do on Capitol Hill. And lawmakers who are retiring or lost their primaries are more than happy to skip out of Washington early. So this is hardly « back to school. » In Congressional terms, the fall is often reminiscent of what students encounter in the spring. It’s getting hot out. The mind wanders. Teachers struggle to keep everyone focused. Everyone is looking forward to summer break. It’s a little like the seasons are reversed in Congress. The House is slated to meet next week for four days. Then four days the week of September 15. And finally, five days the week of August 22. That’s it until Tuesday, November 12. But there is even chatter that the House could (I’ll underscore could) give back the final week of September – if Congress has funded the government and there’s no chance of a shutdown on October 1. That’s when the government’s new fiscal year begins.Yes, like school, Congress must complete its work before recess. But sometimes Congress doesn’t meet the deadline and needs a remedial course. « Summer school. » Only that’s « fall and winter school » in the eyes of Congress. Or even « spring school. » Remember, it took Congress until this past April to fully fund the government last time. They burned through three seasons alone right there. It’s not quite clear what the principal would have done with students as delinquent as this Congress finishing its work. But like students, Congress has similar motivations. Anything to get home. Go to the beach. Take a break. Or, in this case, campaign.REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK: WHAT A ‘YACHT ROCK’ SUMMER LOOKS LIKE ON CAPITOL HILLHouse Republicans are struggling with fundraising. Democrats are on the charge after the switch out with Vice President Harris. Both parties know the House will hinge on a handful of seats. And it’s likely that whichever party captures the White House will dictate the party in control of the House in 2025.So both sides have equal motivation. It’s similar in the Senate – although it’s a tougher challenge for the Democrats to maintain their narrow 51-49 majority. West Virginia is likely gone after the retirement of Sen. Joe Manchin, I-W.V., who caucuses with the Democrats. And Democrats must hold swing seats in red states like Ohio and Montana. That’s to say nothing of maintaining seats in battleground states like Nevada, Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. So school is back for now. And it doesn’t even matter if Congress hits the books between now and the end of the term. A big test is coming up. The voters will deliver quite the education to lawmakers on election day.

GOP leaders vow ‘action’ as Columbia University swarmed by anti-Israel agitators

[ad_1]

House Republican leaders are vowing to push back on anti-Israel protests that are once again taking over college campuses as students return for the fall semester. It comes as activists have already begun defacing property and staging demonstrations at Columbia University in New York City, which was a hotbed of controversial activity in the spring. »There should be a zero tolerance policy for antisemitic violence on campus that targets Jewish students. If universities won’t hold protestors accountable, Congress will, » Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., told Fox News Digital. « Just last month, we subpoenaed several Columbia University officials, and we will continue our investigations and take action on the floor as students return to campus. »HAMAS TERRORISTS RELEASE FOOTAGE OF SIX SLAIN HOSTAGES, PROMISE TO SHARE ‘LAST MESSAGES’ GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., similarly said, « Columbia University has repeatedly enabled radical pro-Hamas mobs, putting Jewish members of their community at risk and allowing antisemitic hate to take root at a once acclaimed institution. House Republicans will use every tool at our disposal to demand immediate action from Columbia University on behalf of the Jewish students who want to pursue their education without fear. »House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., told Fox News Digital, « It’s no wonder the pro-terrorist mob is back at Columbia — the Democrats have enabled and empowered the antisemites in their party. »Emmer said House Republicans would « continue to send a resounding message » of support for Israel and for Jewish students in the U.S.BIDEN CLAIMS NETANYAHU NOT DOING ENOUGH TO SECURE DEAL WITH TERRORISTS Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., meanwhile, urged the White House to speak out against the protests as well. »It is the first day of class at Columbia University and the pro-Terrorist, antisemitic mob is already back, » Johnson wrote on X. « The Biden-Harris Administration should condemn this mob immediately. »Fox News Digital reached out to the White House for a response. At least one protester was arrested during the Manhattan demonstrations on Tuesday, video shows. Footage also shows activists pushing barricades, and a second person was taken into custody outside of Columbia’s sister school, Barnard College.ANTISEMITIC RIOT AT COLUMBIA REACHES BOILING POINT AS AGITATORS TAKE OVER ACADEMIC BUILDING, BARRICADE DOORSRepublicans have seized on Israel as a unifying issue for their own party as the left continues to fracture over U.S. relations with its close Middle Eastern ally.Moderate Democrats, however, have pointed to the primary losses of anti-Israel progressives as proof that the left is capable of policing its own anti-Semitism problem.

Border senator and former Harris VP short-lister claims ‘no evidence’ illegal immigrants vote

[ad_1]

Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., denied there was any evidence of illegal immigrants voting in U.S. elections on Tuesday when he was asked about legislation that would require proof of citizenship in order to vote. « There is no evidence that undocumented migrants vote, » the border senator told Fox News’ Chad Pergram at the Capitol during the chamber’s pro forma session. Kelly had been asked for his thoughts on including a bill to require proof of citizenship in order to vote in a must-pass spending bill at the end of the month. MCCORMICK SEIZES ON PENNSYLVANIA SENATE RACE GAP, LAYING BORDER BLAME ON CASEY »This is a solution looking for a problem, » he responded.Kelly reiterated again, « The problem doesn’t exist. » Republicans have ramped up their efforts to secure elections ahead of the pivotal November races, in part by removing noncitizens from voter rolls across the country. Last month, 138 noncitizens were found to have recently voted in Ohio during a months-long voter roll audit. This came after Ohio removed hundreds of registered noncitizens from voter rolls earlier this year. It’s unclear, however, whether the noncitizens who have illegally voted were in the U.S. illegally.BLUE-STATE REPUBLICAN TOUTS HIS ANTI-TRUMP CREDENTIALS IN BID TO FLIP SENATE SEAT REDDespite Kelly’s claim, similar instances of registered noncitizens have been found across the country. In Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, revealed that more than 6,500 noncitizens were registered in the Lone Star State. « Of the over 6,500 potential noncitizens removed from the voter rolls, approximately 1,930 have a voter history, » read an August press release. Alabama, Virginia and Georgia also announced numerous instances of noncitizens being registered to vote during their own audits. MICHIGAN BECOMES TOP GOP SENATE TARGET AS MIKE ROGERS TIES WITH DEM OPPONENT AMONG OLDER VOTERSAhead of the 2024 election, some conservative Republicans in the House and Senate have made it their mission to include the federal legislation to require proof of citizenship to vote in a must-pass stopgap spending bill at the end of September. The bill, known as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, passed the Republican-led House earlier this summer by a vote of 221-198. Five Democrats joined the measure, including Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas; Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-Texas; Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine; Rep. Don Davis, D-N.C.; and Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Wash.GOP SENATORS LOOK TO TIE CRACKDOWN ON NONCITIZEN VOTING TO MUST-PASS SPENDING BILLHowever, the bill has not been scheduled for a vote on the Senate floor by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.Some proponents have suggested tying it to the spending bill is the only way to secure a Senate vote on the measure. According to Kelly, it is « hard enough to get citizens to vote. » He said the legislation would create a « new system and requirements that there doesn’t seem to be any necessity [for]. »Get the latest updates from the 2024 campaign trail, exclusive interviews and more at our Fox News Digital election hub.

Beware of this Social Security scam by crooks trying to trick you

[ad_1]

If there is something you can count on, it is that there seems to be a new scam every day. While we’ve covered different types of Social Security scams over the years, Jeanne from Hackensack, New Jersey, forwarded a new one to share with you. »I received this email (displayed below) yesterday. I did not open the attachment. I hovered my mouse over the name of the Sender and immediately saw it as a lie. »This vigilant approach by Jeanne demonstrates the importance of being cautious and skeptical when dealing with unsolicited emails, especially those claiming to be from official sources.GET SECURITY ALERTS, EXPERT TIPS – SIGN UP FOR KURT’S NEWSLETTER – THE CYBERGUY REPORT HEREA phishing scam is when a person or group pretends to be an established organization, such as a governmental agency, financial institution or legitimate company. The scammer uses what looks like a legitimate email address and usually attaches what looks like an official invoice or letter. They usually approach with a sense of urgency. In this instance, her Social Security number was compromised. The desired outcome is to get you to open the attachment, which can download a virus or malware onto your device or reach out to them to get your personal information, in this case, over the phone. Luckily, Jeanne knew better, did not open the attachment and reported it to the governmental agency being impersonated.HOW TO RECOGNIZE AND AVOID BEING A VICTIM OF VACATION RENTAL SCAMSNow that you know what types of emails to be wary of, what should you do when you receive them? Below are several methods to protect yourself.Mark the email as junk or spam so your email service provider will learn to flag such emails. This should also make it harder to open the attachments accidentally.Jeanne smartly did not open the attached letter. She hovered her cursor over the attachment and saw it was suspicious. Remember, opening attachments or links from a scammer can download viruses or malware to your device. It can also take you to another website that can glean more of your personal information or release viruses or malware. This will simply validate that they have an actual victim to harass further. Additionally, if you do call them with the number they provided, they can connect your email address to the phone number you use to call them. If there is a problem with a person’s Social Security number or record, Social Security will typically mail a letter. This proactive approach helps safeguard your personal information and alerts you to any unauthorized activity.Always enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for your online accounts. 2FA adds an extra layer of security by requiring two or more verification methods. It’s not just a password; it could be a code sent to your phone, a fingerprint or a facial scan. This makes it much harder for scammers to gain unauthorized access.Cybercriminals often exploit vulnerabilities in outdated software. Regularly updating your operating system, antivirus software and other applications can protect you from these threats. You can also set your devices to update automatically so you don’t have to remember to do it manually.Be cautious about sharing personal information online. Think twice before entering sensitive details on websites, especially if you’re unsure they’re legitimate. Use privacy settings on social media to control who can see your information and be wary of unsolicited requests for your personal data.If you have strong antivirus software installed on your device, it can protect you when you receive these types of scam emails or accidentally open the attachment or click a link. The best way to protect yourself from clicking malicious links that install malware that may get access to your private information is to have antivirus protection installed on all your devices. See my tips and best picks on how to protect yourself from identity theft. Just like Jeanne did, contact the government agency, financial institution or company directly using contact information from their official websites. Ensure that you never use any contact details provided in unsolicited communications, as these can be falsified by scammers to mislead you and become a potential victim.By incorporating these strategies, you can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim of phishing scams. Stay vigilant and proactive in protecting your personal information.HEARTLESS SCAMMERS ARE PREYING ON PEOPLE’S LOST PET ANGUISHWhen it comes to protecting yourself from scammers, you can never be too prepared. UC Berkeley slapped with federal civil rights complaint, accused of ‘unlawful’ racial discrimination

[ad_1]

The University of California, Berkeley has been hit with a federal civil rights complaint for allegedly engaging in discrimination on the basis of race and nation of origin. A new federal civil rights complaint filed by the Equal Protection Project (EPP) on Tuesday demanded an investigation into programs at the Haas School of Business, alleging that certain students were excluded from an MBA (Masters of Business Administration) preparatory program due to their race and ethnicity, violating Title VI and the Equal Protection Clause.Cornell Law professor William A. Jacobson founded the EPP to ensure fair treatment of all people without regard to race or ethnicity – and he feels Berkeley is being unfair to non-Hispanic students. The complaint, which has been obtained by Fox News Digital, details that the Haas Thrive Fellows program is to « educate, prepare, and motivate Latinx/Hispanic individuals » to apply and succeed at a top business school. « The Haas Thrive Fellows program openly discriminates on the basis of race and national origin. Haas clearly tells students the program is intended for ‘Latinx/Hispanic’ students, setting up a barrier that would deter other students from applying. Regardless of the purpose of the discrimination, it is wrong and unlawful, » Jacobson told Fox News Digital. BERKELEY ANTI-ISRAEL AGITATORS MET WITH STERN UNIVERSITY WARNING: ‘WE WILL TAKE THE STEPS NECESSARY' »After the Supreme Court’s 2023 decision in Students for Fair Admission, it is clear that discriminating on the basis of race to achieve diversity is not lawful, » he continued. « Haas knows better than to run a program that excludes and discriminates against students based on race and ethnicity. »Berkeley did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Jacobson feels that the « harm from racial and ethnic educational barriers is that it racializes not just the specific program, but the entire campus. » He said that non-discrimination standards, which have been adopted by University of California institutions, should apply to the Haas School of Business. CALIFORNIA SENATE CANDIDATE BLASTS UC BERKELEY FOR ‘PANDERING’ TO ANTI-ISRAEL PROTESTERS AFTER DEBATE CANCELED »At every level, by policy the university rejects discrimination. UC-Berkeley and Haas should live up to their own set of rules. Sending a message to students that access to opportunities is dependent on race and ethnicity is damaging to the fabric of campus, » Jacobson said. « Haas needs to come up with a remedial plan to compensate students shut out of this educational opportunity due to race or ethnicity, » Jacobson added. « The Equal Protection Project calls on the leadership of UC and UC-Berkeley to make sure nondiscrimination standards are upheld throughout the university system. »The EPP’s guiding principle is that there is « no ‘good’ form of racism, » and that the « remedy for racism never is more racism, » according to its website. « Colleges and universities need to adopt the approach of EqualProtect.org, which is that there is no ‘good’ form of racism, and the remedy for racism is not more racism, » Jacobson said.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sector on the northern border has seen more apprehensions in the last fiscal year than the previous 13 years combined. The Swanton Sector Border sector has seen 15,000 apprehensions in the 10 months of fiscal year 2024, the largest volume ever recorded by the sector, over 14,000 more than was recorded in fiscal year 2021, according to a report on CBS 19.The sector, which spans 295 miles of the border with Canada and covers all of Vermont and parts of upstate New York and New Hampshire, has seen its numbers of apprehensions in just part of this fiscal year exceed the previous 13 combined, the report notes, adding that illegal migrants from 85 different countries have attempted to illegally cross in the area.WATCH: RESIDENTS ALONG THE BORDER TRUST TRUMP OVER HARRIS ON BORDER SECURITYThe report comes as illegal immigration continues to be an issue at the top of voters’ minds ahead of November’s election, with many polls showing voters have been dissatisfied with the record amount of illegal crossings at the nation’s southern border between 2021 and 2023.While the southern border has received much of the attention, the report notes that the northern border has also reported a record number of illegal entries and apprehensions so far this fiscal year. In FY 2023, a record number of 190,000 migrants were apprehended at the U.S. border, while 162,865 have so far been apprehended at the border with Canada in the current fiscal year.TEXAS RESIDENTS AFFECTED BY BORDER SECURITY UNDER BIDEN-HARRIS ADMIN EXPRESS FEAR OF FUTURE ATTACKThe report also noted that close to 1,100 known or suspected terrorists (KSTs) have attempted to enter the U.S. from Canada between 2021 and 2023, making up a large percentage of the over 1,700 total KSTs that have been apprehended nationwide since FY 2021.CBP and the White House did not immediately respond to a Fox News Digital request for comment.Get the latest updates on the ongoing border crisis from the Fox News Digital immigration hub.

Canadian Paralympian wants to be treated like elite athlete: ‘Not your inspiration porn’

[ad_1]

The Paralympic Games are in the final stretch this week with China maintaining a comfortable lead in gold medals and total medals over Great Britain and the United States.Canada has 12 medals in total as of Tuesday – two gold, four silver and six bronze. While sports fans tune in to watch the events in Paris, one Canadian Olympian wanted to remind the world to appreciate Paralympians for the elite athletes that they are.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMAllison Lang’s message was sent in an opinion column on Today.com. Lang, who is a sitting volleyball player, explained that being a Paralympian « isn’t less impressive » than being an Olympian and fired back at some of the comments she’s seen on social media. »Another comment I see people saying is: ‘If they can do that with no legs, then I have no excuse not to go for my run.’ I shared my thoughts on this on social media, noting that Paralympians are not your inspiration porn, » Lang said. »These comments make us feel less than other people. Paralympians are elite athletes. I hope to educate people so that when they watch the Paralympics, they see we’re not just inspirational — we’re also aspirational. It’s great to feel inspired by incredible athletic achievements. That’s what the Olympics and Paralympics are all about. Be inspired by our accomplishments, not by our existence. »Lang also tried to dispel beliefs that she is considered to be an « ableist, » and she winces at comments made by some in her everyday life.PARALYMPIAN WHO WAS HIT BY A CAR LAST WEEK WINS GOLD, YEARS AFTER AFGHANISTAN WAR INJURY »Once an older woman told me how inspiring it was that I lived independently, » she said. « I know she was likely coming from a place of kindness, but when you say disabled people are inspiring for doing everyday tasks that able-bodied people do, it dehumanizes us. We don’t want people to look at us like that. »The Paralympics run through Sept. 8.American Paralympian Ezra Frech implored fans to watch the athletes participating in the Games and expressed a similar notion to Lang’s when he spoke to Fox News Digital in June. »I would hope that the average American or average [viewer] recognizes how elite some of these sports are, » Frech said. « People get confused and sometimes feel sorry for some of the athletes. There is no place for pity in the Paralympic Games. These are the best athletes on the planet. They just happen to have a physical disability. »If you want to tune in and watch high, high, high-level sport, that’s what you tune in to watch the Paralympic Games for. It’s not a sob story, it’s not a pity party. These are the best athletes on the planet competing against one another. And that’s what I hope people take away from the Paralympics. »Of course, it’s going to be inspiring. Of course, it’s going to be jaw-dropping and shocking and amazing, the same way any other sporting event is. But by no means do you watch the Paralympic Games to feel sorry for athletes. This is elite sport. »Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Pence urges GOP to unite behind Ukraine in bid to counter China, Russia

[ad_1]

FIRST ON FOX – In a bid to urge fellow members of the Republican Party to unite behind Ukraine, former Vice President Mike Pence is hitting back on the GOP’s opposition to continued U.S. support for Kyiv in its war against Russia. The number one reason Pence argues the GOP should back Ukraine is also the party’s chief argument against continued support – China. »China is openly assisting Russia in its invasion of Ukraine, » Pence said in a Tuesday memo in coordination with the conservative nonprofit, Advancing American Freedoms. « Defeating Russia hamstrings China. HOUSE PASSES $60B UKRAINE AID BILL AS GOP REBELS THREATEN TO OUST JOHNSON »Russian control over Ukraine would provide China with more oil and natural gas, further fueling China’s expansionist ambitions, » he added.Pence also argued that a win for Russia would be a win for China and further empower both authoritarian regimes. Many Republicans in the Upper Chamber, like Sen. Lindsey Graham and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, have unequivocally backed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy – some even making the trip to Ukraine, while many Republicans in the House have opposed more U.S. support over concerns related to spending. GOP division on the matter not only held up U.S. support for Ukraine and significantly impacted its war effort during the winter and spring months, but it could also spell trouble for the party as Americans head to the pulls this November. « The Biden-Harris administration has failed America at home and abroad, so it is small wonder there are skeptics of continuing aid to Ukraine, » Pence said in a statement to Fox News Digital. « But the simple fact is America will be less secure if Ukraine falls. « A more powerful Russia will only encourage China to be more aggressive. Standing firm in providing lethal aid to Ukraine will restrain authoritarian regimes from Tehran to Beijing, and, most importantly, will protect and secure our great nation, » he added.RUSSIA HITS UKRAINE FOR 2ND DAY WITH ‘OUTRAGEOUS,’ ‘COWARDLY’ MISSILE ATTACKS ON CIVILIAN AREASHowever, China is not the only concern some in the GOP have floated when it comes to continued Ukrainian support. Concerns over U.S. border security and the massive debt Washington faces have also been routinely cited as major issues, prompting some to opt out of supporting Kyiv. »Securing the border is primarily an issue of willpower, not a $$$ problem, » Pence said, claiming that Putin in the past has « weaponized refugees » and he could do it again if he isn’t stopped in Ukraine. « While there’s no question that the federal government has a massive overspending problem, lethal aid to Ukraine has been worth every penny, » he said. The memo pointed out that the U.S. has used just 1.5 % of its federal budget to defend Ukraine and to « degrad[e] the Russian military from the second best in the world to the second best in Ukraine. » »The cost of a Russian attack on a NATO ally, who we are treaty-bound to defend, would quickly exceed 1.5% of the federal budget, » he added. « It is in America’s best interests for Ukraine to win the war. »

Vice President Kamala Harris has closed the enthusiasm gap with former President Trump as Democratic confidence surges in the wake of their Chicago convention, according to a new poll. The USA Today/Suffolk University poll found Harris leading Trump 48% to 43% among likely voters, a lead that lies within the poll’s margin of error. The swing toward Democrats also held true down ballot in the poll, with 48% of likely voters saying they planned to vote for the Democratic candidate in their local congressional election, compared to 43% for Republicans. That represents a seven-point swing from earlier this year, when Republicans held a slight 47-45 advantage over Democrats. The USA Today poll surveyed 1,000 likely voters over landline and cellphone from Aug. 25-28, after the Democratic National Convention. Trump focus on inflation, jobs can make inroads with Black voters, Chicago Republican leader says

[ad_1]

FIRST ON FOX: Abortion is not a primary issue on the ballot for Black voters this election, according to Chicago Southside Republicans Chair Devin Jones. Instead, he said, Black voters – particularly men – are much more concerned about financial opportunities and entrepreneurship. »I think if the Trump campaign definitely hit harder on the issues that specifically impact the Black community, for instance, inflation, which has made it harder to afford basic necessities, I think there is a jobs crisis, unemployment and an entrepreneurship crisis in the Black community, » Jones told Fox News Digital in an interview. « And so if there were surrogates who specifically outlined policies that talked about those things and directed it to the Black community. »Former President Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, hopes to earn more of the Black vote in what is turning out to be a neck and neck race against Vice President Harris, the Democrat nominee, and has previously said he’s growing in popularity among Black men.PRO-LIFERS BLAST TRUMP ‘BETRAYAL’ WITH SHIFTING ABORTION STANCE, ANSWER ON FLORIDA AMENDMENT 4During Trump’s first term, he championed several initiatives aimed at Black voters, including opportunity zones and funding historically black colleges. « This is a very progressive area, » Jones said of Chicago. « And a lot of our issues, as far as joblessness, the housing crisis, the lack of entrepreneurship opportunities, is because of a state and local government that produces heavy regulation, heavy taxation, which means that there’s less opportunity. So, I think if he could speak to how at the federal level he would be a partner to us as we fight against local overreach, that would go a long way to capturing kind of those on the fence and even some Black Democrats. »Jones also said when he’s talking to people on the ground, he doesn’t normally « hear people talking about abortion like that, » even though the issue of abortion has been catapulted in recent weeks to the spotlight for both the Democrat and Republican platforms. HARRIS REPEATS DEBUNKED CLAIM TRUMP WANTS TO ‘BAN’ ABORTION DURING FIRST CAMPAIGN RALLY SINCE BIDEN QUIT RACE »Abortion is an issue because the vast majority of abortions are because of financial issues, » Jones said. « So, if you remedy the lack of economic opportunity and ability to provide for families, you will see a decrease in abortion, » Jones said. « Now me, personally, I would like to see President Trump and any Republican have a hard line stance against abortion. »Trump’s latest – and clearest – comments about Florida’s Amendment 4, which would upend the state’s ban on abortions after six weeks’ gestation and enshrine a constitutional right to abortion in the state, may blunt some of the criticism he’s received from pro-life advocates. After Trump made remarks on Thursday that appeared to indicate he might back the amendment, he told Fox News Channel’s Bryan Llenas on Friday afternoon: « I’ll be voting ‘no.' »JD VANCE VOWS TRUMP WOULD NOT IMPOSE FEDERAL ABORTION BAN, VETO IT IF IT COMES ACROSS HIS DESKFlorida voters will have the final say on Amendment 4 at the polls in November.Fox News Digital’s Emma Colton contributed to this report.

New surgical technology can ‘light up’ bacteria in wounds, helping to prevent infections

[ad_1]

Up to 5% of people who have surgery can develop an infection — which can prolong healing and lead to dangerous complications, studies have shown. Additionally, chronic wounds affect around 6.5 million patients in the U.S.Some bacteria can’t be seen with the human eye, which means they may be missed by physicians when cleaning a wound. Now, a new medical technology that uses fluorescent light has shown to be effective in detecting missed bacteria, according to new research led by University of Southern California, Los Angeles (USC).BURN TREATMENT MADE FROM PINEAPPLES REDUCES NEED FOR SKIN GRAFTING SURGERY: ‘NEW AVENUE OF WOUND CARE’In a review of 26 medical studies, a handheld device using autofluorescence (AF) imaging successfully « lit up » bacteria in nine out of 10 wounds, with each different type of bacteria turning a different color, according to a press release from USC.The findings were published recently in the medical journal Advances in Wound Care.In traditional cases, surgeons take tissue samples from wounds and send them to a lab for testing to determine the types of bacteria that are present, the researchers noted. It can take days to get the results, during which time infection can set in.BLOOD BANKS SEARCHING FOR TYPE O BLOOD AMID EMERGENCY SHORTAGE: ‘WE ALWAYS HAVE A NEED' »Bacteria can cause wounds to become infected when they enter and colonize the cut or wound, » Dr. Raj Dasgupta, pulmonary and critical care specialist at Huntington Health in Los Angeles, told Fox News Digital. « If a person does not receive treatment for a wound infection, the infection can spread to other parts of the body, which may lead to serious complications. » (Dasgupta was not involved in the new study.)The lighting technology allows clinicians to see bacteria in real time, leading to more targeted and effective wound care, according to the study researchers. »Fluorescence imaging, particularly with devices like MolecuLight, offers a significant advancement in the ability to detect bacterial loads in chronic wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers, » lead study author Dr. David G. Armstrong, professor of neurological surgery and director of the USC Limb Preservation Program, told Fox News Digital. It could also help prevent the need for antibiotics, as the bacteria can be removed before infection occurs. »The study also explores the potential of wearable fluorescence imaging devices, which could further revolutionize surgical debridement by providing continuous visualization during the procedure, » Armstrong added. One of the most surprising discoveries in the study was that high amounts of bacteria didn’t always cause symptoms, but still slowed down the healing process, the researchers stated. This highlighted the need for « more sophisticated diagnostic tools » in wound management.OZEMPIC PATIENTS MAY FACE DANGEROUS RISKS DURING SURGERY, DOCTORS WARN »The big idea here is that we might be able to get out in front of an infection before having to give someone antibiotics, » said Armstrong. « This is the ultimate kind of stewardship to promote superbugs. »Based on this study, Armstrong recommends that clinicians consider integrating fluorescence imaging into their standard wound care protocols, especially for chronic wounds like diabetic foot ulcers. « This technology not only improves the accuracy of debridement, but also aids in early intervention, potentially reducing the risk of complications like infections and amputations, » he told Fox News Digital. « We also recommend that health care providers stay informed about advancements in wearable imaging technologies, which may soon provide even greater flexibility and precision in wound care. »Dr. Patrick Davis, a facial plastic surgeon at Davis Facial Plastics in Beverly Hills, California, emphasized the importance of preventing bacterial infections — especially for revision rhinoplasties, which he said have a higher risk of this type of complication. »There has been modest research with the use of fluorescence to illuminate a particular wound bed, » Davis, who was not involved in the new study, told Fox News Digital. « The idea is that certain bacteria will emit a certain wavelength of light. Staph infections, for example, would emit a different color than another type of bacteria. »CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTERThis can be helpful in confirming what kind of antibiotic to use for treatment, Davis noted, while also telling the surgeon the « burden of bacteria, » which indicates the level of bacteria in the wound. The use of this technology still needs more research, according to the surgeon. »At this time, this technology would not replace a simple swab of the area and then a laboratory test determining exactly what type of bacteria is present and what antibiotic to use, » he said. »However, this technology can give a real-time hint at the family of bacteria that is present, although it may not be so specific — that is still reserved for a laboratory to determine. »Dasgupta agreed that this device could be a « safe, effective, accurate and easy-to-use tool » to improve the assessment of wounds, but he noted that fluorescent light imaging has some limitations when used to detect bacterial infections.DOCTORS INCREASINGLY USING AR SMART GLASSES IN OPERATING ROOM: ‘POTENTIAL TO REVOLUTIONIZE SURGERIES' »The evaluation is limited to bacteria that produce fluorescent molecules on the skin’s surface and subsurface, » Dasgupta told Fox News Digital. »The detection ability is also dependent on the number of bacteria present in the wound, » he went on. « Also, wound depth cannot be captured with this type of evaluation. »The primary limitation of this study is that it depended on « controlled lighting conditions » in order for the fluorescence imaging devices to function accurately, Armstrong noted. For more Health articles, visit www.foxnews.com/health »This could be a challenge in certain clinical settings, particularly in real-time surgical environments, » he said.More research is also needed to confirm the effectiveness of wearable devices compared to the existing handheld devices. The study is partially funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and the National Science Foundation’s Center to Stream Healthcare in Place.

New Texas law takes effect requiring parental approval for children to create social media accounts

[ad_1]

A new law has taken effect in Texas that requires parental approval for a child to create a social media account.Parts of the SCOPE Act, or House Bill 18, went into effect on Sunday after Republican Gov. Greg Abbott signed the legislation last year.In a committee hearing last year, Republican state Rep. Shelby Slawson cited threats that unmonitored social media use could pose for children, including cyberbullying and child predators, according to Fox 4. »A Texas teenager was rescued from a shed in North Carolina where she was being held by a predator who allegedly lured her away by a chat app, » she said.TELEGRAM BOSS’ ARREST IN FRANCE IS ‘EXISTENTIAL THREAT TO FREE SPEECH,’ TECH ENTREPRENEUR SAYSHowever, the law in its current form would not directly flag those types of contacts, Fox 4 reported.Last week, a judge blocked provisions that would have required social media companies to filter out harmful content. But the judge allowed the requirement for parental consent for children creating an account and the authority for parents to supervise their child’s online activities. Some social media companies have argued that there are already protections in place to protect children online. »While we strongly agree with the underlying intent of the bill, we oppose the bill as filed, » Antigone Davis, a spokesperson for Facebook parent company Meta, told Fox 4. »We’ve built over 30 tools to help young people be safe and have a positive experience on our platform, » Davis added. « We have parental supervision tools, set time limits, and the ability for parents to see who their child is following. »In the same hearing last year, a Meta representative testified that Facebook and Instagram already have safeguards in place to protect children and that teenagers’ accounts use AI to screen for fake dates of birth being entered to create an account.Meta also said it blocks targeted ads for a variety of topics on its platforms.GERMANY STARTED CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION INTO SOCIAL MEDIA USER FOR MOCKING POLITICIAN FOR BEING ‘FAT’Brian Dixon, a child psychiatrist with the Texas Medical Association, spoke at the hearing about what he has observed in his young patients regarding the impact of social media on their mental health. »Now kids have access to all things all the time, and there is no filter. They have no perspective to when they are being advertised and when they are not, » he said.Courts have blocked similar legislation passed in other states seeking to regulate social media access for young people.

44 days: Kamala Harris has yet to do formal press conference since emerging as Democratic nominee

[ad_1]

Vice President Kamala Harris’ interview drought finally ended Thursday, but after 44 days as the presumptive and now official Democratic nominee for president, she has yet to hold an official press conference.Under pressure to sit down for a substantive interview after weeks of stonewalling, she agreed to a sit-down with CNN’s Dana Bash last Thursday in Georgia, joined by running mate Tim Walz.Harris defended some of her noted policy flip-flops on issues like fracking and immigration, saying her « values » hadn’t changed. She was also pressed on whether she had regrets about defending President Biden’s mental acuity after his debate, given he dropped out of the race less than a month later. She also said she wanted to « turn the page on the last decade of what I believe has been contrary to where the spirit of our country really lies. »Bash pointed out Harris had been vice president for three-and-a-half of those years, but Harris countered she meant moving on from this « era, » seemingly referring to the political rise of Donald Trump that began in 2015.HARRIS CLAIMS SHE ‘MADE CLEAR’ HER POSITION ON FRACKING IN 2020 – TRANSCRIPT SHOWS ANOTHER STORYFollowing Harris’ first sit-down interview, NBC News Washington correspondent Yamiche Alcindor, who is known for her glowing Biden-Harris coverage, appeared unimpressed. « Harris keeps saying ‘my values haven’t changed’ while not explaining why her positions have changed, » Alcindor wrote. As to when she’ll actually do a formal press conference, that day may never come. Sunday marked exactly six weeks since Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed Harris; no other Democrat challenged her and she quickly wrapped up the nomination from there. »You will not see one press conference from her in the next 75 days until Election Day, » Fox News contributor Joe Concha predicted earlier this month.NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck feels the vice president « obviously owes it to the American people to hold free-wheeling press conferences where reporters can, unlike what happened [Thursday] with CNN’s Dana Bash, ask follow-up questions. » »For every softball from, say, ABC or NPR, you’ll hope a liberal journalist will show some courage to do the right thing, » Houck told Fox News Digital. « The interview itself had a positive atmosphere. From the get-go in the hype video-like opening by Bash, CNN put forward a perception that this was an event, not a grinding fact-finding mission, » Houck continued. « She missed a litany of topics with Harris. Allowing death row inmates to vote, closing ICE, defunding the police, ending private insurance, girl’s sports, the filibuster, Jussie Smollett, the Minneapolis bail fund, systemic racism… those were just a few of the areas she could have touched on. »Former President Trump has sought to highlight the contrast in media availability between the two, sitting for several lengthy interviews in recent weeks and also holding a pair of press conferences.Harris received mixed reviews for her showing on Thursday with Bash, where she took the majority of the questions but nevertheless had Walz there for support. One point that received praise from liberals was her pointed dismissal of a question about Trump’s suggestion that she didn’t embrace being Black until adulthood. Calling attacks around race from Trump a tired « playbook, » she told Bash to move on to the next question. But conservative CNN commentator Scott Jennings said the Trump campaign should be « salivating » over one of the revelations from the interview, which appeared to be her embrace of so-called « Bidenomics. » »She is making it clear that she will embrace and be a continuation of Biden’s economic policy — his record — what they’ve done, » he said. « She offered no remorse, no regrets, no introspection about anything they’ve done. »HUCKABEE SANDERS BLASTS HARRIS FOR DOING JOINT INTERVIEW WITH WALZ: CAN’T DO IT ‘BY HERSELF’By doing the interview, Harris met the bar she set three weeks ago that she wanted to schedule one by the end of the month. Whether pressure will grow for her to do more, and also her first solo interview as a candidate, remains to be seen. »My fear is, because Bash wasn’t like, say, CBS’s Steve Kroft or NPR’s Steve Inskeep salivating at the sight of Barack Obama, the liberal media will claim this and the upcoming ABC debate are sufficient interview time for the campaign, » Houck said.Fox News Digital’s Paul Steinhauser contributed to this report.

[ad_1]

San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall will miss at least four games after being put on the non-football injury list after getting shot in a robbery attempt on Saturday. The team’s decision to put Pearsall on the list came just 48 hours after the rookie’s gunshot, meaning he won’t play in the team’s games against the New York Jets, Minnesota Vikings, Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots, and he would be eligible to return for the team’s fifth game against the Cardinals on Oct. 6.Pearsall, who was drafted in the first round with the 31st overall pick by the 49ers back in April, sustained several injuries after being shot in the chest by a 17-year-old, who tried to steal Pearsall’s Rolex watch, according to San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott. Pearsall was released from the hospital on Sunday.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMThe NFL player, 23, had been walking alone shortly after 3:30 p.m. local time when a suspect attempted to rob him with a gun in the Union Square area, according to officials. Scott said that more than one shot was fired. »A struggle between Mr. Pearsall and the suspect ensued, and gunfire from the suspect’s gun struck both Mr. Pearsall and the subject. »Scott said that investigators believe the teen had acted alone, adding that there was no indication that Pearsall had been targeted because he’s a football player.SAN FRANCISCO MAYORAL CANDIDATE TAKES JAB AT OPPONENT AFTER 49ERS’ RICKY PEARSALL SHOOTING: ‘ENOUGH IS ENOUGH’Pearsall’s mother, Erin Pearsall, shared an update on the NFL player’s health on Sunday. « Update on my baby boy, » she started. « First and (foremost) I want to thank GOD for protecting my baby boy. His final season last year was his best as a college player, and he put up 965 yards receiving for four touchdowns across 12 games, earning a selection in the first round this year.Pearsall is not the first NFL rookie with high expectations to suffer gunshot wounds ahead of their first seasons in recent years. Washington Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. was shot in Washington, D.C., after an attempted carjacking. One of the bullets struck his knee but passed through without causing any significant damage. Robinson had been named the team’s starting running back just prior to that, but he returned to the field just six weeks after the shooting to take over his starting role. Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
