Stephen A. Smith declares shooter ‘handed’ election to Trump: ‘You can’t buy a better photo’

[ad_1]

Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith argued on his podcast that the attempt on former President Trump’s life « secured » his victory in the 2024 election.Trump’s response after almost being assassinated, standing tall with his fist in the air as a flag waved nearby, instantly became an iconic image, praised by both his supporters and critics alike. »In my opinion, the shooter, he just handed Donald Trump the election, » he said on an episode of The Stephen A. Smith Show titled « Donald Trump is untouchable. » « That is what I believe. Of course, I don’t know that as fact. Of course, things could change; but, in my opinion, he just handed Donald Trump the election. » »Ladies and gentlemen, you can’t buy — I’ve been in media for 30 years — you can’t buy a better photo than what Donald Trump has at this disposal as we speak, » he said. He then recalled the incident and how Trump had « blood trickling down his ear and the right side of his face » and then he « raises his fist, cringing his face up. ‘Fight, fight, fight.’ He says it three times. And while raising his fist, surrounded by Secret Service agents, the American flag is behind him. Ladies and gentlemen, you can’t buy a better photo than that if you’re a politician! »TRUMP REFLECTS ON STUNNING PHOTO OF HIM AFTER BEING SHOT: ‘USUALLY YOU HAVE TO DIE’ TO HAVE ICONIC PICTURESmith argued that beyond the rally itself, the media has been praising Trump in a way that gives him an advantage over his opponent in the election. »Listen to the pundits on TV talking about how strong, how vibrant, how courageous, and they were using these words, and not coincidentally it was the antithesis of what they’ve been saying about President Biden, » he said. »Make no mistake about it, Donald Trump, in my opinion, secured the presidency with this, » he argued. « A Donald Trump that was impeached twice, a Donald Trump that had a $454 million settlement levied against him, a Donald Trump that was convicted on 34 felony counts yet was still the presumptive GOP nominee, that Donald Trump is now a martyr. »He went on to argue that a photo like this is uniquely powerful in an American society that puts such a high value on imagery. »You can slice it anyway you want to, » he said. « If you’re talking about America and the kind of impact visuals have on our society, good or bad, as a politician, it don’t get any better than the picture, by the Associated Press by the way, that you see of Donald Trump surrounded by Secret Service agents raising his fist, telling, imploring folks to continue to fight, with the American flag behind him, it doesn’t get any better than that, ladies and gentlemen. »Associated Press photographer Evan Vucci captured the image that immediately went viral and landed on newspaper front pages while dominating digital news sites and social media platforms across the world. JOURNALIST WHO WITNESSED TRUMP SHOOTING RECOUNTS MOMENT HE RAISED HIS FIST IN DEFIANCESome in the photojournalism business agreed with Smith’s assessment of the effect of the photo and expressed concern. An Axios media trend assessment on Tuesday argued that the « overuse » of the iconic image can « pose risks, » citing unnamed photographers who reportedly told the outlet that promoting the viral photos could be a form of « photoganda » because the Trump campaign will use them to « further their agenda, despite the photographers’ intent of capturing a news event. » »The amount that publications have been using Evan’s photo is kind of free PR for Trump in a way, and it’s dangerous for media organizations to keep sharing that photo despite how good it is, » an unnamed photo editor at a major news outlet told Axios.Washington Post art critic Phillip Kennicott called it « a photograph that could change America forever. »Vucci, a Pulitzer winner who has covered thousands of similar events for the AP since 2003, told Fox News Digital that he understood he was experiencing a historic moment in time as shots rang out in the direction of the former president.PHOTOGRAPHER CAPTURES ICONIC IMAGE OF BULLET WHIZZING PAST TRUMP AT PENNSYLVANIA RALLY »I was literally just thinking about doing the best possible job I could, because I knew that this was a moment in American history that I had to be at the top of my game for, » Vucci told Fox News Digital on Monday from Milwaukee, where he was preparing to photograph the Republican National Convention. « I knew immediately that it was going to be one of the most important things I’ll ever photograph, » he added, « and that I needed to do the best job possible. »Trump himself addressed the now world-famous photo during an interview with the New York Post on Monday, saying, « A lot of people say it’s the most iconic photo they’ve ever seen. They’re right and I didn’t die. Usually you have to die to have an iconic picture. »

GREG GUTFELD: Trump has faced figurative bullets and now literal ones, and he just gets stronger

[ad_1]

So, with the nomination of Trump and his VP, JD Vance, America woke up today to two white men who may well run the country for the next four years. That’s two Hitlers for the price of one. So what’s going on here? Why are evil white men not only leading in the polls but adding minority voters the way Joy Behar adds chins? Right now, these two evil whiteys have the Democratic Party looking about as organized as a smash-and-grab at 7-Eleven. The truth is there is a key difference between the left and right that goes beyond policy, which is why people of all types are shifting Republican. At heart, the right loves America. They’re not afraid to show it. They’re the ones who stand for the national anthem, who love the military, who see America as a force for good and get satisfaction from their families, their country and this show, of course. But the left is quite simply as miserable as Morning Joe when Mika’s dieting. Or Mika when Joe’s having his period. Both sides have their warriors, for sure. But at least the right are happy warriors. That’s why we’re winning. And thanks to Trump, Republicans got their groove back. For an example of the difference between the two sides, just look at the reactions to the assassination attempt. Think about it. The guy they hate gets shot and they’re the ones who are miserable, including many who made no secret that they wish the shooter hadn’t missed. But our guy gets shot and what happens? Everyone chants USA! Trump gets his head creased by a round from an AK, and he pops up full of defiance and love for his country, looking for his odor eaters. Because that’s what he meant by ‘fight’ of course. He meant fight for this place, fight for its founding principles, its freedoms, its strengths, not its damn pronouns. TRUMP LEADS BIDEN IN BLUE STATE FOLLOWING ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT: POLLNow, imagine the reverse. Imagine the reverse if Joe lost a single hair plug. He’d be in Walter Reed for a month. What a contrast. One president’s got a bloody ear and the other needs Miracle-Ear. You can wrap Trump’s whole head in bandages like the mummy and he’d still be more aware of his surroundings than old Joe. And Biden rallies? They’re in such boring, sad places: high school gyms where everyone acts like they’re at a doctor’s appointment and it’s a cross between Doctor Frankenstein and Doctor Kevorkian. Meanwhile, Trump rallies are massive and happy, and even with a shooting, people mourned. But they also moved ahead. You couldn’t take them down. Trump has faced figurative bullets and now literal ones, and he just gets stronger. And he’s always smiling. A real smile, too, not the skeleter grin Biden’s had since his plastic surgeon stapled his ears behind his head. Circumstances have shaped Trump into a greater force and one who’s having a ball. All while the media tried to paint him as soft. Oh, look, he fell. It was just a loud noise. Oh, it was probably glass, right? If these people were covering the Hindenburg, they would have told us, well, someone was just lighting farts. But if that happened to Biden, the media would be crying like Chris Christie when the McRib was discontinued. Meanwhile, the lawfare against Trump has been falling apart like a toilet seat on Lizzo’s commode. I love the word commode, what can I say? Americans of all stripes and colors saw it as BS. So doesn’t it seem like there’s something about the timing of all this? Biden’s pathetic debate, the shooting with Trump just turning his head, the end of the documents prosecution, and now today’s conviction of Menendez as we see how the corrupt Democrats led a guy accused of being an agent of a foreign power to stay on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and receive classified briefings while on trial. Democrats, maybe it’s time to ask yourself, is all this what happens when God or some other force for justice is on the other side? Because in this movie, we’re the good guys and the Dems know that finally they’re the bad and the reward is coming this November. So if you doubt any of this, just look at the supporters on each side. Trumpers are happy pappy’s ready to fight, sure, but happily so. While the other side are hysterical, terror-stricken mopes that are as unhappy as Jerry Nadler’s belt buckle. But the celebs on the right are out there swinging but enjoying the fight. Finally, just look at the name of Trump’s deputy communications director. Her name is Caroline Sunshine. That’s really her name. Can you get a happier name than Caroline Sunshine? She even looks like a Caroline Sunshine. And yet, no surprise Joe’s name is Biden because that’s all he’s doing: Biden’ Time.

Delegates seen wearing ear bandages at Republican convention in solidarity with Trump

[ad_1]

Several delegates at the Republican National Convention (RNC), including Arizona’s Stacey Goodman and Joe Neglia, were spotted donning ear bandages that mirrored the one being worn by former President Trump after he was wounded during an assassination attempt at his Pennsylvania rally on Saturday. »Yesterday when he came in, and there was that eruption of love in the room, I thought, ‘what can I do to honor the truth? What can I possibly do?' » Neglia told Fox News Digital. « And then I saw the bandage and I thought, I can do that. So, I put it on simply to honor Trump and to express sympathy with him and unity with him. »Neglia said he made the bandages en route to Milwaukee, where the convention is taking place this week. Trump has been wearing a bandage on his right ear where the bullet shot by Thomas Matthew Crooks’ pierced through his skin.BIDEN CAMPAIGN, DNC RESTART REPUBLICAN CONVENTION COUNTERPROGRAMMING AFTER TRUMP ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT »There’s a male version and a female version because there are only two genders! » Neglia said. Ron DeSantis, who had also challenged Trump for the Republican nomination. Both have now endorsed the former president, as the Republican Party becomes more unified behind their standard-bearer. PELOSI ‘CONVINCED BIDEN WILL LOSE,’ WORKING THE PHONES WITH HOPES TO ‘EASE HIM OFF THE TICKET,’ REPORT SAYSLIVE UPDATES: REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTIONRepublicans enthusiastically rallied behind Trump, with many thanking God for protecting Trump from narrowly surviving an assassination attempt over the weekend. The lawmakers also slammed President Biden’s « soft-on-crime policies, » and for the crisis at the southern border –  two key issues central to the Republican platform. »He has inspired a movement, » Rubio said in his speech. Trump is not scheduled to speak until Thursday, the final night of the convention, where he will formally accept the Republican Party’s nomination for president.

Armed man in ski mask arrested while approaching Republican National Convention perimeter in Milwaukee

[ad_1]

A man armed with an AK-47 pistol and wearing a ski mask was arrested on Monday just blocks from Fiserv Forum where the Republican National Convention is being held in Milwaukee, a federal law enforcement source confirmed to Fox News.Homeland Security Investigators and Capitol Police were conducting surveillance near the RNC perimeter when they noticed a suspicious man approaching. He was wearing a ski mask and carrying a tactical bag, Fox News’ source confirmed. Inside the bag, police found the gun and a full magazine. His intentions were unclear.Milwaukee Police confirmed the incident to Fox News, saying a 21-year-old man was arrested around 1 p.m. on Monday on the 1200 block of N. 11th Street. Police said the man does not have a concealed weapon license in Wisconsin or any other state.Charges are pending review by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office, police said.Fox News reached out to the Secret Service about the incident and was referred to Milwaukee Police. Fox News also reached out to Homeland Security Investigations and the Department of Homeland Security, but has not yet heard back. This is not the only disturbing security concern to take place at the RNC. A witness told Fox News the man lived in a nearby homeless camp and was brandishing a knife when he was shot. Also on Tuesday, Rep. Derrick Van Orden, R-Minn., said he was assaulted by a protester. He said a member of CODEPINK assaulted him while he was waiting in line to enter the venue. He called it an « incident of political violence. »CODEPINK said the woman « was intentionally bumped into by this bald, white member of Congress while he tried to shove past her. » The activist group denied Orden was assaulted. This all comes as Tuesday’s theme of the RNC is « Make America Safe Once Again » and former President Donald Trump has called to address crime in Milwaukee.

Raiders star Davante Adams’ agents shut down trade rumors: ‘Baseless’

[ad_1]

Trade rumors have been swirling around Las Vegas Raiders star receiver Davante Adams, to the point where ESPN personality Dan Orlovsky recently said Adams to the New York Jets was a « done deal. »However, those rumors were squashed on Tuesday via Adams’ agents, Kenny Chapman and Frank Bauer, who told ESPN that trade talks surrounding their client are « baseless. » »This is baseless, unfounded speculation and Davante is expected to be with the Raiders as there has been absolutely no trade talk – period, » the statement to ESPN reads. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMThese rumors came after the release of Netflix’s series « Receiver, » which had Adams featured as one of five players that cameras followed throughout the 2023 NFL season. And during that season, Adams’ frustrations with what was happening in Vegas were on full display as the Raiders struggled and needed to fire head coach Josh McDaniels and bench starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo during the year. RAIDERS’ DAVANTE ADAMS RIPS FORMER TEAMMATE JIMMY GAROPPOLO IN ‘RECEIVER’ DOCUSERIESAdams even admitted he signed off on Garoppolo being benched, adding that it had to happen « for me to remain a Raider, in all honesty. »The Raiders took interim off Antonio Pierce’s head coach title this offseason, and Adams noted during the docuseries that vibes were completely different in the building with him leading the pack. However, many still believe Adams would like to play elsewhere this season, especially the Jets, considering his relationship with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. During the show, Adams revealed that he and Rodgers hung out while the Jets were in town to face the Raiders, saying it was something he really needed. They ended up saying they missed each other before parting ways. With a healthy Rodgers in New York this season after tearing his Achilles four plays into his new NFL chapter in 2023, the Jets are once again a team to watch given their talent already on the roster in Breece Hall, Garrett Wilson and many others. Adams would fit right in as someone who developed chemistry with Rodgers on the Green Bay Packers for years. And the rumors saw gasoline pouring on them when Rodgers said he « can’t wait to play with him – again » during a golf tournament in Lake Tahoe recently. The reality of the situation, though, is that Adams is under contract with the Raiders until the 2027 season after inking a five-year, $140 million pact. There is, however, an opt-out for 2025 that would result in $15.7 million in dead cap for the Raiders.NFL trade rumors are easy to fuel, but Adams’ camp is trying to shut them down with just one week until he’s set to report in training camp. But as the saying goes: actions speak louder than words. We’ll see if new Raiders GM Tom Telesco stays true to his word that Adams « is a Raider, » which he told teams at the scouting combine when they asked about him earlier this year.Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Trump assassination attempt: Secret Service director faces new heat for ‘sloped roof’ comment

[ad_1]

The director of the Secret Service is facing blistering criticism Tuesday after claiming during an interview that personnel were not positioned on top of the building where the Trump rally shooter opened fire because of a « sloped roof, » despite images showing snipers set up on a sloped roof behind the former president’s podium. U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle made the remark during an interview with ABC News, in which she said the agency was aware of the security vulnerabilities presented by the building Thomas Matthew Crooks took a sniper’s position on to aim at Trump. « That building in particular has a sloped roof at its highest point. And so, you know, there’s a safety factor that would be considered there that we wouldn’t want to put somebody up on a sloped roof. And so, you know, the decision was made to secure the building, from inside, » she said.  But critics on social media aren’t having it, calling Cheatle’s « sloped roof » comment a « total BS excuse » that « defies believability. » SECRET SERVICE DIRECTOR: TRUMP RALLY SHOOTER WAS IDENTIFIED AS ‘POTENTIAL PERSON OF SUSPICION’ « Our snipers used to set in on mountain tops in Afghanistan. On the down slopes if need be, » former Army Ranger and author Sean Parnell wrote on X, calling Cheatle’s explanation a « total BS excuse. » « The stupidity of this statement explains so much of why s— hit the fan that day. Absolute incompetence, » he added. « This sad excuse about defies believability. The snipers above President Trump were on a sloped roof so why couldn’t they secure the sloped roof that the assassin was on? » said Jim DeMint, a former U.S. senator from South Carolina. « She should have been fired days ago. We need accountability. » TRUMP SHOOTING FUNDRAISER FOR COREY COMPERATORE RAISES MORE THAN $1 MILLION FOR SLAIN FIREFIGHTER’S FAMILY « Ironically, the snipers who were behind Trump during the rally were on a sloped roof, » Trending Politics co-owner Collin Rugg also said on X. « She is bulls—ing and getting away with it. » The Secret Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital asking to clarify Cheatle’s remarks. Fox News’ Chris Pandolfo contributed to this report.

Jack Black cancels tour after backlash for bandmate’s ‘don’t miss’ Trump assassination comment

[ad_1]

Actor Jack Black has canceled his band’s concert tour after his bandmate made a shocking comment about the assassination attempt against former President Trump. At a Tenacious D concert on Sunday, Black sang « Happy Birthday » to his bandmate and fellow actor Kyle Gass, before asking him to « make a wish. » Gass replied with, « Don’t miss Trump next time. » His comments came just hours after Trump narrowly survived a shooting at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, where one attendee was killed and two others were critically wounded. A bullet grazed Trump’s ear in the assassination attempt.Black and Gass responded to the backlash on Tuesday after a video clip of their exchange went viral on social media. JACK BLACK’S BAND UNDER FIRE AFTER BANDMATE MAKES DARK ‘WISH’ AFTER TRUMP ASSASSINATION ATTEMPTIn a statement posted to his Instagram account, Black said he was « blindsided » by Gass’s remark. »I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form, » he wrote.

« After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding. »Gass also put out a statement apologizing for the remark. »The line I improvised onstage Sunday night in Sydney was highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake, » he wrote on Instagram. « I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone. » »What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgment. I profoundly apologize to those I’ve let down and truly regret any pain I’ve caused. »Black, a staunch supporter of President Biden, recently spoke at a star-studded fundraiser for the Democratic candidate in Los Angeles that reportedly raised $30 million for his campaign.

Trump leads Biden in blue state following assassination attempt: poll

[ad_1]

A new poll shows former President Trump leading President Biden in Virginia by three percentage points as Republicans look to flip the state after Biden trounced Trump by 10 points in the Old Dominion State in 2020. Virginia has voted for Democrats in each presidential election since President Barack Obama’s first campaign for the White House in 2008.The new Virginia Commonwealth University-Wilder School poll, reported by the Washington Post, shows Biden dropping from the 42% support he enjoyed in the last VCU-Wilder poll, released in January, to 36%.Trump was unchanged at 39%, with the poll suggesting a dip in support for Biden, rather than any substantial gains for Trump.TRUMP, YOUNGKIN MEET FOR FIRST TIME AS GOP EYES WINNING VIRGINIA IN NOVEMBERStill, the poll bodes well for the Trump campaign and raises more concern for the Biden camp, who have been battling calls from within their own party for the president to drop out of the race following his disastrous debate performance on June 27. The VCU-Wilder poll was conducted between June 24 and July 3, so some of the polling was done in the wake of that debate.Biden’s job approval stood at 36% in the poll, while 58% disapproved. Respondents rated the « rising cost of living » as the top issue in the race, followed by women’s reproductive rights and immigration. The 46th president continues to leak support from the Black community. Forty-six percent said they would vote for Biden, down from 67% in the last VCU-Wilder poll, while 13.7% said they would vote for Trump. The VCU-Wilder poll consisted of telephone interviews with 809 Virginia adults ages 18 and older, with about a third conducted on landlines and the rest on cellphones, the Post reports. It has a 4.8-point margin of error. Virginia, which is home to many who work in neighboring Washington, D.C., has not been considered a battleground state in the 2024 election, but recent polling indicates that it could play out to be a tighter than anticipated race. A Fox News poll published in June shows Trump and Biden with 48% support each in a deadlocked match-up in the Old Dominion State. However, a New York Times-Siena College poll conducted in Virginia July 9-12 showed Biden leading Trump by three percentage points — 48 to 45 — among likely voters.FOX NEWS POLL: BIDEN, TRUMP IN A DEAD HEAT IN VIRGINIARepublican Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin has previously said that Virginia « is in play » and could deliver a win to Trump come November. « I think Virginia is in play. Let’s just remind ourselves – Joe Biden won Virginia by 10 points in 2020. I ended up winning by two the next year. What we’ve demonstrated is commonsense conservative policies work, and Virginians appreciate that, » Youngkin said in an interview with radio host and Fox News contributor Guy Benson in May. The governor reiterated those comments in a Fox News Digital interview in June.Back in 2020, Biden won the state by 10 points over Trump. During the 2016 election, when former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton faced off against Trump, the Democratic Party also claimed victory over Virginia, with Clinton earning 49.8% of the vote to Trump’s 44.4%. Youngkin captured the governor’s office in 2021, thanks in part to Trump’s backing. However, the VCU-Wilder poll found Virginians’ approval of Youngkin down from 54% in January to 50% in the new poll, while his disapproval jumped from 36% to 39%.Meanwhile, Virginians support incumbent Sen. Tim Kaine, a Democrat, over Republican challenger Hung Cao, by 49% to 38% respectively. The poll also found that 53% of Virginia voters said they were less likely to vote for Trump because of his conviction in New York with 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree.Another 31% said they were more likely to vote for him after the convictions. Among independents, 45% said the convictions made them less likely to support Trump while 25% said they were more likely.Fox News’ Emma Colton, Paul Steinhauser and Matthew Reidy contributed to this report.

Former Trump primary rival Haley in Republican convention spotlight on day after JD Vance named running mate

[ad_1]

MILWAUKEE- One day after Donald Trump was formally nominated as the GOP’s 2024 presidential nominee and named Sen. JD Vance of Ohio as his running mate, Trump’s final rival during the presidential primaries takes center stage at the Republican National Convention.Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who served as U.N. ambassador in the Trump administration, will speak at the convention on Tuesday, multiple sources familiar with the decision confirmed to Fox News over the weekend. As of last week, Haley wasn’t invited to speak at the convention and wasn’t planning on attending the four-day confab, which is being held in swing state, Wisconsin’s largest city. But following Saturday’s attempted assassination attempt on Trump at a rally in western Pennsylvania, where the former president was visibly bloodied after a bullet grazed his ear and where one spectator was killed and two critically injured, the GOP quickly unified around their standard-bearer. And as part of that push for unity, Haley was invited to speak at the convention.TRUMP ANNOUNCES JD VANCE AS HIS 2024 RUNNING MATE Haley launched her presidential campaign in February last year, becoming the first major candidate to challenge Trump, who had announced his candidacy three months earlier. She was the final rival to Trump, battling the former president in a contentious two-candidate showdown from the New Hampshire primary in late January through Super Tuesday in early March.CLICK HERE FOR THE LATEST FOX NEWS REPORTING FROM THE GOP CONVENTIONHaley announced that she was suspending her White House campaign on March 6, the day after Trump swept 14 of 15 GOP nominating contests on Super Tuesday. As she departed the race, Haley made it clear that she intended to keep speaking out. And Haley continued to grab up to 20% of the vote in Republican presidential primaries in the months after she dropped out.In late May, in her first public comments since announcing the end of her 2024 campaign, Haley said she would vote for Trump.Haley won a total of 97 delegates during the Republican presidential primaries. And last week, Haley released all of her delegates and urged them to support Trump.Asked last week in an interview with Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade about Haley, Trump said « there was a lot of bad blood there, and she stayed too long. »Pointing to another former nomination rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who left the race three days ahead of the New Hampshire primary, Trump said, « DeSantis left right after Iowa. She should have left right after Iowa. »Also in the spotlight on the second night of the convention, a handful of high-profile Republican Senate candidates will address GOP delegates from the podium of Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum. Thanks in part to a very favorable Senate electoral map, the GOP aims to win back the majority in the chamber that it lost in the 2020 election cycle.Tuesday’s session follows Monday’s blockbuster developments. Just ahead of his formal nomination during the convention’s presidential roll call, Trump announced his much anticipated choice for running mate. With an eye toward the future of a Republican Party dominated by Trump and his legions of MAGA supporters, the former president added the 39-year-old Vance to the party’s national ticket.Trump will now share the ticket with one of his top supporters in the Senate and a one-time Trump critic who has transformed into a leading America First disciple.Vance, a former venture capitalist and the author of the bestselling memoir, « Hillbilly Elegy, » before running for elective office, was one of a handful of Republicans considered top running mate contenders. That group also included North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida. As Fox News reported, Rubio and Burgum received phone calls a couple of hours ahead of Trump’s announcement that they would not be named as the running mate. And a well-placed source in Vance’s political orbit told Fox News that the senator wasn’t informed he was the running mate until 20 minutes before Trump unveiled his choice in a social media post on the Truth Social platform.Get the latest updates from the 2024 campaign trail, exclusive interviews and more at our Fox News Digital election hub.

The Pennsylvania gun club where would-be Trump assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks practiced his aim was open Monday after visits from the FBI amid a probe into the deadly security breach that let an armed madman within 130 yards of the former president. It was not immediately clear whether investigators found anything of evidentiary value at the range, and members condemned the suspect and his actions as something their community is « not about. »A lawyer for the Clairton Sportmen’s Club previously distanced the members from Crooks.FORMER SECRET SERVICE AGENT WARNS AGENCY ‘STRETCHED THIN’ WITH NEW RESPONSIBILITIES, LACK OF MANPOWER »Obviously, the Club fully admonishes the senseless act of violence that occurred [Saturday], » attorney Rob Bootay said in a statement. « The Club also offers its sincerest condolences to the Comperatore family and extends prayers to all of those injured including the former President. »The club is one of several in the area where members take part in sports shooting events and promote firearms safety. The FBI’s visit comes as the bureau looks to identify a motive and is scrutinizing newly obtained data from the suspect’s phone.PENNSYLVANIA TRUMP RALLY SHOOTING SUSPECT PICTURED AFTER DEADLY ASSASSINATION ATTEMPTLaw enforcement sources with knowledge of the situation told Fox News that Crooks fired a DPMS AR-15 5.56 at Trump and the bystanders. I’m open to being surprised by J.D. Vance, Trump’s somewhat predictable V.P. pick

[ad_1]

In a week filled with giant news surprises, I find myself once again surprised that former President Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick wasn’t more surprising.

In the end, the bread crumbs were real, not some reality-show head fake, as Trump chose 39-year-old Republican Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio to be his running mate. The young senator, elected from his home state in 2022, is a writer, a father and a Marine. He is simultaneously a Washington newcomer and a veteran of elite political circles for those who have a long enough memory.

Vance made his name first by writing the huge bestseller « Hillbilly Elegy » in 2016, a moving memoir of his working-class upbringing and Appalachian pedigree that was made into a movie starring Glenn Close in 2020. The book became a sort of unofficial guide to understanding Trump voters in the run-up to 2016. After Trump won, Vance became a sought-after Trump-voter-translator in media and academic worlds, making it a mission to bring concerns of Appalachian working-class voters to the ruling class.TRUMP ANNOUNCES OHIO SEN JD VANCE AS HIS 2024 RUNNING MATEHis ability to understand White working-class Americans, paired with an Ivy League education, made him a great fit for the commentariat and he thrived in it. He was also sufficiently critical of Trump then to make him palatable to those audiences, delivering some blistering soundbites that will come back to haunt the ticket. But his ability to straddle two worlds is also what makes this pick a missed opportunity for Trump. Vance brings to the ticket what Trump already had— working-class Rust Belt appeal paired with an ability to perform well in and understand elite media environments.

The former president may like Vance for those qualities, but he doesn’t need Vance for them because he already has them. I’d wager he likes Vance even more because the Ohio Republican had the accolades of the elites and spurned them in his populist conversion to a Trump ally.

But is that a recipe for electoral success? FOX NEWS POLITICS: VANCE VICTORIOUS!Trump had the opportunity to use this pick to reach out to fence-sitting double-haters, who may have softened into double-dislikers or even persuadable voters after Biden’s terrible debate performance. A pick with a lighter rhetorical touch and a heavier resume, like Gov. Doug Burgum of North Dakota, might have done that. A pick like Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, would have brought a popular figure with executive experience and a track record of winning suburban votes in a purple state where Biden’s weakness has made Trump newly competitive. For his part, Vance struggled in his first-ever (and to be fair, very ambitious!) race for office when compared to other Republicans, running 6-10 points behind others on the ticket. TRUMP RUNNING MATE JD VANCE: INSIDE HIS HOLLYWOOD CONNECTIONNonetheless, he beat a formidable Democrat Rep. Tim Ryan by six points, and a man who had burst onto the Washington scene as a literary figure years before returned to Washington again in a different form.Today, a younger, more populist figure potentially becomes a heartbeat away from the presidency. He also becomes the front-runner for the 2028 GOP presidential nomination should Trump win in 2024 — as seems increasingly likely. So, is this pick a play for a policy legacy? History tells me Trump doesn’t care about the details of policy, but he likely cares enough about a general spirit of America-First-ism and economic populism, particularly on trade, that it was worth it to him to boost someone who would not risk a reversion of the GOP to its more establishment, free-market form in four years. Perhaps Vance, the V.P. pick, will take on a traditional attack-dog role, signaling that Trump’s more restrained stance of the last month is here to stay.CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINION

Vance is undoubtedly smart and impressive, as his life’s arc attests. He served his country honorably as a Marine, joining in the post-9/11 era. He will be the only veteran on either ticket and brings special knowledge of that community. He is arguably the best public speaker, when it comes to policy specifics, of any of the four people on either of the major tickets. His inspiring life story has been introduced to many an American via a best-selling book and a Ron Howard film. You can’t underestimate the import of a pop-cultural connection to Trump or to everyday voters, who will know him as the « Hillbilly Elegy » guy first and then will get to know him as Trump’s running mate. Indeed, a couple of my non-political friends immediately texted me after seeing his name in news alerts to clarify if this was the guy from the Glenn Close movie and book they read a couple of years ago.It would not have been my strategy, but Trump’s strategy rarely is. So, I guess maybe the surprise is, by the end of writing this, I’m open to being surprised. CLICK HERE FOR MORE FROM MARY KATHARINE HAM

Trump’s classified docs case dismissal is a rebuke of Biden’s out-of-control DOJ

[ad_1]

It never made sense or seemed right.  With the wave of a wand, a private citizen was granted unlimited power to prosecute a former president of the United States.  In a tectonic opinion issued Monday, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon ruled that the appointment of special counsel Jack Smith was unconstitutional.  As a consequence, she correctly dismissed the Florida criminal indictment of Donald Trump over his handling of classified documents.Smith and the Department of Justice (DOJ) will likely file an immediate appeal to a higher court.  But Cannon’s well-reasoned 93-page opinion establishes a clarifying record of sound legal judgment that will be difficult to overcome.  At some point, the U.S. Supreme Court may be forced to intervene.       JUDGE DISMISSES TRUMP’S FLORIDA CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS CASEAt the heart of the federal judge’s decision is the Appointments Clause of the Constitution which provides the exclusive means for selecting all « Officers of the United States. »  They must be appointed by the president and confirmed by the senate.  Smith failed both requirements.  Instead, he was anointed special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland on November 18, 2022, without legitimate statutory authority.  His unilateral act commandeered the legislative right of Congress that animates and preserves our revered separation of powers.Cannon concluded, « The Framers gave Congress a pivotal role in the appointment of principal and inferior officers.  That role cannot be usurped by the Executive Branch or diffused elsewhere —whether in this case or in another case, whether in times of heightened national need or not. » (Opinion, page 91)  TALE OF TWO CONVENTIONS: GOP UNITED BEHIND TRUMP WHILE DEMS IN DISARRAYIn two seminal cases, the U.S. Supreme Court emphasized that the Appointments Clause is « more than a matter of ‘etiquette or protocol’; it is among the significant structural safeguards of the constitutional scheme. » (Edmond v. United States, 520 U.S. 651; Buckley vs. Valeo, 424 U.S. 1)In naming Smith to his almighty position, Garland relied mainly on internal regulations devised by the DOJ that deliberately circumvented Congress.  Tradition and « historical practice, » he argued, justified his maneuver.  However, that was a clever misrepresentation of inconsistent history.  While it is true that other special counsels have operated without specific legislative consent —Patrick Fitzgerald, Robert Mueller, John Durham, David Weiss, and Robert Hur— all of them had been presidentially appointed and Senate approved in prior positions as officers of the United States.  Smith never was.Belatedly, and in opposition to Trump’s motion to dismiss the case against him, Garland and Smith cited a handful of statutes that purported to rationalize the appointment.  But Judge Cannon methodically disassembled them as wholly inapplicable to a special counsel who was given nearly unfettered authority to do as he pleases.      CLASSIFIED DOCS CASE DISMISSAL MEANS ‘GREATEST’ LEGAL ‘THREAT’ TO TRUMP IS ‘GONE’: EXPERTSWhat concerned Cannon was how Garland’s selection of Smith « imposed almost no supervision or direction over the special counsel and gave him broad power to render final decisions on behalf of the United States. » (Opinion, page 72)   How is it possible that an attorney general could vest in a private citizen the immense and unchecked power of a U.S. Attorney when, in fact, Smith is not and never was?  His role is not to assist an approved U.S. Attorney but replace one entirely.  By evading constitutional restrictions, Garland single-handedly stripped Congress of its vital role of Senate approval.  Judge Aileen Cannon remedied this mistake.  In doing so, she built on the compelling contentions of two former Attorneys General, Edwin Meese and Michael Mukasey, who filed an amicus (« friend of the court ») brief.  Their persuasive arguments can be seen writ large throughout the opinion.  Cannon also expressed alarm at the $12 million already spent by Smith and where exactly the money came from.  The expenses were not doled out by Congress, which means that both Garland and the special counsel violated the Appropriations Clause of the Constitution in much the same way that his assignation was unlawful abuse of the Appointments Clause.   CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINIONIf the decision dismissing the prosecution of Trump ever reaches the nation’s highest court, it will meet at least one justice who had already questioned the legitimacy of the special counsel.  Justice Clarence Thomas expressed serious misgivings during the recent presidential immunity case.  Indeed, Cannon cited it in her lengthy opinion. Regardless, the current ruling makes it effectively impossible for Smith’s Florida classified documents case from reaching trial before the presidential election in November or even the inauguration should Trump prevail at the ballot box.  The judge did not address the merits of the indictment, which had troubling aspects of prosecutorial overreach in the stacking of charges that seemed weaker by the dozen. Cannon’s ruling is not binding on the federal judge in Smith’s other case against Trump in Washington, D.C. over alleged election-interference.  But that prosecution is already stalled by the two recent Supreme Court decisions over the immunity issue and the improper use of an obstruction statute.  Nevertheless, Justice Thomas’ observation that Smith is acting without authority may breathe new life into Trump’s long-term defense in the January 6th case against him.The erosion of Jack Smith’s misbegotten prosecutions represents an important course correction in the increasingly abusive tactics employed by President Joe Biden’s Justice Department and his sycophantic attorney general.  These cases, as well as those brought by local district attorneys in New York and Georgia, were always politically driven and legally anemic persecutions designed to delegitimize Trump’s electoral chances.  They have boomeranged spectacularly. It is a reminder of what the English philosopher and jurist, Jeremy Bentham, once said, « It is never the law itself that is in the wrong; it is always some wicked interpreter of the law that has corrupted and abused it. » CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM GREGG JARRETT

MSNBC yanks anti-Trump ‘Morning Joe’ off air following assassination attempt

[ad_1]

MSNBC pulled its flagship AM program « Morning Joe » from airing on Monday in the wake of the assassination attempt on former President Trump.Viewers who tuned in Monday expecting to see the staunchly anti-Trump program, hosted by Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, were greeted instead by continued NBC News special reporting on the attempt on Trump’s life on Saturday. A spokesperson said « Morning Joe » will resume airing on Tuesday.According to a CNN report, a person familiar with the decision said it was made in part over fear that one of the show’s many guests over a four-hour broadcast « might make an inappropriate comment on live television that could be used to assail the program and network as a whole. »According to CNN’s report, Cesar Conde, the chairman of NBCUniversal News Group, decided to yank the show in consultation with MSNBC president Rashida Jones, as well as the show’s co-hosts.The call by MSNBC to keep « Morning Joe » off the airwaves shocked political observers, with some conservatives saying it demonstrated a lack of trust in one of its most high-profile shows to sensitively cover a fraught situation. »The fact that Morning Joe’s own network can’t trust its flagship brand not to spew reckless and inflammatory crap during breaking news tells you all you need to know about the credibility of the MSNBC line-up, » a veteran Republican consultant told Fox News Digital. The news stirred up the left, too.Liberal journalist Jeff Jarvis fumed on X, « What the f—, MSNBC? You preempted your excellent weekend programming… and now you’ve silenced [Morning Joe] in favor of your anodyne streaming news cos-play called Now? This is when we need the analysis and conversation these shows bring us (yes, with controversy; that is how public discourse works through it: with discussion). It is shocking that NBC/Comcast do not understand their own company’s programs and raison d’etre. »Scarborough and Brzezinski have a complicated history with Trump. The two hosts stood out in their bullishness on his political chances in 2015 and 2016 and frequently interviewed him on their show, but they became two of his most vehement critics after he became president. The show’s hosts and guests have repeatedly called him an authoritarian threat to the nation. Known to be one of President Biden’s favorite programs and beloved by the New York and Washington liberal establishment, the political chat show has taken on new influence in recent weeks due to Biden’s political woes.A spokesman for MSNBC didn’t immediately return a request for comment.Trump was wounded in the ear by a would-be assassin’s bullet on Saturday at his Pennsylvania rally. FRANKLIN GRAHAM, OTHERS »From a medical point of view, that idea of showing courage, and then showing compassion, reaching out on social media to the families of the victim and those who were injured, also sends the right message. »The doctor also noted the quickness with which Trump got down when the shots were fired and then was led off the stage, which showed an « adroitness. » »You don’t know what you’re going to do in that situation, » he said.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTERSiegel also emphasized how « miraculous » it is that the former president survived the incident. »I’ve been talking to emergency room doctors, vascular surgeons and trauma surgeons all over the country this morning, and nobody can remember a case like this, » he said. In particular, the doctor noted how rare it is for someone to be only grazed by a bullet from a high-powered file. »I trained in the Bellevue [Hospital Center] emergency room, I took care of gunshot victims countless times, and I never saw anything from a high-powered rifle that only grazed something. » »People can recount someone being grazed by a bullet — I’ve seen that in the ER, but never from a high-powered rifle, » Siegel said. For more Health articles, visit www.foxnews/healthThe doctor stressed the small chance of Trump escaping this alive — « especially since it’s next to the part of the brain that is absolutely uniformly deadly, over 95% deadly, if he’d been hit in the brain there. »
