Allan Lichtman predicts Harris as 2024 winner because ‘Democrats got smart’ and did this

[ad_1]

The American University historian who has correctly predicted the outcomes of nine of the last ten presidential elections tells Fox News Digital that the Democrats « finally got smart » by rallying around Kamala Harris as their candidate – and that is one of the reasons why he thinks she will be November’s winner. The formula Allan Lichtman has used to correctly predict nearly every presidential race since 1984, his « Keys to the White House, » was developed in 1981 with mathematician Vladimir Keilis-Borok and is based on their analysis of presidential elections dating back to 1860. The « keys » consist of 13 true or false questions, parameters that, if true, favor stability. « The way it works is real simple. If six or more keys — any six — go against the White House party, they are predicted losers. Otherwise, they’re predicted winners, » Lichtman told Fox News Digital this week. « And by the way, this also led to a prediction of Donald Trump’s win, which made me virtually alone in making that prediction in 2016. » Lichtman says the Democrats represented by Harris could lose five keys « at most » and that is why he is predicting that « we are going to have a precedent-breaking election and Kamala Harris will become the first woman President of the United States. » WHO HAS THE ‘KEYS TO THE WHITE HOUSE’? HISTORIAN WITH ACE RECORD CALLING ELECTIONS WEIGHS IN ON TRUMP VERDICT »We’ve had an unprecedented situation of a sitting president dropping out on the eve of the convention, and it has affected my keys, » Lichtman continued. « Now, with Biden dropping out, the Democrats lost one key — the incumbency key. I thought perhaps the way things were looking, if Biden dropped out, the [Democrats] would have a big party brawl and that would cost them a second key, which could lose them the election. But the Democrats finally got smart and united behind Harris and that preserved the contest key. That means the shift only cost them one key. » TRUMP SLAMS ABC AHEAD OF PIVOTAL NETWORK-HOSTED DEBATE Lichtman describes the contest key as having « no serious contest for the incumbent-party nomination. » The other keys are as follows: party mandate, incumbency, third party, short-term economy, long-term economy, policy change, social unrest, scandal, foreign/military failure, foreign/military success, incumbent charisma and challenger charisma. « I think having Harris front and center rather than Joe Biden, the policymaker, has dampened enthusiasm for protests which helped salvage a second key, the social unrest key, » Lichtman also said. « The keys show that Kamala Harris is a predicted winner. » Fox News’ Chris Pandolfo contributed to this report.

Mental, physical ailments can develop among homeowners overtaken by squatters, according to expert

[ad_1]

Housing situations involving squatters take a toll on homeowners in more ways than anticipated. While property damage and legal fees can cost homeowners money, the mental health effects can be severe. Homeowners who have shared their stories of unwanted residents living in their homes have often brought to light the emotional stress that stems from sometimes unfathomable experiences. A Chicago woman named Darthula Young previously spoke to Fox News Digital about a squatter who lived in a property she inherited from her mother. The individual took over the home from September 2022 until July 2023, according to Young.ALABAMA REALTOR SHOCKED WHEN SQUATTER GREETS HER AND POTENTIAL BUYERS AT HOME SHOWING »It’s emotionally draining. It’s overwhelming, » Young previously told Fox News Digital.  « The first time I got access to my mother’s apartment and when the squatters moved in, we did get access and were able to go in, but to be there and see that somebody has totally taken over all of her personal properties and her things are there, I didn’t think it would make me emotional, but it made me very emotional, » Young said. « As I went through this process, I was totally overwhelmed by it, » Young said. « The people that I have talked to who are going through this situation are saying the same thing. They are so overwhelmed by the situation. »PEACH STATE CRAWLING WITH VACANT HOUSING; MORE SQUATTING CASES HEAD TO COURT IN GEORGIAA home is a place that represents safety and security, and when that is stripped away, the brain and body are affected. « If we think about safety needs, our home is one of those things that represents safety in terms of security, stability and protection from harm, » Alexis Abate, a licensed professional counselor and holistic mindset coach based in New Jersey, told Fox News Digital in a phone interview. When someone arrives home to squatters, « they first feel an emotion of violation. And with that, we also have to understand that emotional stress can manifest into physical symptoms, and that chronic stress and anxiety can lead to health-related issues such as insomnia, hypertension, back pain. It puts us in that state of fight or flight. » SQUATTERS IMPACT MORE THAN JUST HOMEOWNERS, COMMUNITY AFFECTED BY UNLAWFUL INHABITANTSWhen trauma happens on any scale to a person, violent or otherwise, Abate said it can have a lasting impact. « They assaulted me and threatened me, » Patti Peeples, a Florida homeowner, previously told Fox News Digital of the squatters who lived in her home for over a month. « I still worry here at my own house because the squatters know my address, that they will do something to my current property, to my pets, to me. And, so, these are all residual traumatic stresses that come out of being in the midst of a squatting situation. »A traumatic event like this leaves « a neural imprint on our brain, » according to Abate. The traumatic event becomes something that isn’t easily pushed aside and forgotten. When a person goes through a traumatic situation, there are plenty of resources for help.ADVICE FROM PROFESSIONALS ON PROTECTING YOUR HOME AGAINST SQUATTERS »A lot of times, it’s relying on our loved ones and family members and also our community. We can look to our churches, » Abate said. « Online, there are tons of free resources. I always say, let’s use social media as a tool, and this is where we can connect to finding therapists or psychiatrists or mental health professionals online. If you’re not able to have transportation to go see someone, there are a lot of convenient ways now to get that support. »In addition to finding support from others, homeowners who are experiencing or have experienced an unwanted squatter can find power within themselves by seeking solutions which build inner strength and regain control. « Also, I find that there’s a benefit to grounding yourself and asking, ‘What can I control in the situation?' » Abate said. The financial stress for a homeowner overtaken by a squatter is often unimaginable. If bills add up, consult financial and legal professionals regarding your situation to recover the money that was lost.Leverage the expertise of a lawyer to help guide you through a squatting case and get in contact with a local attorney who specializes in real estate litigation. »Sometimes we don’t have all the answers, and building confidence and resilience is about gaining wisdom through the pain that we’re experiencing, » Abate said. To assist with mental health stability, maintain movement and regular exercise and healthy eating habits. Ensure plenty of rest and outdoor activities are part of your day-to-day to relax your body, the National Institute of Mental Health recommends.

Fever must sign ‘enforcer’ to ‘protect’ Caitlin Clark from players who hit her, says former NBA All-Star

[ad_1]

The Indiana Fever are heading to the WNBA playoffs for the first time since 2016 and the first time in the Caitlin Clark era. The 22-year-old rookie has rewritten sections of the league’s record books over the last month, all while making the Fever one of the highest-temperature teams in the WNBA.Indiana currently holds a top-six seed in the playoffs. Clark’s supporting cast of Aliyah Boston, Nalyssa Smith and Kelsey Mitchell are all playing some of the best basketball of their careers during the recent stretch, as well. However, a former NBA All-Star claims the team is not yet complete and there is a critical missing piece. Many of the newest fans Clark has brought to the WNBA have been highly critical of several flagrant fouls and other questionable hits that have been committed against her this year. In four games against the rival Chicago Sky alone, Clark has been hit by three different players on three different flagrant foul calls that drew visceral backlash from fans on social media. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMClark has avoided major injuries and hasn’t let the hits prevent her from playing like an MVP candidate. But according to former NBA All-Star Joakim Noah, the team should still look to address the issue in the offseason by signing a player who can dish the punishment back against opponents who are too physical with Clark. »If I was the owner of the Indiana Fever, I would get a real enforcer in there to protect her, » Noah told Fox News Digital during an interview at « NBA Night » in the Emirates Suite at the U.S. Open in New York on Wednesday. Noah acknowledged that Clark may be getting hit by opposing players because they are aware of the talent she brings as a difference-maker on the court. « Sometimes I feel like she is getting hit because she is a very talented person, » he said. « But at the end of the day, we’re in the business of winning games, so if I’m the owner [of the Indiana Fever], I’m getting a real enforcer in there. » Many new and longtime WNBA fans have been highly critical of opponents who attack Clark. Sky rookie Angel Reese, who struck Clark in the head with her arm while trying to block a pass during a game on June 16, opened up about attacks from Clark fans dating back to their college careers during her podcast on Thursday. Fellow Sky player Diamond DeShields committed a flagrant-1 foul against Clark, knocking the rookie to the floor, in a game on Aug. 30, then posted the hate comments she got on Instagram. EX-NBA ALL-STAR ON WHY HE PICKS ANGEL REESE OVER CAITLIN CLARK FOR ROOKIE OF THE YEARHowever, Noah believes that the physical treatment Clark has received has been great for the WNBA. « I think it’s great, » Noah said when specifically asked about the fouls that have occurred against Chicago. « I think it’s all entertainment. » ESPN broadcaster Holly Rowe issued a similar sentiment to Noah’s in an interview with Fox News Digital last month. « I think it’s good for the game, » Rowe said. « I kind of love it because it is supposed to be salty, that’s why it’s competitive, that’s why it’s sports. »But even with the entertainment value that come with the hits, Noah insists the Fever should address the issue by getting an enforcer-type player as soon as they can. It’s a role that he himself is very familiar with. When Noah was a second-year player for the Chicago Bulls in 2008, the team used their first overall pick on star point guard Derrick Rose. Like Clark, Rose was an ascendant rookie who stunned the league with his talent, and was often given rough treatment by opposing veterans. He was knocked to the floor dozens of times, especially on trips to the basket.Noah, as one of Rose’s longtime teammates on the Bulls and when the duo joined the Knicks in 2016, would often come to the defense of his teammate. But Noah has also been on the other end of physical play against transcendent talents. Noah, as the team’s defensive anchor at center, progressively became one of Chicago’s most confrontational players, particularly when playing against superstar LeBron James. During his tenure with the Bulls, Noah played in 21 playoff games against James’ Clevelan Cavaliers and Miami Heat teams, and became infamous for committing fouls and often getting up and yelling in James’ face. Many altercations required referees to intervene and separate the two players. Not only that, but Noah tried to make it a priority to tell other teammates not to give James any special treatment because of his talent. « I feel like people get mesmerized by that and knowing that he had fans on the court, so that is something that would just frustrate me. So if I saw one of my teammates have that energy toward him, I was the guy to kind of say, ‘You better stop that s— right now. So that was my role, people thought that I was a hater for it, » Noah said in the suite, while promoting Emirates as the official global airline partner of the NBA and the first title partner of the Emirates NBA Cup. So, for Noah, as someone with experience on both sides of the situation, he believes that it’s a position the Fever are currently sorely lacking in. Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Why Americans need more face-to-face civil discussions ‘with folks outside their own bubble’

[ad_1]

I recently wrote a book in which I tried to understand America’s past and present by living like the Founding Fathers did. We’re talking candles, quill pens, muskets, you name it. In a new series of articles — of which this is the first — I’m sharing some of the life lessons I learned from the Founders. (See the video at the top of this article.) NEW YORK CITY MAN ‘LIVED’ THE CONSTITUTION FOR A YEAR. HERE ARE 7 THINGS HE LEARNED My favorite Founding Father is Benjamin Franklin for many reasons. He was a wonderful writer, political thinker and inventor (including of swim fins!). But another reason I admire Franklin is that he was a huge fan of civil discourse. In early America, Franklin formed a social club called the Junto. This group of men met every Friday to have in-depth conversations about how to improve themselves and their country. The rules encouraged a « spirit of inquiry » and discouraged a « fondness for dispute. » The idea was to have more questioning, less arguing. I tried to honor the Founders’ ideal of civil discourse during my year of living constitutionally. And one way I did so was to host 12 people at my home for an 18th-century-style dinner party. We ate by candlelight. We had beef stew with cloves (early Americans loved their cloves). AMERICA WILL BE CELEBRATING ITS 250TH BIRTHDAY AND EVERYONE’S INVITED: ‘BE INSPIRED FOR OUR COUNTRY’S FUTURE’ We drank Martha Washington’s rum punch. We recited a toast from the Founding Fathers: « To freedom from mobs as well as kings. » But more important than the food and drink was the makeup of the guests. I invited people from all over the political spectrum — conservatives, libertarians, moderates and progressives — and we had a wonderful discussion. A civil, in-depth discussion about the Constitution and America. Instead of framing the dinner as a debate, we tried to look at it like a puzzle that we could all work to solve together. For instance, we asked each other what we believe. We tried to figure out why we believe what we believe. We discussed what evidence might change our minds or evolve our views. The 12 of us assembled that night did not agree on everything. But one thing we did agree on was this: Americans need more face-to-face civil discussions with folks outside their own bubble. I believe we need more of the spirit of inquiry. I think we need more listening. We need far fewer outraged posts on social media. CRISIS ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES: WHAT UNIVERSITY PRESIDENTS CAN LEARN FROM THE FOUNDING FATHERSBen Franklin said that when we discuss politics or other controversial matters, we should avoid words such as « certainly » and « undoubtedly. » Instead, we should use words such as « it appears to me, » or « if I am not mistaken, » or « I should think it so for such-and-such reasons. » Alexander Hamilton had a similar view. In « The Federalist Papers, » he urges us to avoid an « intolerant spirit, » adding that « in politics, as in religion, it is equally absurd to aim at making proselytes by fire and sword. » At the Constitutional Convention, Ben Franklin told a little humorous parable (the man enjoyed his jests). Franklin said there was a French lady who was talking to her sister one day.The French lady remarked how strange it was that she’d never met anyone except herself who was correct on every single issue. CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTERFranklin’s point was that all of us are all that French lady. We all believe we have a monopoly on the truth. I know I feel that way most of the time. But I try to fight that inclination and do what the Founders would do: Engage in civil discourse with people from all walks of life. One other piece of advice. For more Lifestyle articles, visit www.foxnews.com/lifestyleIn this election year, if you do decide to have an 18th century-style dinner with your neighbors, take it from me.It’s OK to clean up using a 21st-century dishwasher.

‘The Substance’ star Demi Moore says ‘insecurities about my body’ led her to take on racy roles

[ad_1]

Demi Moore admitted that some of her professional choices were motivated by her desire to overcome her personal insecurities.During an interview with Variety, the 61-year-old actress reflected on why she decided to take on racy roles in movies including 1996’s « Striptease » and pose nude for Vanity Fair magazine covers when she was at the height of her fame. »One of the biggest misconceptions about me is that I loved my body, » Moore said. She continued, « The reality is, so much of it was me calling in certain projects that would give me an opportunity to help me overcome insecurities about my body. »DEMI MOORE, 61, FELT LIKE THERE WASN’T A PLACE FOR HER IN HOLLYWOOD AFTER 40″It was the same with the Vanity Fair covers; it was not that I loved it — it was about trying to free myself from the space of enslavement that I had put myself in, » the « Ghost » star added. The Emmy Award nominee explained that she was drawn to daring roles that broke gender stereotypes. »The other truth is, things that are provocative — not in a sexual way, but things that provoke meaningful thought — have always fascinated me, » Moore said.  She continued, « Take ‘Striptease’: There was an interesting kind of judgment placed on a woman who worked as a dancer, but the idea was that this was a woman trying to take care of her child in the best way she could. With ‘G.I. Jane,’ I thought, ‘if a woman is skilled enough and has the desire to [serve], why wouldn’t we want her there? »‘ « I didn’t understand why that door was closed. Many of my films had similar themes. ‘Indecent Proposal’ and ‘Disclosure’ are similar in a sense. We’d never seen a woman as the aggressor, as the abuser. »After rising to fame in the 1980s, Moore sparked controversy when she posed nude for a 1991 Vanity Fair cover titled « More Demi Moore » while the actress was seven months pregnant with her daughter Scout. She appeared naked again on the cover of Vanity Fair’s August 1992 issue, which was titled « Demi’s Birthday Suit. » In 2019, Moore stripped down to pose completely nude on the cover of the October issue of Harper’s Bazaar. In the mid-90s, Moore was the highest-paid actress in Hollywood but the critical and commercial failure of « Striptease » and 1997’s « G.I. Jane » marked the beginning of a sharp downturn in the actress’s career. While speaking with Variety, Moore named both films when asked about which of her movies didn’t get the credit that they deserved. »If I really look at ‘G.I. Jane,’ there was a faction of people out to shut that movie down before it even opened, » she recalled. « I did ‘Striptease’ and ‘G.I. Jane’ back-to-back. If anything in this industry has ever been stacked against me, it was having those two films come out at the same time and becoming the highest-paid actress on top of that. »LIKE WHAT YOU’RE READING? CLICK HERE FOR MORE ENTERTAINMENT NEWS »That moment was so powerful for me because it wasn’t just about me; it was about changing the playing field for all women, » Moore added. « But because I was portraying a stripper, I betrayed women. And because I played a soldier, I betrayed men. »The narrative quickly became ‘Well, she’s only getting paid that number because she’s playing a stripper.’ It hit me really hard. But at the same time, I understood that anybody who steps out first is going to take the hit. That goes for anybody challenging the status quo. »However, Moore told Variety that she would « definitely » make the same choices if she could get a do-over. »They gave me so much, » she said of « Striptease » and « G.I. Jane. » « That’s ultimately all I have, my experience. »CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT NEWSLETTERMoore is starring in the new horror movie « The Substance, » which was received with a 13-minute standing ovation when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May.In the film, Moore plays a 50-year-old celebrity who uses an experimental drug to temporarily create a younger version of herself. Moore appears in several full-frontal nude scenes alongside her co-star Margaret Qualley, who plays the younger version of her character. At the Cannes press conference for « The Substance, » Moore credited Qualley with making her feel comfortable during filming. »I had someone who was a great partner who I felt very safe with, » Moore said, via Variety. « We obviously were quite close  — naked — and we also got a lot of levity in those moments at how absurd those certain situations were. » »But ultimately, it’s just about really directing your communication and mutual trust, » she added.

Fans blast NFL over field conditions in Brazil as Packers, Eagles slip all over turf

[ad_1]

Several concerns had come up heading into the NFL’s first international game of the 2024 season, but slippery field conditions weren’t at the top of the list. The Philadelphia Eagles played host to the Green Bay Packers at Neo Quimica Arena in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Friday night. Several players voiced their concerns about safety in the lead up to the game, but by kickoff, the biggest threat appeared to be the field. Players on both sides slipped on most of the early drives, and it continued through the first half. Star running back Saquon Barkley, making his debut for the Eagles, suffered a major mishap on his first carry for Philadelphia and slipped for a five-yard loss. He eventually caught his footing and scored two touchdowns for Philly – hauling in an 18-yard pass from Jalen Hurts for his first score since parting ways with the New York Giants. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMThe Packers had their fair share of missed tackles thanks to the slippery conditions. Quarterback Jordan Love narrowly avoided disaster with just over five minutes remaining in the first half when he slipped on 1st and 10 and was nearly picked off after throwing the ball to avoid a sack. Fans at home appeared just as displeased with the conditions on the field. SAQUON BARKLEY SLIPS ON FIRST CARRY IN EAGLES DEBUT, TURNS IT AROUND FOR PHILADELPHIA TOUCHDOWN IN BRAZIL »If you’re going to make players fly all the way to Brazil to play a football game, the field conditions have to be better than this. All it takes is one bad slip, it’s dangerous, » one person posted on X. « Rather tear my ACL at MetLife than try and play football on Brazil field, » another wrote. « Never have a game in Brazil again @NFL. They are not made for this. I’ve seen 8-10 players already eat s— by just slipping on the field. What a disaster. » Former Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt even joined in on the conversation to offer a player’s perspective. « Soccer fields are made for speed and agility. Smaller bodies gliding across the surface with minimal contact, » he wrote in a post on X. « They are not properly conditioned to have the size & strength of NFL players cutting, pushing and driving all game on them.  This is common at international games. »Friday’s game is the NFL’s first-ever in Brazil. Neo Quimica Arena is home to Brazilian soccer team SC Corinthians. The stadium has previously played host to the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics. Before kickoff, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he hopes to have as many as 16 international games a season. « The ownership’s approved eight games already, » he said. « I hope to get that to 16 at some point in the future. Let’s see how that goes. »The Associated Press contributed to this report. Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love suffered an injury in the final seconds of his team’s 34-29 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil on Friday. On the second to last play of the game, with the Packers in their own territory and looking for a miracle to win the game, Love got his legs wrapped up by Eagles defenders. In the moment, he flipped the ball to running back Josh Jacobs and fell down. But after the play, Love was seen rolling in pain and needed help to walk off the field. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMFormer third-round pick Malik Willis, who the Packers traded for from the Tennessee Titans this offseason, ran the final two plays for Green Bay. TRUMP BASHES NFL OVER MAJOR KICKOFF CHANGELove, in his second year as a full-time starter, threw for 260 yards with two touchdowns and one interception before the injury, and had the Packers in position to take the lead multiple times late in the game. But Love failed to lead a touchdown drive on the Packers’ final five drives, only managing a field goal in the game’s final 27 minutes. Love had high expectations going into his second season after leading the Packers to a playoff win over the Dallas Cowboys last season. Love threw for 4,159 yards with 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2023, then 466 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions in two playoff games. If he is out for a significant amount of time, the Packers will need Willis to step up. The team’s next three games are against the Colts, Titans and Vikings – all teams who failed to make the playoffs last season. But their schedule gets tougher starting in Week 5 against the Los Angeles Rams.Meanwhile, the Eagles are undefeated in Brazil as they got the win in the first ever NFL game played in South America.Saquon Barkley led the way for Philadelphia, scoring three touchdowns with 132 total yards in his debut for the Eagles. Barkley recovered after his very first play for the Eagles was a five-yard loss after he slipped on a toss play. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts threw for 278 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions and also had a fumble after a failed exchange with new center Cameron Jurgens, who replaced Jason Kelce after his retirement this year. Jurgens had multiple bad snaps in the game and the Eagles nearly lost a fumble at the goal line in the final minute. Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

48 days: Kamala Harris has yet to do formal press conference since emerging as Democratic nominee

[ad_1]

Vice President Kamala Harris has gone 48 days as the presumptive, and now, official Democratic nominee for president without holding an official press conference.Under pressure to sit down for a substantive interview after weeks of stonewalling, Harris finally ended her interview drought last week when she was joined by running mate Tim Walz for a pre-taped piece with CNN’s Dana Bash last Thursday in Georgia that was a far cry from a traditional press conference. »She should absolutely hold regular press conferences. Americans have the right and need to know what her policy stances are, » conservative influencer Tim Young told Fox News Digital. « Anyone who wants to lead the free world should be able to handle questions from the press, » Young continued. « If Kamala can’t handle real questions from the press, she absolutely can’t handle negotiations with foreign leaders. »HARRIS CAMPAIGN AGREES TO ABC PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE RULES WITH SOME ‘ASSURANCES:’ REPORTDuring the CNN interview, Harris defended some of her noted policy flip-flops on issues like fracking and immigration, saying her « values » hadn’t changed. She was also pressed on whether she had regrets about defending President Biden’s mental acuity after his debate, given he dropped out of the race less than a month later. She also said she wanted to « turn the page on the last decade of what I believe has been contrary to where the spirit of our country really lies. »Bash pointed out Harris had been vice president for three-and-a-half of those years, but Harris countered she meant moving on from this « era, » seemingly referring to the political rise of Donald Trump that began in 2015.Harris also sat for two radio interviews this week that aired on Friday.HARRIS CLAIMS SHE ‘MADE CLEAR’ HER POSITION ON FRACKING IN 2020 – TRANSCRIPT SHOWS ANOTHER STORYAs to when she’ll actually do a formal press conference, that day may never come, at least while she’s still a candidate. »You will not see one press conference from her in the next 75 days until Election Day, » Fox News contributor Joe Concha predicted earlier this month.Conservative Radio Libre host Jorge Bonilla feels Harris should do a press conference but said it’s almost « irrelevant » because she continues to get a pass. « She is highly unlikely to do a press conference because the media have enabled and encouraged her ‘plexiglass basement’ strategy, wherein she preserves the illusion of being out there while remaining wholly inaccessible to the press and therefore unaccountable, » Bonilla told Fox News Digital.NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck feels the vice president « obviously owes it to the American people to hold free-wheeling press conferences where reporters can, unlike what happened [Thursday] with CNN’s Dana Bash, ask follow-up questions. » »For every softball from, say, ABC or NPR, you’ll hope a liberal journalist will show some courage to do the right thing, » Houck told Fox News Digital. « The interview itself had a positive atmosphere. From the get-go in the hype video-like opening by Bash, CNN put forward a perception that this was an event, not a grinding fact-finding mission, » Houck continued. « She missed a litany of topics with Harris. Allowing death row inmates to vote, closing ICE, defunding the police, ending private insurance, girl’s sports, the filibuster, Jussie Smollett, the Minneapolis bail fund, systemic racism… those were just a few of the areas she could have touched on. »Former President Trump has sought to highlight the contrast in media availability between the two, sitting for several lengthy interviews in recent weeks and also holding a pair of press conferences.Harris received mixed reviews for her showing with Bash, where she took the majority of the questions but nevertheless had Walz there for support. One point that received praise from liberals was her pointed dismissal of a question about Trump’s suggestion that she didn’t embrace being Black until adulthood. Calling attacks around race from Trump a tired « playbook, » she told Bash to move on to the next question. But conservative CNN commentator Scott Jennings said the Trump campaign should be « salivating » over one of the revelations from the interview, which appeared to be her embrace of so-called « Bidenomics. »HUCKABEE SANDERS BLASTS HARRIS FOR DOING JOINT INTERVIEW WITH WALZ: CAN’T DO IT ‘BY HERSELF’By doing the interview, Harris met the bar she set three weeks ago that she wanted to schedule one by the end of the month. Whether pressure will grow for her to do more, and also her first solo interview as a candidate, remains to be seen. »My fear is, because Bash wasn’t like, say, CBS’s Steve Kroft or NPR’s Steve Inskeep salivating at the sight of Barack Obama, the liberal media will claim this and the upcoming ABC debate are sufficient interview time for the campaign, » Houck said.Fox News Digital’s Paul Steinhauser contributed to this report.

Mother of Parkland school shooting victim pushes for bipartisan legislation after Georgia mass shooting

[ad_1]

The mother of a 14-year-old girl who was killed by a school shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on Feb. 14, 2018, is addressing the need for nationwide bipartisan legislation mandating silent panic alarms for educators in the wake of the Georgia school shooting.Lori Alhadeff, founder of the nonprofit organization Make Our Schools Safe, lost her daughter Alyssa Alhadeff on Valentine’s Day in 2018 when a lone gunman opened fire and killed 17 people.Since her daughter’s passing, she has advocated for the passing of Alyssa’s Law, named after her daughter, which requires public schools to be equipped with silent alarms that are directly connected to law enforcement.WHO IS THE ALLEGED GEORGIA SCHOOL SHOOTER? WHAT WE KNOW »It was the most horrific, horrible thing that any parent could have to go through to see their child murdered; shot, » Alhadeff told Fox News Digital during a video interview. »I can remember just taking my hands and trying to warm Alyssa because she was so cold and trying to bring her back to life. »Alhadeff said her daughter was not looking forward to the holiday as she was without a Valentine. To lift her spirits, she gifted Alyssa with a chocolate bar and a new pair of diamond earrings that morning before school. »She looked so beautiful, » Alhadeff said. »I told Alyssa I loved her and that would be the last time that I would see Alyssa alive. »WHAT IS CENTEGIX? THE SAFETY SOLUTION PANIC BUTTON USED TO NOTIFY POLICE OF GEORGIA SCHOOL SHOOTERAlhadeff, a former teacher, was first made aware of shots at her daughter’s school when she received text messages regarding the attack. »I immediately had this sense of loss that came over my body, » she said. « I knew that something was horribly wrong. »Alhadeff described her daughter as an « amazing, vivacious, incredible girl » and said that she had a zest for life, loved the beach and shopping with her friends. »She was just an incredible person, » Alhadeff said.On Sept. 4, 2024, at approximately 10:20 a.m., a 14-year-old lone gunman carried an « AR-platform style weapon » into Apalachee High School in Barrow County, Georgia, and opened fire, according to law enforcement.APALACHEE HIGH SCHOOL SHOOTING SUSPECT COLT GRAY AND FATHER APPEAR IN COURT FOR SEPARATE HEARINGSVictims of the deadly mass shooting included two students, Mason Schermerhorn, 14, and Christian Angulo, 14, and two teachers, Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irmie. »The protocols at this school and this system activated today prevented this from being a much larger tragedy than what we had here today, » GBI Director Chris Hosey told reporters during a press conference Wednesday.Apalachee High School educators are provided with identification badges from Centegix, a cloud-based wearable safety technology company. The panic buttons worn by teachers and staff discreetly enable school personnel to alert law enforcement of emergency situations. »I think it’s incredible that they had their wearable panic button, » Alhadeff said. « I know that when that panic button is pushed, that Alyssa is helping to save lives. »COLIN GRAY, FATHER OF GEORGIA HIGH SCHOOL SHOOTING SUSPECT CHARGED WITH MURDER, MANSLAUGHTER, CHILD CRUELTYAlhadeff is working tirelessly to both introduce and pass Alyssa’s Law into state law across the U.S. to deliver schools an extra layer of protection and improve response time from local law enforcement.Once a panic button is pressed by a teacher, Centegix technology mass communicates to the rest of the campus of an emergency state or threat when every second makes a difference. School personnel are encouraged to follow lockdown protocol, including barricading doors and hiding students and staff. No Wi-Fi or cell signal is required to alert all staff.Alyssa’s Law has been passed in Florida, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Tennessee, Utah and Oklahoma. The bill has been introduced in Nebraska, Arizona, Virginia, Oregon, Michigan, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Alabama and Georgia.Though the legislation is in progress in the Peach State, Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said during a press conference Wednesday that police were first alerted to the shooting when teachers used their panic buttons. »We’re optimistic that we will continue to pass Alyssa’s Law in Georgia and other states across the country, » Alhadeff said.Students who are looking to advocate for Alyssa’s Law in their state can sign up to initiate a M.O.S.S. club at their high school. Staff from Make Our Schools Safe are prepared to accommodate students to create a culture of safety within schools.Parents, former graduates and others who are passionate about enacting Alyssa’s Law in their state can send an email and become a M.O.S.S. volunteer.

Trump bashes NFL over major kickoff change: ‘Beginning of the end!’

[ad_1]

The drastic changes to the NFL’s kickoff caught the attention of former President Donald Trump on Friday, as he blasted the change in a post on Truth Social. « I can’t believe the NFL is effectively getting rid of the always exciting Kick Off Return. Such an exciting part of football. What are they doing? BEGINNING OF THE END! » Trump wrote. The NFL’s new kickoff rule has dramatically changed the function and aesthetic from what old-fashioned fans are used to, causing some confusion early in the season. The new rules have changed the alignment of both teams, while also incorporating various zones that play a key role in what players are allowed to do. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMNow, all kicking team players will have to line up with a foot on the receiving team’s 40-yard line, compared to when they had to line up all the way back at their own 35-yard line. The kicking team’s players must also wait until the ball hits the ground or the player is in the « landing zone » or end zone to start running. The « landing zone » is from the receiving team’s 20-yard line to the goal line. Meanwhile, the receiving team has a designated « setup zone » which is a five-yard area from the 35-yard line to the 30-yard line, where at least nine players must line up facing the kicking team. JETS’ AARON RODGERS HAS LOFTY EXPECTATIONS AHEAD OF RETURN TO GAME ACTION: ‘I EXPECT GREATNESS’There, at least seven of those nine players must have a foot on the 35-yard line. Those not on the 35-yard line will need to be in the setup zone outside the hash marks. Additionally, like the kicking team, the receiving team players cannot move until the kick has hit the ground or a player in the landing zone or the end zone. The purpose of the changes was to reduce the risk of injuries, as the kickoff has traditionally been the most dangerous play in football while also encouraging more returns. The previous rule involved players running at one another at high speeds from long distances, resulting in common high-speed collisions. Kickoff rules have been adjusted several times before in response to the high risk of injury from play. In 2011, the league moved kickoffs forward five yards to the 35-yard line, making it easier to kick the ball deep into the end zone and leading to more touchbacks with teams starting at the 20-yard line. In 2016, touchbacks placed teams at 25, which further encouraged them. Then last season, returners could call for a fair catch anywhere, not just in the end zone, for a touchback, resulting in the lowest return rate in NFL history. So, now the league is using this new rule to ensure safety while promoting returns. This new rule is inspired by the kickoff rules from the XFL – a now-defunct lower-budget competitor to the NFL. However, the XFL merged with the USFL to create the UFL this year, and that league ironically uses the traditional kickoff.Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Boeing Starliner undocks from space station, heads back to Earth unmanned as crew stays behind

[ad_1]

Boeing’s Starliner capsule undocked from the International Space Station Friday evening and headed back to New Mexico without any crew. Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams will remain behind at the space station until February. They are expected to return to Earth with a SpaceX crew that will likely launch for the ISS later this month with two empty seats on what NASA jokingly called an « orbital Uber » Friday. Sending the astronauts back on Starliner was determined to be too risky by NASA because the capsule has struggled with thruster troubles and helium leaks. Wilmore and Williams were originally expected to leave the ISS in June, just a week after launch, making an eight-day mission more than an eight-month ordeal. After thruster tests of the capsule, Boeing believed Williams and Wilmore could safely ride back in the capsule but was overridden by NASA. NASA ASTRONAUT SAYS STARLINER CREW LIKELY TO CHANGE EXERCISE ROUTINE DURING EXTENDED ISS STAYNASA reported Starliner had « good attitude and good control » shortly after the fully automated capsule left the space station « on a perfect trajectory » back to Earth. It is expected to land at the White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico about six hours after its undocking. « She’s on her way home, » Williams radioed after Starliner left the space station. NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Aleksandr Gorbunov, a Roscosmos cosmonaut, are expected to launch for the space station at the end of September on what was originally a four-person mission. NASA astronauts Zena Cardman and Stephanie Wilson were cut from the mission to make room for Williams and Wilmore to return home on the SpaceX capsule. The U.S. had previously relied on Russia to ferry astronauts to the ISS after the shuttle program was retired in 2011, a decision that came after the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated upon reentry in 2003, killing all seven astronauts. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPSpaceX began taking astronauts to the space station with its rockets in 2020 after both it and Boeing were contracted by NASA.

Simone Biles gets Bears gear after facing backlash from Chicago fans for Packers jacket

[ad_1]

Simone Biles learned the rules of the Packers-Bears rivalry the hard way last month when she wore a Green Bay jacket to a Bears preseason game against the Bengals. Now she’s making up for it. Biles only wore the Packers jacket because she was there to support her husband, new Bears safety Jonathan Owens, who played for Green Bay last season. The jacket was a custom design with photos of Owens playing for the Packers. But the hardcore Bears fans didn’t care, and they didn’t relent. The Olympic gymnast was bombarded with posts from angry Bears fans that she wore the gear of their rival in their home stadium while supporting a Bears player. The angry posts must have worked. On Friday, Biles said she had purchased more Bears gear in the aftermath of the controversy. « Yes, I have plenty [of Bears gear] now, » she said while leaving the Global Summit on Women’s Mental Health, according to TMZ Sports. « So, don’t you worry, guys! »CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMBiles initially seemed to double down on the choice of a Packers jacket after the initial backlash. Just days after she was originally seen wearing it, Biles posted a photo on X of her wearing the jacket standing next to Owens with the caption « Bear Down. » Owens then shared his wife’s post to his Instagram stories and commented on her post with two hearts, one blue and one orange. Owens signed a two-year deal with the Bears in March after a career season in Green Bay. Owens scored his first career touchdown and started 11 games for the Packers on defense last year, while helping lead the team to the playoffs and making his first postseason appearance. In the playoffs, Owens started both games in a win against the Dallas Cowboys and a close loss to the San Francisco 49ers, making seven tackles.TOP 10 MOMENTS FROM THE 2024 PARIS OLYMPICS, INCLUDING SIMONE BILES EARNING GOAT STATUSOwens is on the third team of his career and is looking to help lead a Bears turnaround after the team failed to make the playoffs the last two seasons. Biles was there to support Owens at several Packers games last year, including the playoffs, and is expected to attend plenty of Bears games this year. Now that she has her Chicago gear, the Bears fans will have plenty of reasons to cheer her on whenever she is shown on the jumbotron at Solider Field.Biles won three gold medals at the Paris Olympics this summer, becoming the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic history. She did it all while being one of the oldest competitors in Olympics gymnastics history at 27. Her gold medals marked the completion of a dramatic comeback story for Biles, after she withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 due to a case of the twisties. « Man, I’m super proud. Just because I see the work that she put in, and I saw what she went through, » Owens told Fox News Digital in July. « And just for her to be able to come back, no fear, continue to dominate the way that she has, man, is just amazing. »It’s a testament to the person that she is and her confidence and training to the work that she puts in. I can’t wait to keep watching her dreams come true. »Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Denver, a sanctuary city, is considering proposal to house migrants in elementary school: mayor’s office

[ad_1]

Fox News confirmed Friday that a vacant elementary school building in Denver, Colorado, may be turned into a migrant shelter.

A spokesperson for Democratic Mayor Mike Johnston said the building has been « identified as a potential migrant shelter, but nothing is final and there’s no paperwork, » adding the city has been « looking for buildings that would be suited as an emergency shelter. »

A spokesperson for Denver Public Schools, which owns the vacant building, told Fox News, « No determination has been made yet. »

ICE CONFIRMS AURORA, COLORADO GANG MEMBERS ARE IN THE UNITED STATES ILLEGALLY, RELEASED BY BIDEN ADMIN

Denver is a sanctuary city, meaning it does not enforce immigration law, nor does the city cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. »The location you reference has been looked at as a possible site to provide temporary shelter for newcomers, » Jon Ewing, a spokesperson for the Denver mayor’s office, clarified to Fox News. « No decisions have been made, nor contracts signed. »It’s also probably worth pointing out that very few newcomers are in shelter at this time. In all of August, we saw around 150 people come through our shelter system, many of whom stayed for only a matter of hours before departing for other locations. »GOP lawmakers have sounded the alarm on sanctuary city and open border policies in light of transnational gang activity in Colorado. The Tren de Aragua gang has been involved in apartment takeovers in Aurora, as seen in viral surveillance video that surfaced last week.

« The situation in Aurora, Colorado, is just the tip of the iceberg of the problems that come with the Biden-Harris administration’s open border policies. While gangs overrun our cities, Gov. Polis and Mayor Coffman are complicit in the violence unfolding there that is putting Americans in danger, » Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna told Fox News Digital.

« These criminals are reportedly involved in human trafficking and sexual abuse of minors. We must quickly put an end to the wave of illegal aliens pouring into our country and ensure that justice is served for the victims of these monstrous acts. »VENEZUELAN GANG’S ALLEGED TAKEOVER OF AURORA, COLORADO APARTMENTS BEGAN IN 2023: REPORT

Four Venezuelan nationals confirmed to be involved with Tren de Aragua were arrested in Aurora in a shooting outside one of the overtaken apartment buildings July 28.

In a letter shared with the Daily Caller News Foundation, GOP lawmakers wrote, « The Biden-Harris Administration’s open border policies coupled with the state of Colorado’s sanctuary policies and the city of Denver’s sanctuary city status have fueled and exasperated the immigration crisis in Colorado. »

The GOP lawmakers who penned the letter include Rep. Chip Roy of Texas and Lauren Boebert, Doug Lamborn and Greg Lopez of Colorado. »Multiple local elected officials and the nonpartisan Perkins Coie law firm that was hired to investigate the takeover have confirmed numerous criminal acts committed by TdA gang members including threats of murder, robbery, extortion, trespassing, assaults and battery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, drug related crimes, stolen vehicles, human trafficking and sexual abuse of minors, » the letter continued.

« Non sanctuary cities and neighboring communities have suffered harm from these policies and don’t have the resources or authorities to mitigate the influx of illegal aliens and TdA gang members. »Aurora City Council Member Danielle Jurinsky told Fox News Digital, « Denver’s sanctuary policies and their approach to handling this migrant crisis is further exacerbating the problem and continuing to put American kids last. »

Trump accepts largest police union endorsement, blasts Harris as a ‘defunder’: ‘Kamala’s crime wave’

[ad_1]

The nation’s oldest and largest police organization endorsed Donald Trump Friday, saying there is « zero doubt » they want him in the White House for a second term, while the former president blasted his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, as a « defunder » of law enforcement, and vowed to end « Kamala’s crime wave » if elected. Trump traveled to North Carolina Friday to speak at a meeting of the Fraternal Order of Police and accept their endorsement, calling it an « honor. » The organization also endorsed Trump in 2016 and 2020. « Public safety and border security will be important issues in the last months of this campaign, » FOP National President Patrick Yoes said. « Our members carefully considered the positions of the candidates on the issues and there was no doubt—zero doubt—as to who they want as our President for the next four years: Donald J. Trump. »TRUMP ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT: FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE BLASTS SECRET SERVICE ‘FAILURE’Yoes said that during Trump’s first term, he « made it clear he supported law enforcement and border security. » »In the summer of 2020, he stood with us when very few would. With his help, we defeated the ‘defund the police’ movement and, finally, we are seeing crime rates decrease, » he said. « If we want to maintain these lower crime rates, we must re-elect Donald Trump. » Yoes said FOP leadership met with Trump—but said a similar meeting was not offered by Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign. FLASHBACK: HARRIS TRIED TO DEFUND BORDER PATROL AGENTS, SLASH ICE BUDGET »As the nation’s oldest and largest law enforcement labor organization, the FOP’s presidential endorsement is one of the most sought-after endorsements by candidates running for the presidency, » Yoes said. « The FOP is the number one voice of America’s law enforcement. We have a responsibility to our members, to the 800,000 sworn law enforcement officers in the United States, and to the communities they serve to do our part in determining the direction in which our country will head. »Yoes said Trump, during his first term, « provided our nation with strong, effective leadership. » « Now that he is seeking election to a second term, we intend to help him win it, » Yoes said. Trump touted the endorsement Friday afternoon during an event with members of the Fraternal Order of Police. « It’s an honor to be here. This is a big endorsement for me…It’s an honor, » Trump said. « I’m thrilled to be back with the incredible heroes and patriots of the Fraternal Order of Police, an incredible group and a group that’s highly respected all over the country. »KAMALA HARRIS SUPPORTED ‘DEFUND THE POLICE’ IN 2020 RADIO INTERVIEW, BEFORE BIDEN CAMPAIGN SAID OTHERWISETrump added: « To all of the law enforcement men and women here today, I respect you so much. I admire you, and as your president, I will always back the blue as I did. » Trump blasted his opponent Vice President Kamala Harris as a « defunder. » « I back to blue more than any other. I was not a defunder like Kamala. She was a defunder. She was a ten year defunder. When you, when you want to defend for ten years, that’s the end of that one, » Trump said.He joked: « I think I could leave right now, and you say there’s no way that we’re not voting for that guy. » « I consider you in this room to be America’s finest, » Trump said. « You’re all over the country, all over from the country, all over the place. And, we really appreciate you being here. » Trump said law enforcement officers just want to « see our country, be safe and prosperous, and we want to love our country. » KAMALA HARRIS CALLED FOR REMOVING COPS FROM SCHOOLS TO FIGHT RACIAL ‘INEQUITIES’ IN 2019 INTERVIEW »We know all about you and the great job that you do. And, the people of this country respect you greatly for it. So I just want to thank you on behalf of everybody, » Trump said. « Under the Harris regime, 99% of law abiding citizens suffer while criminals run free and our country is plagued into literally third world conditions. In many ways, we’re a third world country, but we’re going to clean that up real fast, » Trump said. « I’m here today to declare that we do not have to live this way. And when I’m President of the United States, we are not going to take it anymore. » Trump said that there has been a 43% increase in violent crime since the Biden-Harris administration came into power, including a 58% increase in rape and an 89% increase in aggravated assault. « And under Comrade Kamala, assaults on police officers are up a minimum of 32% and many of them are not reported. And if they are reported, they’re not taken down. And shootings of our police officers are up by over 16%, » Trump said. « The day I take office is the day that Kamala’s crime wave comes to an end. It’s a crime wave in our country. We’ve never seen anything like it. »

ANDREW McCARTHY: Anti-Trump judge stumbles into the right decision in delaying sentencing

[ad_1]

In postponing former President Donald Trump’s sentencing until after the 2024 election, Judge Juan Merchan did the right thing for the wrong reasons. This is apparent from his setting of a sentencing day on Nov. 26, even though – according to the four-page letter to counsel he made public today – Merchan is delaying his ruling on Trump’s immunity claim until Nov. 12.To my mind, Trump is correct that proceeding with the scheduled Sept. 18 sentencing would have been gratuitous interference in the 2024 election. There was no rule-of-law reason why Trump, a major-party nominee, needed to be sentenced in the stretch run of the presidential campaign. And note that, until today’s postponement, Judge Merchan seemed insistent on sentencing Trump just as early voting begins (on September 16) in Pennsylvania, the most pivotal of the battleground states.JUDGE MERCHAN DELAYS TRUMP SENTENCING UNTIL AFTER ELECTIONWhile Trump has been found guilty of 34 felony charges, the business-records offense is a non-violent crime that is normally a misdemeanor in New York (and normally not charged at all by Manhattan’s paragon progressive prosecutor, Alvin Bragg). And while 34 counts sounds impressive, the number is high only because Bragg unethically parsed what should have been no more than a handful of counts by charging each scrap of paper as a separate four-year felony – aggregating to 136 years of potential imprisonment! This was done to make Trump look like a career criminal. But the offense at issue is comparatively trivial, given that, along with Trump’s lack of a criminal record, he was clearly going to get bail pending appeal regardless of what sentence was imposed. That appeal could take years to resolve, and it is probable (in my view) that the guilty verdicts will be reversed on appeal – if they are not vacated even earlier (more on that momentarily). Hence, there should have been no rush to impose sentence prior to the election. In his letter, Merchan’s preciously protests that he is « fair, impartial and apolitical. » To the contrary, he is a partisan Democrat who, as Hugh Hewitt has observed, contributed to Biden’s 2020 campaign against Trump in violation of judicial ethics laws, and whose daughter is a progressive political operative, working for Kamala Harris, among other zealously anti-Trump Democrats. For a truly apolitical judge, sentencing on Sept. 18 would have been inconceivable. The only rational reason to insist on it would be to enable Harris to label Trump « a convicted felon facing a prison sentence » in the run-up to Election Day.All that said, though, the legal basis for the postponement should not have been the imminence of the election. It should have been the incontestable fact that, due to Bragg’s recklessness and Merchan’s indulgence of it, there is now a profound immunity issue in the case. Over Trump’s objection, and despite the fact that the Supreme Court was simultaneously giving serious consideration to presidential immunity, Merchan permitted Bragg’s prosecutors to introduce evidence of Trump’s official presidential acts – including the testimony of two Trump White House staffers, described as « devastating » by prosecutors in their jury summation.A month after the trial, in its immunity ruling (Trump v. United States), not only did the Supreme Court hold that presidents are immune from prosecution for official acts; the Court added that such acts may not be admitted as evidence in a criminal trial. Consequently, the contested evidence should have been precluded. What’s more, immunity is among the few issues in the criminal law as to which a defendant is entitled to an immediate appeal – particularly a former president facing potential criminalization of his official acts. This is because, unlike other trial errors, immunity relates to whether it is (or was) proper to have a trial in the first place. Immunity questions, then, should be decided before the immune defendant is subjected to further proceedings. That is why the postponement should have been an easy call for Merchan. This still seems lost on him, though. In his letter, Merchan incoherently claims that there would be no need to delay the sentencing now if his original sentencing date of July 11 had held. But that date couldn’t have held. The Supreme Court’s immunity decision was issued on July 1. It was this immunity ruling, not the 2024 election, that necessitated the delay.CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINIONMerchan also notes that even Bragg did not object to Trump’s postponement motion (in fact, he construes Bragg as having joined Trump’s motion). But the judge seems impervious to the fact that the DA took this position because Trump would be entitled to appeal if Merchan rules against him on immunity. Delay was unavoidable. Finally, Merchan previously said he’d issue his immunity ruling on Sept. 16. Having now postponed the sentence to Nov. 26, however, Merchan somehow decided to postpone the immunity ruling until Nov. 12. That makes no sense. If Merchan rules against Trump on Nov. 12 (as I expect he will, given the one-sided record in this case), Trump will appeal and forcefully argue that he should not be sentenced until that appeal runs its course – through New York’s appellate courts and potentially up to the U.S. Supreme Court. Obviously, there is no way that is going to happen prior to Nov. 26.If, as he’d told the parties, Merchan was prepared to rule on Trump’s immunity claim on Sept. 16, he ought to do that. Even on such a schedule, there is no way the appellate process his ruling will trigger could be resolved in time for a Nov. 26 sentencing – and even Merchan concedes that sentencing may not happen at all if he construes the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling to require vacating the guilty verdicts. (Don’t bet the ranch on that.)In any event, a postponement of the Sept. 26 sentencing should have been a no-brainer. Merchan finally came around to it, but awkwardly. I don’t know if Trump will win the election, but I seriously doubt he will have to cancel his Thanksgiving plans over a Nov. 26 sentencing.CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM ANDREW McCARTHY

Netanyahu says security in Gaza is critical to stop Hamas smuggling hostages into Iran: ‘lost forever’

[ad_1]

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is making clear that his forces will not agree to Hamas’ demands to vacate Gaza, for two crucial reasons – overall national security and ensuring the safe return of the remaining hostages still in Hamas captivity. Concerns continue to mount that Hamas could look to smuggle some of the remaining 97 Israeli hostages still in captivity into the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, which has long been deemed a haven for Islamic militant groups, and where they could then be transported to Yemen or Iran.According to Netanyahu, the best way to prevent these Hamas hostage smuggling efforts is through maintaining the contested Philadelphi Route – a security corridor that runs between the Gaza Strip and Egypt.AMERICAN KILLED IN WEST BANK, STATE DEPARTMENT SAYS »Hol[d] the Philadelphi corridor, because that possesses Hamas, that prevents them from rearming, » Netanhyu told Fox and Friends’ Brian Kilmeade. « It prevents Gaza from becoming this Iranian terror enclave again, which can threaten our existence. « But it’s also the way to prevent them from smuggling hostages . . . into Egypt, into the Sinai, where they could disappear, » he added. « Then they’ll end up in Iran or in Yemen, and they’re lost forever. »The prime minster’s comments echoed a report by The Jewish Chronicle that said Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar was hashing out a secret plan to smuggle himself, other Hamas leadership and some of the remaining Israeli hostages out of Gaza through the Philadelphi corridor before heading to Iran. The chronicle cited Israeli intelligence sources, though other Israeli news outlets refuted the reporting Thursday, and Fox News Digital could not independently verify the intelligence. In his remarks to Fox News, Netanyahu did not expand on the leverage Hamas could gain by smuggling the hostages out of Gaza, but securing the hostages’ release has increasingly taken center stage in the ceasefire negotiations.Following the assassination of six Israeli hostages who had been held prisoner by Hamas since the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks, and who were found in the tunnels mined by the terrorist organization last month, Netanyahu has increased his opposition to U.S. efforts to push through a cease-fire agreement. NETANYAHU HITS BACK OVER GLOBAL PRESSURE TO MAKE CEASE-FIRE CONCESSIONS, SAYS DEMANDS ARE ‘IMMORAL’, ‘INSANE’Three of the hostages killed were reportedly supposed to be part of an exchange under a cease-fire deal proposed in July, but which never came to fruition. « We’re doing everything we can to get the remainder [out], » Netanhyu said. « But Hamas consistently refuses to make a deal. »Details of the ceasefire agreement put forward by the U.S., Qatar and Egypt have remained closely guarded for months, and reporting for weeks has suggested that the most recent deal signed on by Israel, but rebuffed by Hamas, was down to Jerusalem’s refusal to vacate the Philadelphi Route. « It’s just a direct falsehood, » he said, noting that it is about more than just holding onto the corridor. »What we have to do is to make sure that we do two things, » Netanyahu said. « One, get the hostages out. And second, keep the red lines that are necessary for Israel’s security and survival. « I think both of them go through holding the Philadelphi corridor, » he added. Despite Netanyahu’s strong opposition to ceding any hold of the strategic route and Hamas’ apparent refusal to hand over more hostages until Israel stops its operations in Gaza, Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Thursday said that negotiations were making significant headway. « I think based on what I’ve seen, 90 percent is agreed, but there are a few critical issues that remain where we need to be able to get agreement, » he told reporters. « Much of this has been discussed in recent days, including the Philadelphi corridor, including some of the exact specifics of how hostages and prisoners are exchanged.  « So that remains, but pretty much everything else is there, » he added. Blinken said he expects in the « coming days » that an updated deal will be shared by Egypt and Qatar with Hamas and by the U.S. with Israel in an attempt to shore up a cease-fire agreement. « Then it will be time really for the parties to decide yes or no, and then we’ll see, » he added.

NFL debut in Brazil marred by concerns over safety, streaming, social media ban and the color green

[ad_1]

As the NFL prepares to host its first-ever game in South America on Friday, concerns over player safety have been a prominent part of the discussion. The Philadelphia Eagles will play host to the Green Bay Packers at Neo Quimica arena in São Paulo, Brazil on Friday with kickoff slated for 8:15 p.m. ET, marking the NFL’s first international game of the season, and it’s first-ever in South America. The game, which will be exclusively streamed on Peacock, marks the league’s first Friday game during opening weekend since 1970. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMAnd while the hype around the match up continues to build, there are several complaints outside of the game’s location that have been raised. Earlier this summer, Packers running back Josh Jacobs claimed that the two teams were told not to wear the color green due to « gangs » in the region – an obvious issue for Packers and Eagles fans. « The part of Brazil that we’re going to, you can’t even wear green. They said, I guess, something to do with the gangs and stuff, » Jacobs revealed on Chris Long’s podcast back in June. While the color green is an issue at Neo Quimica arena, it’s not because of any gang activity. The Brazilian soccer club, the Corinthians, reportedly asked the Eagles – the host team – to avoid wearing the color in their stadium because of its affiliation with local rival club Palmeiras. A Corinthians official told The Associated Press on Sunday that the move came after a request by its president, who claimed that green was only allowed for visiting teams. SECURITY RAMPS UP FOR EAGLES-PACKERS BRAZIL GAME AFTER PLAYERS VOICE SAFETY CONCERNSThe Eagles will instead opt for black helmets, white jerseys and black pants, while the Packers will dress in their traditional white, yellow and green jerseys. How fans choose to show up is a different story. The biggest concern leading up to Friday’s game has been safety for the players and teams. Eagles cornerback Darius Slay said on his podcast this week that he was not looking forward to the trip, adding that he had specifically told his family not to make the trip to Brazil to see him play. « Week 1, I’ve been looking forward to it. I can’t wait. But, man, I do not want to go to Brazil, » he began. « And you wanna know why? I’m here to tell you why. They already told us not to leave the hotel. They told us we can’t do too much going on, because the crime rate is crazy. »He later apologized for the remarks, but he wasn’t the only player to share their thoughts. Packers cornerback Eric Stokes said he had been told not to leave the hotel while he was in Brazil. Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown said they had been given a list of « don’t do’s, » adding « I’m just trying to go down there and win a football game and come back home. That’s the best way I can put it. »DeVonta Smith simply said, « No comment, » when he was asked. EAGLES STAR SAYS HE TOLD FAMILY NOT TO COME TO BRAZIL AMID SAFETY CONCERNS: ‘THE CRIME RATE IS CRAZY’But the local government is stepping up to avoid any trouble. São Paulo state’s government said it will deploy hundreds of police officers and provide escorts for team buses, and trained dogs will be deployed to the stadium to detect potential explosive devices. Helicopters and drones will also be used as an extra security measure during the game. Your favorite NFL reporters will have to use a different social media platform to report on Friday’s game after a Brazilian Supreme Court recently banned Elon Musk’s X over his failure to name a legal representative in Brazil amid a monthslong feud with the justice over free speech and misinformation claims.Reporters have said their goodbyes on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, and have instead turned to other platforms like Facebook and Instagram Threads as an alternative. Anyone willing to risk bypassing the ban using VPNs risks a fine of around $9,000 per day. SUBSCRIBE, OR MISS OUTIn the era of streaming, fans will, unfortunately, have just one way to view Friday’s game. It will be streamed exclusively on Peacock, meaning that outside their respective markets, anyone without a subscription will have to sign up with plans starting at $7.99 a month. The Associated Press contributed to this report. Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

House tees up ‘China Week’ with floor votes aimed at combatting CCP espionage and economic advances

[ad_1]

After six weeks of recess, the House is set to fast-track approval of a slew of China-related bills that aim to counter the U.S.’s growing foe beginning on Monday. With only three weeks of work on Capitol Hill before the November election, the Republican-led lower chamber is dedicating precious floor time to bills that would root out Chinese spyware within the country and set up the next president to take tougher action against Beijing. « We wanted to combine them all into one week so that you had a real sharp focus on the fact that we need to be aggressive in confronting the threat that China poses, » Majority Leader Steve Scalise told Fox News Digital about the planned « China Week. » »I think we can get real bipartisan support for a number of these, » the Louisiana Republican said. « They’re all bills that should be very bipartisan, because there are things that China is doing right now that are direct threats to our country’s national security, and if we get strong bipartisan votes, you have a higher chance of getting through the Senate. »HOUSE GOP PRESSES HOCHUL ON ALLEGED CCP AGENT’S INFLUENCE IN NY Scalise said that four bills will come up under a rule, meaning that they will be debated by the House and that members can offer amendments. Still more will come up under suspension of the rules, meaning that the House is aiming to pass them quickly and without debate. Scalise highlighted one bill that would undo the Biden administration’s guidance allowing Chinese-made electric vehicles to qualify for a $7,500 tax credit. The move enraged even West Virginia’s Democrat-turned-Independent Sen. Joe Manchin, who helped author the Inflation Reduction Act that allowed for the credit. The End Chinese Dominance of Electric Vehicles Act, introduced by Rep. Carol Miller, R-W.Va., would tighten the Foreign Entity of Concern (FEOC) definition of a 30D EV that qualifies for the credit to exclude those vehicles with significant parts that are made in China. Another bill would broadly ban China from purchasing U.S. farmland. Chinese entities owned about 380,000 acres of agricultural land in the U.S. as of 2023, or less than 1%. HONG KONG LAWMAKERS UNANIMOUSLY PASS CONTROVERSIAL SECURITY LAW, GRANTING GOVERNMENT POWER TO CURB DISSENTAnother bill, the No WHO Pandemic Preparedness Treaty Without Senate Approval Act, would prevent the U.S. from agreeing to any pandemic preparedness agreement negotiated by the World Health Organization (WHO) without the approval of two-thirds of the Senate. « We’re giving an extra buffer so that the administration can’t just go partner up with WHO and come up with an agreement that would result in really bad policy for America, » Scalise said. Another bill, the Biosecure Act, would ban federal agencies that run research labs from using any biotech equipment from any company that could be at risk of harnessing data to send back to the CCP.TIM WALZ SPENT YEARS PROMOTING RESEARCH FACILITY THAT COLLABORATED WITH ‘CHINESE MILITARY COMPANY’Another, the DHS Restrictions on Confucius Institutes and Chinese Entities of Concern Act, would prevent any federal money from going to universities involved with CCP-run Confucius Institutes. « You’re seeing China get more involved in our higher ed institutions, » said Scalise. During former President Donald Trump’s administration in 2018, Congress « restricted federal funding to schools with institutes; nearly all of the institutes have since closed, » according to Congress’s Government Accountability Office (GAO).Another piece of legislation would re-establish a task force formed under Trump within the Department of Justice specifically focused on Chinese espionage. FBI Director Christopher Wray estimated last year his agency has more than 2,000 active investigations related to Chinese spying. The FBI estimates that Chinese counterfeit goods, pirated software and theft of trade secrets have cost the U.S. economy between $225 billion and $600 billion.

Kenya school dormitory fire kills 17 students, seriously burns 13, death toll may rise

[ad_1]

A fire in a school dormitory in Kenya killed 17 students and seriously burned 13 others, police said Friday, and they feared the death toll may rise. The cause of the fire Thursday night at Hillside Endarasha Primary school in Nyeri County was being investigated, police spokesperson Resila Onyango said. The school serves children up to the age of 14.Nyeri County Commissioner Pius Murugu and the education ministry reported that the dormitory that caught fire housed more than 150 boys between age 10 and 14. Since most of the buildings are built with wooden planks, the fire spread quickly.UGANDAN OLYMPIC RUNNER DIES AFTER BEING SET ON FIRE BY BOYFRIEND, OFFICIALS SAYThe private school, which has 824 students, is located in the country’s central highlands, 125 miles north of the capital, Nairobi, where wooden structures are common.Nyeri County Gov. Mutahi Kahiga told journalists that rescue efforts were hampered by muddy roads caused by rains in the area.Anxious parents who had been unable to find their children among the survivors waited at the school, engulfed with grief.John Rukwaro told journalists that his 11-year-old grandson was missing and he had checked with area hospitals without success. The education ministry’s permanent secretary, Belio Kipsang, said the government was working with the school administration to account for all the children in the boarding section. »We are asking the parents who picked up their children and the community to support us as we consolidate the numbers to ensure that we account for every child who was boarding in this school, » he said.President William Ruto called the news « devastating. » »I instruct relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate this horrific incident. Those responsible will be held to account, » he wrote on the social media platform X.His deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, urged school administrators to ensure that safety guidelines recommended by the education ministry for boarding schools are being followed.School fires are common in Kenyan boarding schools, often due to arson fueled by drug abuse and overcrowding, according to a recent education ministry report. Many students stay at school because parents believe it gives them more time to study without long commutes. Some fires have been started by students during protests over the workload or living conditions. In 2017, 10 high school students died in a school fire started by a student in Nairobi. The deadliest school fire in the country in recent history was in 2001 when 67 students died in a dormitory fire in Machakos county. The education ministry’s guidelines recommend that dormitories should be spacious enough and have two doors on each end, an emergency door in the middle and that windows are not fitted with grills to allow for escape in case of fire. Fully serviced fire extinguishers and fire alarms are required at easily accessible spots. It was not immediately clear if these guidelines were followed at Hillside school and the area near the dormitory has remained cordoned off.
