White House reporters ask zero questions about Hurricane Helene in surprise opportunity to press Biden

[ad_1]

Reporters had a unique opportunity to question President Biden when he made a surprise appearance at the White House press briefing on Friday, but didn’t ask about the historic disaster unfolding in the Southeast in the wake of Hurricane Helene. It was the first time that Biden appeared at a White House press briefing since taking office. The president spoke briefly about the suspended port workers strike and Friday’s positive jobs numbers, and he announced that he may request additional money from Congress to fund Hurricane Helene relief efforts. But there was no follow-up from the press on hurricane relief. After thanking the president for his presence, the first reporter asked about Republicans casting doubt on his economic numbers, saying, « Florida Sen. Marco Rubio described today’s jobs report as having fake numbers. What do you make of that? And how worried are you that many Americans are hearing that the jobs numbers aren’t real? »TRUMP TARGETS BIDEN, HARRIS OVER FEDERAL RESPONSE TO HURRICANE: ‘INCOMPETENTLY MANAGED’The crisis in the Middle East was the biggest topic, with questions about Biden’s comments about strikes on Iranian oil facilities, Israeli plans to retaliate, possible U.S. sanctions, and worries about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu trying to influence the U.S. election.Election security and the peaceful transfer of power were also top of mind for reporters. »The election is a month away. One, I’d like to know how you’re feeling about how this election is going. And then also, do you have confidence that it will be a free and fair election and that it will be peaceful? » one reporter asked. « Are you making any preparations, getting security briefings related to domestic security? »The only mention of Hurricane Helene, with a death toll topping 230, was in a question about Vice President Kamala Harris’ role in the administration. »There have obviously been a number of crises that the country has been facing over the past several days with the hurricane, with the port strike, with the situation in the Middle East. Can you talk about how your vice president, who is running for the presidency, has worked on these crises and what role she has played over the past several days? » a reporter asked.BIDEN GETS DEFENSIVE WHEN PUSHED ON WHO’S ‘COMMANDING’ HURRICANE HELENE RESPONSEThe Biden-Harris administration has come under fire from former President Trump for the federal response to the devastation left by Helene, already one of the deadliest hurricanes this century. The White House has pushed back hard against these criticisms, emphasizing that Biden has coordinated the federal response, including approving emergency declarations and deploying 1,000 active-duty soldiers to support search-and-rescue efforts. More than 4,800 personnel from FEMA and other agencies have been deployed to North Carolina and neighboring states impacted by Helene. Additionally, FEMA has shipped over 8.5 million meals, more than 7 million liters of water, 150 generators and over 220,000 tarps to aid response efforts, according to the White House. As of Friday, the federal government has provided more than $45 million in Individual assistance to survivors affected by the storm, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, including in the form of one-time $750 payments from FEMA to qualified applicants in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. While Biden ended his own press conference dry spell, Harris has not held a formal news conference since emerging as the Democratic nominee when Biden dropped out in July.

Davante Adams posts cryptic message of famed American poet amid trade speculation

[ad_1]

Davante Adams may have just told everyone his next destination. The Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver has reportedly requested a trade from the team amid their quarterback issues and struggles.Reports have surfaced that he wants to be reunited with either Aaron Rodgers or Derek Carr, but if his Instagram Story is any message, those reports were wrong.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMOn Friday afternoon, Adams posted a still photo of poet Edgar Allan Poe.Poe, of course, is most notable for his poem « The Raven. » Poe was a Baltimore native, and the Ravens got their team name from the writing.Later on, he posted a quote attributed to the poet that read, « Believe nothing you hear and half of what you see. »The 31-year-old receiver was rumored to be traded last season as the Raiders struggled under former head coach Josh McDaniels, and the Jets were on the list then with Rodgers, his former quarterback with the Green Bay Packers, on the roster. While the Raiders balked on real trade talks for Adams last season, they have reportedly told teams they would « consider » Adams if a second-round pick were involved in a package, as well as additional compensation, according to ESPN.CHIEFS PLACE RASHEE RICE ON INJURED RESERVE; SEVERITY OF KNEE INJURY STILL UNKNOWNAnd this comes after Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce was spotted liking an Instagram post suggesting that Adams has played his final game with Las Vegas. Adams wasn’t available for the Raiders this past Sunday in the win over the Cleveland Browns, as he is considered week-to-week with a hamstring injury. He’s been declared out this week, as well.As the Raiders employ Gardner Minshew at quarterback this season after a carousel in 2023, which included Jimmy Garoppolo and Aidan O’Connell, Adams has 18 receptions for 209 yards and a touchdown through three games. Fox News’ Scott Thompson contributed to this report.Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Mets play broadcaster’s viral call of Pete Alonso’s home run on plane, give him standing ovation

[ad_1]

The New York Mets are widely regarded as having the best announcers in the sport, and Thursday night offered an example why.Howie Rose, who has been calling Mets games since 1995 and grew up a fan of the team, was on the call on 880 AM in New York, and both Rose and Pete Alonso delivered in the huge moment.Trailing 2-0 and two outs away from elimination, Alonso blasted a three-run home run to give New York a 3-2 lead. They eventually won, 4-2, to advance past the Milwaukee Brewers into the divisional round.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMIf the Mets wind up winning it all, Rose’s call will surely be on the highlight video. »It’s gone! He did it! He did it! Pete Alonso with the most memorable home run of his career! » Rose exclaimed as the ball trickled over the fence. « Pete Alonso keeps this fairy-tale season going with the fairy-tale swing of his career! 3-2 New York! »Rose and the Mets are headed to Philadelphia for the NLDS against the Phillies after the champagne showers. While on the plane, though, with Rose sitting near the front and the rest of the team several rows back, someone played the call on the plane’s speakers.Rose was shy at first, even covering his ears, but Mets players gave him a standing ovation. The broadcaster turned around, pointed at Alonso and saluted, and the two shared a huge embrace.PETE ALONSO SENDS NEW YORK METS TO NLDS WITH DRAMATIC NINTH-INNING HOMERRose was inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame along with TV broadcaster Gary Cohen last year. Thursday night’s home run call automatically goes into Rose’s Mt. Rushmore of calls. Rose was also behind the mic for Mike Piazza’s home run in the Mets’ first home game after 9/11 and Stéphane Matteau’s goal in 1994 to send the New York Rangers to the Stanley Cup Final. The miraculous victory is déjà vu for the Mets. It came just three days after the Mets fought back from down 3-0 in the eighth and 7-6 in the ninth against the Atlanta Braves to clinch a postseason spot in their first game of a doubleheader.Everything looked like it was down the drain for the Mets, who, after pulling Jose Quintana following six scoreless innings, allowed back-to-back homers to start the seventh inning. Alonso’s blast was the first ever by a Met while trailing in the 9th inning or later of a winner-take-all postseason game, according to OPTA Stats. This marks the first time the Mets and Phillies will play each other in the postseason. The first pitch is scheduled for Saturday at 4:08 p.m. ET.Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Blackface photo shakes up toss-up House district in NY

[ad_1]

A close House race in New York was rocked by an October surprise when photos surfaced of the incumbent Republican congressman in blackface as part of a Halloween costume years ago.Rep. Michael Lawler, R-N.Y., who is white, is pictured dressed like pop sensation Michael Jackson, complete with bronzer to darken his face in an October 2006 photo reported by the New York Times. Lawler does not dispute the photo’s authenticity and has issued an apology to anyone who has taken offense, though he said it was not his intention to dress in blackface. »As has been well-documented – most recently by the Daily Beast – I was a so-called ‘Super Fan’ of Michael Jackson, so much so that I was mentioned by name in his biography for my outspoken support of him and the Jackson Family.  I loved Michael’s music, was awed by him as a performer, and by his impact on pop culture, » Lawler said in a statement. « One of my greatest memories is attending his concert at Madison Square Garden before his untimely death.  « When attempting to imitate Michael’s legendary dance moves at a college Halloween party eighteen years ago, the ugly practice of black face was the furthest thing from my mind. Let me be clear, this is not that. Rather, my costume was intended as the sincerest form of flattery, a genuine homage to one of my childhood idols since I was a little kid trying to moonwalk through my mom’s kitchen.  FOX NEWS POWER RANKINGS: HARRIS TICKS UP AND SENATE REPUBLICANS TAKE CHARGE »I am a student of history and for anyone who takes offense to the photo, I am sorry.  All you can do is live and learn, and I appreciate everyone’s grace along the way, » he said. The 38-year-old Lawler, a moderate first-term lawmaker from the Hudson Valley, is seen as a rising star in the GOP conference who is running for re-election in a suburban swing district. His Democratic opponent in New York’s 17th Congressional District is former Rep. Mondaire Jones, a Black man. The Jones campaign did not respond to a request for comment. The race is one of 22 toss-up contests that may well determine which party controls the House of Representatives next year, according to Fox News’ Power Rankings.  Lawler is not the first politician to be wrapped up in recent controversy over a costume that resembled blackface. Former Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, a Democrat, faced calls to resign after a photo from his medical school yearbook surfaced which pictured men in Ku Klux Klan robes and blackface. Northam denied he was in the photo but admitted he once used shoe polish to darken his face for a dance contest in the 1980s in which he too dressed like Jackson.NEW YORK REPUBLICAN WRANGLES WITH CNN HOST HITTING TRUMP’S ECONOMIC POLICIESCanadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also faced controversy in 2019 when photos surfaced of him wearing blackface in 2001. The prime minister said in an interview after the fact that he could not give a definitive number on how many times he had worn blackface. Lawler was photographed in his Jackson costume in New York City when he was a sophomore at Manhattan College, now Manhattan University, a Catholic school in the Bronx where only three percent of the student population is Black, according to the New York Times. Lawler, who was class valedictorian in 2009, was well-known for his love of Michael Jackson, the paper reported. When Lawler was a high school senior in 2005, he flew from New York to California to attend parts Jackson’s criminal trial. The musician had faced allegations of molesting a 13-year-old boy at his Neverland Ranch, though Jackson was eventually acquitted. FORMER DEMOCRATIC REP MONDAIRE JONES LAUNCHES COMEBACK BID FOR CRUCIAL SEAT THAT HELPED GOP TAKE HOUSEJackson biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli recounted in his book how he helped get Lawler into the courtroom, according to the Daily Beast. Taraborrelli wrote in « Michael Jackson: The Magic, The Madness, The Whole Story » that the teen had been « so disgusted » by testimony against Jackson « that he couldn’t help but mutter something derogatory under his breath. » In Taraborrelli’s account, Lawler was overheard by court officials and « tossed right out of the courtroom. » The photos in question were posted to Facebook and depict Lawler dressed in a jacket reminiscent of the one Jackson wore in the « Thriller » music video. The New York Times cited a person familiar with the costume who said that Lawler had used bronzer borrowed from female classmates to darken his skin. Lawler’s 2022 victory was one of several Republican victories in crucial New York districts, despite the state’s status as reliably blue overall. The 17th includes stretches through four suburban counties outside of New York City: Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester.Fox News Digital’s Emma Colton and Emily Robertson contributed to this report.

Melania Trump’s pro-choice stand isn’t that different from other Republican first ladies

[ad_1]

Melania Trump is not the only first lady to express pro-choice views. She joins several former Republican first ladies who have shared similar perspectives, often in their memoirs, despite this stance historically contrasting with the GOP platform.Other spouses of Republican presidents, such as Pat Nixon, Betty Ford, Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush and Laura Bush, have been recorded either during or after their husbands’ tenure in office expressing pro-choice views. »I feel very strongly that it was the best thing in the world when the Supreme Court voted to legalize abortion and, in my words, bring it out of the backwoods and put it in the hospital where it belongs, » Betty Ford said in a CBS News’ « 60 Minutes » interview in 1975, two years after Roe v. Wade was handed down.MELANIA TRUMP’S ABORTION VIEWS IN NEW MEMOIR SPUR OUTRAGE FROM PRO-LIFERS: ‘SHE IS WRONG’Following Ford’s comments on premarital sex, marijuana and abortion during the CBS interview, then-President Gerald Ford reportedly joked that she had cost him votes. As a more conservative first lady, Nancy Reagan avoided taking a public stance against abortion that would put her at odds with former President Ronald Reagan. However, she later revealed her personal position on the issue. »I’m against abortion, I don’t believe in abortion, » Reagan said at George Washington University in 1994, five years after her husband left the Oval Office. « On the other hand, I believe in a woman’s choice. So, it puts me somewhere in the middle, but I don’t know what you’d call that. »Barbara Bush, former President George H. W. Bush’s wife, was more reserved in her public statements about abortion and was at odds with her husband’s anti-abortion stance. While she was not as outspoken as Betty Ford, she wrote in her 1994 memoir, « I hate abortions, but I just could not make that choice for someone else. »Former first lady Laura Bush, wife of former President George W. Bush and daughter-in-law to Barbara Bush, also differed with the former Presidents Bush on abortion. PRO-LIFERS BLAST TRUMP ‘BETRAYAL’ WITH SHIFTING ABORTION STANCE, ANSWER ON FLORIDA AMENDMENT 4″I think it’s important that it remain legal, because I think it’s important for people for medical reasons and other reasons, » she said in an interview with Larry King Live in 2010. Pat Nixon, then-President Richard Nixon’s wife, told reporters during a 1972 press conference – as Roe v. Wade arguments were being considered by the Supreme Court – that she supported the right to choose an abortion, but opposed « wholesale abortion on demand. »Trump, wife of Republican presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump, wrote the memoir entitled « Melania » that is scheduled to come out on Oct. 8, per the Amazon release date. In the book, according to a preview by The Guardian, she expresses a viewpoint closely aligned with that of former first ladies before her. »It is imperative to guarantee that women have autonomy in deciding their preference of having children, based on their own convictions, free from any intervention or pressure from the government, » Trump reportedly wrote.VANCE, WALZ SPAR OVER ABORTION AND IMMIGRATION IN FIRST AND ONLY VP DEBATE « Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to determine what she does with her own body? A woman’s fundamental right of individual liberty, to her own life, grants her the authority to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes. »Restricting a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body. I have carried this belief with me throughout my entire adult life. »The former first lady drew criticism from pro-life advocates on social media after the excerpts were published just a month away from Election Day. This year, the Republican Party’s official platform also softened its language on abortion, as former President Trump also said he would not support a federal abortion ban.

Elon Musk to attend Trump Pennsylvania rally at site of assassination attempt

He « historically sacrificed his life to shield his wife and daughters » during the assassination attempt against Trump, the campaign said. Trump will also recognize the two other Americans who were wounded by the shooter, David Dutch and James Copenhaver.  « He will express his deep gratitude to law enforcement and first responders and thank the entire community for their outpouring of love and support in the wake of the attack, » the campaign said. « And when a shooter attacked our democracy and tried to end this movement, President Trump will return to the site, joined by tens of thousands of proud citizens, and together, they will celebrate a unifying vision for America’s future in an event like the world has never seen before, » his campaign added. Fox News’ Sarah Rumpf-Whitten and Paul Steinhauser contributed to this report.

Sanxingdui Ruins were discovered accidentally by a farmer; has since been the site of over 60K relics

[ad_1]

Sanxingdui Ruins is an archaeological site located in Southwest China’s Sichuan Province. The site has undergone heavy exploration through the years, with thousands of notable artifacts coming out of excavations. The Sanxingdui Ruins lie in Guanghan City. The site was first discovered in 1929 by a farmer who came across jade and stone artifacts while repairing a sewage ditch, according to Live Science. It was not until 1934 that an official scientific excavation commenced, according to China Daily. Since that first excavation, research and discovery has continued at the site. During the 1980s, the excavation of two pits was conducted, where over 1,000 artifacts were unearthed, according to China Daily. Those finds included figurines, human face masks and more. IRISH FARMER FINDS NEAR 60-POUND SLAB OF ANCIENT BOG BUTTER ON HIS LAND BY ‘PURE LUCK’Between 2019 and 2020, six more pits were excavated, according to the source, with more than 500 artifacts uncovered, including seashells, silk, ritual bronze vessels and gold masks. There has been an abundance of notable finds from the troves of artifacts discovered at the Sanxingdui Ruins. Among more recent discoveries, gold masks have been among the significant finds at the site. For example, in September 2022, it was announced by China’s National Cultural Heritage Administration that a 3,000-year-old gold mask was discovered at the site among royal tombs. MOM, SON DIG UP ANCIENT OBJECT OFTEN FOUND NEAR BURIAL GROUNDS WHILE GARDENINGThe ancient mask dated back to the Shang Dynasty, ARTNews reported at the time, and predated another gold mask that was found the fall before at the Sanxingdui Ruins. In 2021, a complete gold mask weighing about 100 grams was unearthed at the site, according to China’s Xinhua News Agency. The gold mask was larger, but weighed less than another fragment of a gold mask that was found at the site earlier on in 2021, according to the Sichuan Provincial Cultural Relics and Archaeology Research Institute. Since 2022, there have been more than 4,000 artifacts unearthed from the Sanxingdui Ruins, which include pottery, jadeware and stoneware, according to China’s Xinhua News Agency. To date, there have been over 60,000 relics found at the site, according to the source. The Sanxingdui Ruins is widely acknowledged as one of the « world’s greatest archaeological finds of the 20th century, » according to China’s Xinhua News Agency.
