Tens of thousands of illegal immigrants with sexual assault, murder convictions in US: ICE data

[ad_1]

Tens of thousands of illegal immigrants with sex offenses and homicide convictions could be loose on the streets, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) data provided to lawmakers this week. The agency provided data to Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, about national data for illegal immigrants with criminal charges or convictions. The data, as of July 2024, is broken down by those in detention, and those who are not in detention — known as the non-detained docket.  The non-detained docket includes illegal immigrants who have final orders of removal or are going through removal proceedings but are not detained in ICE custody. There are currently more than 7 million people on that docket. The data says that, among those not in detention, there are 425,431 convicted criminals and 222,141 with pending criminal charges.ICE NON-DETAINED DOCKET EXPLODES TO 7.4M CASESThose include 62,231 convicted of assault, 14,301 convicted of burglary, 56,533 with drug convictions and 13,099 convicted of homicide. An additional 2,521 have kidnapping convictions and 15,811 have sexual assault convictions. There are an additional 1,845 with pending homicide charges, 42,915 with assault charges, 3,266 with burglary charges and 4,250 with assault charges. »As of July 21, 2024, there were 662,566 noncitizens with criminal histories on ICE’s national docket—13,099 criminally convicted MURDERS! » Gonzales said in a statement. « Americans deserve to be SAFE in our own communities. »In a statement accompanying the latter, ICE took aim at so-called « sanctuary » cities, which refuse to cooperate with federal law enforcement in deporting illegal immigrant criminals. »ICE recognizes that some jurisdictions are concerned that cooperating with federal immigration officials will erode trust with immigrant communities and make it harder for local law enforcement to serve those populations. However, ‘sanctuary’ policies can end up shielding dangerous criminals, who often victimize those same communities, » it said.It also stressed DHS’ efforts to remove illegal immigrants: « From mid-May 2023 through the end of July 2024, DHS removed or returned more than 893,600 individuals, including more than 138,300 individuals in family units. The majority of all individuals encountered at the Southwest Border over the past three years have been removed, returned, or expelled. »‘POLITICAL STUNT’: CRITICS DISMISS HARRIS’ EXPECTED ARIZONA BORDER VISIT AS IMMIGRATION REMAINS TOP ISSUEThe Biden administration came under fire for releasing many migrants who came to the U.S. border into the interior, which coincided with a sharp drop in deportations as it focused on prioritizing public safety and national security threats. There were 142,580 removals in FY 23, up considerably from 72,177 in FY 22 and 59,011 in FY 21, but still down from the highs of 267,258 under the Trump administration in FY 19. The number of illegal immigrants on the non-detained docket, meanwhile, has soared from 3.7 million in FY 2021 to nearly 4.8 million in FY 2022 to over 7 million in FY 2023. Republicans have blamed the border crisis on the policies of the administration, including rolling back Trump policies that limited « catch and release. » »It may be shocking to hear that the Biden-Harris administration is actively releasing tens of thousands of criminal illegal aliens into our communities, but their own numbers conclusively prove this to be the case. This defies all common sense, » House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green told Fox News Digital. « Under President Biden and his ‘border czar,’ Vice President Harris, DHS law enforcement has been directed to mass-release illegal aliens whom they know have criminal convictions or are facing charges for serious crimes—and these dangerous, destructive individuals are making their way into every city and state in this country. How many more Americans need to die or be victimized before this administration is forced to abide by the laws they swore to uphold? This is madness. It is something no civilized, well-functioning society should tolerate. »CLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF THE BORDER SECURITY CRISISIn a statement on Saturday, DHS said the data was being « misinterpreted. » »The data goes back decades; it includes individuals who entered the country over the past 40 years or more, the vast majority of whose custody determination was made long before this Administration, » a spokesperson said. « It also includes many who are under the jurisdiction or currently incarcerated by federal, state or local law enforcement partners. »The administration has said it needs more funding and reforms from Congress to fix a « broken » immigration system, including via a bipartisan Senate bill introduced this year – which has been rejected by Republicans. It has also pointed to a sharp drop in arrivals since President Biden signed an executive order limiting asylum at the border in June. DHS also said it has removed over 180,000 noncitizens with criminal convictions since Jan. 2021. »Despite the challenges of operating within a broken immigration system, and in the face of an enormous workload and consistently limited funding, DHS continues to enforce the law to secure our borders, » DHS said in its letter. That bill would increase the number of ICE detention beds, but critics of the administration have pointed to numbers showing not all beds are being filled currently. The data’s release comes as Vice President Kamala Harris visits the southern border in Arizona as she seeks to blunt criticism from former President Trump on the matter, and renew her call for the bipartisan border bill. Conservatives were not swayed by the visit. »Border Czar Kamala Harris has had nearly four years to protect America and failed, » RJ Hauman, president of the National Immigration Center for Enforcement (NICE), told Fox News Digital in response to the data. « She is allowing tens of thousands of murderers and rapists to roam free. She puts criminals first and the safety and security of you and your family last. »Fox News’ Bill Melugin contributed to this report.

SpaceX launches mission to space station that will bring back stranded NASA astronauts next year

[ad_1]

SpaceX on Saturday launched a Falcon rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Saturday with two crew members on board to deliver the Dragon capsule to the International Space Station that will bring back the astronauts stranded by their troubled Boeing Starliner next year. In June, NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams launched on the Starliner, which suffered thruster problems and helium leaks, leaving the space agency to conclude returning them to Earth in the capsule after what was supposed to be an eight-day mission was too risky. The crewless Starliner eventually landed in New Mexico earlier this month, while Wilmore and Williams remained on the space station. NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Gorbunov launched from the Kennedy Space Center on Saturday’s mission with two empty seats on Dragon that will bring Wilmore and Williams home in February. BOEING STARLINER UNDOCKS FROM SPACE STATION, HEADS BACK TO EARTH UNMANNED AS CREW STAYS BEHINDTwo astronauts were cut from the SpaceX mission to make room for Wilmore and Williams. Once Hague and Gorbunov arrive at the space station Sunday afternoon, four other astronauts who were delayed a month by Starliner’s problems will return to Earth in their own SpaceX capsule. « There’s always something that is changing, » Hague said before the launch of the evolving nature of space missions. « Maybe this time it’s been a little more visible to the public. »NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy called « human spaceflight » « complicated and dynamic » at a post-launch news conference Saturday. « What a fabulous day it was today, » she said. « We only have two crew members instead of four. A crew member change is not a small thing. »She added that « it was the right thing to do. »NASA ASTRONAUT SAYS STARLINER CREW LIKELY TO CHANGE EXERCISE ROUTINE DURING EXTENDED ISS STAY Melroy said the two astronauts who were cut from the mission were there to emotionally support Hague and Gorbunov at the launch. « The International Space Station is unbelievable, it’s a really special place, » she added, saying it « allows people to « look beyond gravity » and to build technologies to explore the whole solar system. After they reach the space station, Hague and Gorbunov will be doing hundreds of « exciting experiments, » including studying human cells and blood clotting.Dana Hutcherson, deputy program manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, said he was « pleased to report Nick and Aleksandr are safely in orbit » after an « incredibly smooth » launch and are expected to land at the space station around 5:30 p.m. ET Sunday. « The crew is getting out of their suits at this time, » Hutcherson said, adding that Gorbunov and Hague would be getting some rest and a meal in the capsule before preparing for docking operations. »CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPAfter docking on the ISS, they’re expected to have a welcome ceremony. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

White House mum amid outrage over data showing how many illegal immigrant criminals are free in US

[ad_1]

The White House has yet to comment on new data released to lawmakers showing the number of illegal immigrants with convictions for sex offenses and homicide convictions who are not in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention. The agency provided data to Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, about illegal immigrants with criminal charges or convictions. The data, as of July 2024, is broken down by those in detention and those who are not in detention, known as the non-detained docket. The non-detained docket includes noncitizens who have final orders of removal or are going through removal proceedings but are not in ICE custody. There are more than 7.4 million people on that docket, up from around 3.7 million when former President Trump left office. TENS OF THOUSANDS OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS WITH SEXUAL ASSAULT, MURDER CONVICTIONS ROAMING US STREETS: ICE DATA The data shows that, among those not in detention, there are 425,431 convicted criminals and 222,141 with pending criminal charges. The data does not reveal how many of those criminals are recent arrivals. For comparison, in August 2016, toward the end of the Obama administration, ICE said there were about 2.2 million noncitizens on the non-detained docket and about 368,574 were convicted criminals. In the latest data, the criminals include 62,231 convicted of assault, 14,301 convicted of burglary, 56,533 with drug convictions and 13,099 convicted of homicide. An additional 2,521 have kidnapping convictions, and 15,811 have sexual assault convictions. There are an additional 1,845 with pending homicide charges, 42,915 with assault charges, 3,266 with burglary charges and 4,250 with assault charges. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the data and whether it had been aware of the numbers. Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign also did not comment. Harris is at the southern border in Arizona. Fox News Digital has also reached out to the Department of Homeland Security. The news sparked outrage from Republicans, who tied the numbers to the policies of the Biden administration and those sanctuary jurisdictions who refuse to cooperate with ICE.‘POLITICAL STUNT’: CRITICS DISMISS HARRIS’ EXPECTED ARIZONA BORDER VISIT AS IMMIGRATION REMAINS TOP ISSUERep, Gonzales called the data « beyond disturbing » and said « it should be a wake-up call for the Biden-Harris administration and cities across the country that hide behind sanctuary policies. » »It’s time for Washington to move past rhetoric and toward results. Americans deserve to feel safe in their communities. As an appropriator, I will do everything in my power to ensure ICE has the resources necessary to deport noncitizens with a criminal record. This must be a priority, » Gonzales said in a statement. « The Biden-Harris administration also plays a part in cleaning up the mess their failed policies have created. They have the ear of sanctuary city mayors. It’s time to encourage them to reverse course and put the safety of American citizens first. »Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green said the release of illegal immigrants into the U.S. « defies all common sense. » »This is madness. It is something no civilized, well-functioning society should tolerate, » he said.In the letter to Gonzales, ICE took aim at so-called « sanctuary » cities that refuse to cooperate with federal law enforcement in deporting illegal immigrant criminals. »ICE recognizes that some jurisdictions are concerned that cooperating with federal immigration officials will erode trust with immigrant communities and make it harder for local law enforcement to serve those populations. However, ‘sanctuary’ policies can end up shielding dangerous criminals, who often victimize those same communities, » it said.It also stressed DHS’s efforts to remove illegal immigrants. »From mid-May 2023 through the end of July 2024, DHS removed or returned more than 893,600 individuals, including more than 138,300 individuals in family units. The majority of all individuals encountered at the Southwest Border over the past three years have been removed, returned or expelled. »In a statement on Saturday, DHS said the data was being « misinterpreted. DHS said that bill would have provided much-needed resources, including additional immigration enforcement agents and officers and additional detention resources. It has also pointed to a sharp drop in arrivals since President Biden signed an executive order limiting asylum at the border in June. DHS also said it has removed over 180,000 noncitizens with criminal convictions since Jan. 2021.CLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF THE BORDER SECURITY CRISISThe Biden administration has prioritized the removal of public safety and national security threats in narrowed priorities it released in 2021, but critics have linked those priorities with a drop in ICE removals.Republicans have blamed the border crisis on the policies of the administration, including rolling back Trump policies that limited « catch and release. »Asked about the increase in the non-detained docket this summer, a White House spokesperson pointed to that bill. »Congressional Republicans had an opportunity to support the fairest and toughest set of reforms in decades, and they chose to put partisan political interests ahead of fixing our immigration system and securing our borders, » the spokesperson said. « Congressional Republicans have proven that they do not care about securing our border because, frankly, if they did, they would have supported the bipartisan agreement. »The data’s release comes as Harris visits the southern border in Arizona and seeks to present herself as tougher on the border than former President Trump, who she blames for the border bill not passing. »Donald Trump tanked a bill to improve border security — just so he can win this election, » she said Friday. « As I have shown throughout my career, I won’t back down from my plan to make our border more secure. »Fox News’ Bill Melugin contributed to this report.

LeBron James likens start of NBA career to Caitlin Clark amid scrutiny: ‘In support of her since day one’

[ad_1]

NBA great LeBron James recently opened up about his « respect » for Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark, adding that he can relate to the pressure the young WNBA star has faced in her first year in the pros. James has previously voiced his support for the former Iowa star during her rookie campaign, but in an interview with « Esquire » this week, the four-time NBA champion offered his perspective on the « scrutiny » she’s faced this season. « I have a great deal of respect for Caitlin Clark, because I know exactly what it means to be drafted, be the face of a franchise, and also get the scrutiny from a lot of people that don’t believe you’re ready for the next jump, don’t believe you’re ready for the big leagues, and just don’t think that you belong. »CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMJames went on to say he’s supported Clark « since day one, » adding that he remembers being in her shoes. « I remember that when I came into the league at eighteen years old how many people doubted me and hoped and prayed that I’d fail. And so, me watching Caitlin and seeing what she’s doing, I’ve been in support of her since day one, because I remember myself going through that, and she has my support 100 percent. She’s a transcendent player. And obviously, we all saw that at Iowa, and I knew that it would translate to the big leagues. And she’s an unbelievable talent. It’s great to watch. »LEBRON JAMES ADDRESSES CAITLIN CLARK CRITICS WITH FOUR-WORD MESSAGE AFTER CAREER NIGHTClark’s first season in the WNBA catapulted her into stardom. Record performances in front of sold out crowds have seen unparalleled growth for the league. The Fever also turned their season around after the All Star break, securing the team’s first playoff appearance since 2016. « Yeah, listen, she has the vision, she has the spirit, she’s infectious, people want to play with her, » James continued. « They’re going to be a really good team, and not too long from now. » James has not shied away from his support of Clark. After Clark scored a career-high 31 points and 12 assists in Indiana’s final regular-season matchup against the Chicago Sky last month, he posted a message on social media addressing the « haters. »At the start of the season, he also credited the league’s surge in popularity to Clark. « The one thing that I love that she’s bringing to her sport: more people want to watch. More people want to tune in. I saw, for the first time, they had a chartered plane. For the first time in their league history, they flew private. That should be celebrated in its own right, » he said on his podcast « Mind the Game » back in May. »That should be celebrated, and it’s because of Caitlin Clark. Don’t get it twisted. Don’t get it f—ed up. Caitlin Clark is the reason why a lot of great things are going to happen for the WNBA. »The Fever’s playoff run came to an early end after losing the first round in two games to the Connecticut Sun. Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Alleged sex worker and john exit NYC brothel 24 hours after police raid it: video

[ad_1]

A long commercial strip in Queens, New York City, has become such a hotbed for open-air prostitution that when police raided a brothel there last week, the same cathouse was open for business again within 24 hours, an astonishing Fox News Digital video shows. Fox News Digital visited the seedy strip of Roosevelt Avenue in Queens – part of which encompasses Democratic Squad Member Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez’s district – to report on the law-breaking behavior in the area and was conducting an interview outside the nearby brothel when an alleged sex worker and her client walked out of the building. The building, a former beauty salon, appears closed due to metal shutter doors covering the storefront, but a makeshift door has been cut out of it. Two CCTV cameras are stationed overhead. AOC’S ‘RED LIGHT’ DISTRICT OVERRUN WITH PROSTITUTES AS LOCALS CALL OUT MIA ‘SQUAD’ MEMBERThe woman, wearing tight gym shorts and a black top, briefly looks at the Fox News Digital camera and then makes a dash towards Roosevelt Avenue with her young client fixing himself and then following closely behind her. The woman in the video was allegedly later seen soliciting sex along with other women around the corner from the Case Street brothel. The alleged sex workers are understood to pick up clients on the busy street and then take them to the brothel around the corner, which leads into a residential neighborhood. The NYPD confirmed that three arrests were made during the Sept. 18 raid on the building. It is unclear why it wasn’t immediately padlocked. The Queens District Attorney’s Office tells Fox News Digital it is in the process of shutting the brothel down and says it understands that the NYPD is separately seeking a « parallel nuisance abatement order against the establishment. »Ramses Frías, a local resident turned activist who was being interviewed as the pair walked out, said he was not surprised that the building was operational again, given that the alleged sex workers advertise their bodies in the open during all hours of the day and night with few repercussions. »This area has been run rampant with prostitution, especially on this corner, » Frías said. « This block itself, it’s just been out of control and the lawlessness continues to happen. This [raid] was done yesterday and as you can see, it looks like it’s still operational. »AOC DISTRICT NEIGHBORHOOD LABELED ‘THIRD WORLD’ AS MIGRANTS CLOG STREETS AND PROSTITUTES OVERRUN EVERY BLOCKWATCH: NEW YORK CITY STREET LINED WITH ALLEGED PROSTITUTES SOLICITING SEXKnown to locals as the « Avenue of the Sweethearts, » residents say the prostitution situation reminds them of the red-light district streets of Bangkok. Additionally, illegal vendors also overrun the sidewalks cooking hot food or selling used clothes  « third world » conditions. On one block along Roosevelt Avenue, Fox News Digital cameras recorded a line of no less than 19 alleged sex workers on the sidewalk. Around the corner, there were at least seven more, and a woman on the next block was witnessed soliciting sex for $60.Frías says that the alleged prostitutes and their pimps continue to flout the law with little repercussions, while many elected leaders do nothing to stop the lawlessness. Prostitution is illegal in New York.In January, the NYPD raided six establishments in the area allegedly engaged in prostitution, which were issued closing orders. The raid was well publicized, with embattled New York City Mayor Eric Adams and local Democratic City Council member Francisco Moya present. However, the Queens District Attorney’s Office confirmed that no arrests were made, saying it was strictly carried out to serve court closure orders of nuisance abatement over which the NYPD has jurisdiction. Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels and a Republican candidate for mayor, slammed it as a « show raid » and said there were no arrests. « They didn’t arrest the johns, prostitutes, madams; they never went after the landlords, and they were back in business the next day, » said Sliwa, who joined Fox News Digital and Frías on a walking tour of the area. « This would never be tolerated in Manhattan. They tolerate it because it’s … a poor and impoverished area in the eyes of many New Yorkers, but that doesn’t give you a reason to allow this to exist. »

Idaho gov praises Boise State’s decision to forfeit women’s volleyball match against team with trans player

[ad_1]

Idaho governor Brad Little commended Boise State for forfeiting its match against San Jose State University on Saturday amid controversy surrounding a transgender member of the women’s volleyball team. Boise State Athletics confirmed the decision in a statement on Saturday. The university did not provide an explanation of the forfeiture. « Boise State volleyball will not play its scheduled match at San José State on Saturday, Sept. 28, » the statement read. « Per Mountain West Conference policy, the Conference will record the match as a forfeit and a loss for Boise State. The Broncos will next compete on Oct. 3 against Air Force. »CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMThe republican governor, who recently signed an executive order directing the State Board of Education to ensure the safeguarding of fairness in women’s sports, released a statement praising the decision. « I applaud @BoiseState for working within the spirit of my Executive Order, the Defending Women’s Sports Act, » his post on X read. « We need to ensure player safety for all of our female athletes and continue the fight for fairness in women’s sports. » Boise State is the second school to opt out of playing against SJSU amid controversy surrounding a member of the women’s volleyball team. Blaire Fleming, a redshirt senior at San Jose State University, plays as an outside and right-side hitter on the women’s volleyball team. Fleming, a transgender athlete, has played three seasons at SJSU after previously playing at Coastal Carolina. BOISE STATE WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL FORFEITS UPCOMING MATCH AGAINST SJSU AMID CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING TRANS PLAYEREarlier this week, one of Fleming’s teammates joined several other female athletes in suing the NCAA for Title IX violations. According to the criminal complaint, Brooke Slusser claimed that she was not aware that Fleming was transgender despite sharing rooms together on team trips. Slusser also expressed safety concerns for opponents playing against Fleming. « Brooke estimates that Fleming’s spikes were traveling upward of 80 mph, which was faster than she had ever seen a woman hit a volleyball, » Slusser’s complaint said, via the Cowboy State Daily. « The girls were doing everything they could to dodge Fleming’s spikes but still could not fully protect themselves. » »One thing that’s important in this case is really the physical safety issues in volleyball, » Slusser’s attorney, Bill Bock, told OutKick. « And that’s what they’re facing in practice every day. So, it’s just a crazy, misguided policy that steals athletic dreams from women and gives them to men, and, at the same time, puts women’s health and safety in danger. »Payton McNabb, a former high school volleyball player from North Carolina, has been among the most outspoken about transgender athletes in the sport. In September 2022, McNabb was injured in a high school volleyball game when a transgender athlete on the opposing team spiked the volleyball and struck her in the face, causing her to fall backward and suffer from a concussion and a neck injury. She continues to suffer from long-term physical and mental injuries caused by the incident. Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Network evening newscasts barely mention new ICE report on 425,000 criminal migrants free in U.S.

[ad_1]

« NBC Nightly News » was the only prime time network news program on Friday night to report on bombshell new Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) data revealing that over 400,000 illegals immigrants convicted of crimes are currently free in the United States. Both ABC’s « World News Tonight, » and the « CBS Evening News » failed to mention any of the findings that ICE presented in a letter to Congress this week that was reported by a variety of other outlets on Friday. They simply covered Vice President Kamala Harris’ trip to Arizona’s border with Mexico and touted her policy proposals for immigration.Only NBC News’ evening newscast mentioned the letter, though it didn’t cover the entire scope of the findings – only reporting that « more than 13,000 migrants previously convicted of homicide are currently free inside the U.S. »CLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF THE BORDER SECURITY CRISISFox News Digital reported on Friday that ICE sent a letter to Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, and other members of Congress this week, showing that as of July 2024, there are 425,431 convicted criminal migrants – and 222,141 with pending criminal charges – who have crossed the U.S. southern border illegally and who are awaiting removal from the country.According to the report, none of these criminal migrants are being held in detention, even those who have received their final orders of removal or those undergoing removal procedures.CLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF MEDIA AND CULTUREOf these 425,431 convicted criminals, 62,231 have been convicted of assault, 14,301 convicted of burglary, 56,533 have drug convictions and 13,099 have been convicted of homicide. An additional 2,521 have kidnapping convictions and 15,811 have sexual assault convictions. »NBC Nightly News » briefly pointed out the existence of the letter and the more than 13,000 illegal immigrants convicted of murder still free in the country, though it did not mention the nearly half a million other criminal migrants aren’t currently detained in the U.S.The other two networks failed to mention the bombshell findings in their prime time nightly news segments on Friday altogether.ICE NON-DETAINED DOCKET EXPLODES TO 7.4M CASES »CBS Evening News » made no mention of the letter but focused on the dueling immigration rhetoric of the Harris and Trump presidential campaigns. The network noted that Harris has « promoted herself as tough on cross-border crime, » and reported that « foot traffic across the entire U.S.-Mexico border is down in recent months » thanks to both Mexico’s immigration crackdowns and the Biden-Harris’ administration’s policies. ABC’s « World News Tonight » took the same approach to covering the border issue, noting Harris’ trip to Arizona this week and how she is trying to offer his vision of border security against former President Trump’s.The network reported that asylum restrictions enacted by the Biden-Harris administration in June has led to a « drastic decrease in the encounters across the border. » It also noted Harris’ border policy mantra that « we can be a nation of laws and also a nation of immigrants. »Trump slammed Harris’ border policies following the release of ICE’s data, telling supporters at a campaign event in Michigan on Friday, « We’re like a dumping ground. Non-citizens, convicted criminals from all over the world are right now at-large in the United States of America. »

Monosodium glutamate, or MSG, gets a fresh look from experts

[ad_1]

Monosodium glutamate, or MSG — a food additive that is often found in Asian cuisine — has had something of a negative reputation over the last 60 years. Some food experts insist that’s unfair. « To talk about MSG is to tell the history of umami, the fifth basic taste, » Christopher Koetke, a Chicago-based corporate executive chef at Ajinomoto Health & Nutrition North America, Inc., told Fox News Digital.Umami, said Koetke, « was first identified by Tokyo scientist Dr. Kikunae Ikeda in 1908 while enjoying a bowl of traditional Japanese seaweed broth called konbu dashi. » CHICORY AN ALL-NATURAL ALTERNATIVE TO CHEMICALLY DECAFFEINATED COFFEE, SAYS HOMESTEADERThis soup, said Koetke, had a distinct taste other than sweet, sour, bitter or salty — so he dubbed it « umami. » In Japanese, umami means « essence of deliciousness, » said Koetke. « After days of studying various seaweeds, he found that the taste of umami could be attributed to glutamate, a naturally occurring amino acid, which is also present in the human body and in many foods, » he said. Ikeda then invented what would now be called MSG by combining one part glutamate with one part sodium, said Koetke. « By 1909, MSG was patented and commercialized as AJI-NO-MOTO®, to become the world’s first umami seasoning, » he said. GENERAL TSO NEVER ATE ‘HIS’ OWN CHICKEN, PLUS 4 OTHER FUN FACTS ABOUT THE CHINESE AMERICAN CLASSICIt is added to foods in recipes much like salt and other spices, and MSG is naturally found in many foods, including tomatoes and mushrooms. But by the 1960s, opinions on MSG began to change, said Koetke. In April 1968, someone wrote a letter to the editor of The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), claiming to have « Chinese Restaurant Syndrome. » « The letter’s author described symptoms like weakness and flushing experienced after eating at a Chinese restaurant, speculating that these symptoms may have been due to any number of ingredients in the meal, including MSG, » said Koetke. This letter sparked a fear of MSG, said Koetke, which, coupled with « anti-Asian xenophobia – at a high in the 1960s » – resulted in many Chinese restaurants advertising they had « no MSG » in their products to stay in business. CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER »Since then, extensive research has verified MSG’s safety, and sensitivities to the ingredient have never been consistently replicated in double-blind, placebo-controlled trials, » he said. Fox News Digital reached out to The New England Journal of Medicine for comment about « Chinese Restaurant Syndrome » and MSG.The change in view on MSG is typical of « our world of nutrition research and trying to understand exactly how our diet influences our health, » Linda Van Horn, PhD, RDN, a professor at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. (See the video at the top of this article.)WOMAN MAKES DOZENS OF MAC AND CHEESE RECIPES IN SEARCH OF ‘ONE THAT SLAPS' »There have been tremendous breakthroughs over the last two decades related to understanding more clearly the relationship between food additives and their impact, not only on how we feel, but some of the more objective data related to the microbiome, » she told Fox News Digital in a Zoom interview. »In other words, [there is] more objective information that allows us to better understand these relationships between diet nutrients and their impact on our health, » she said. MEET THE AMERICAN WHO POPULARIZED CHINESE FOOD IN THE US: IMMIGRANT CHEF JOYCE CHENMSG has considerably less sodium than table salt, noted Van Horn, something the food industry is « very interested in » amid a push to « reduce the amount of sodium in the diet and look for ways to enhance flavor, » she said. »We eat far too much sodium in our diet, which relates to the No. 1 burden of disease, which is hypertension, » she said. Van Horn stopped short of giving MSG a green light, saying that « it’s really not clear at this point » if the additive is safe for humans in unlimited amounts. »There really isn’t a definitive answer when it comes to, ‘Is it or is it not something that should be regulated, reduced and otherwise prevented in terms of our overall diet,' » she said. »So as usual, I think we come away with the understanding that this is a research work in progress. » The consumption of some MSG, she said, « probably isn’t all that harmful. » »However, I would continue to remain » aware of how much MSG is being consumed, she said. For more Lifestyle articles, visit www.foxnews.com/lifestyle »The bottom line is: Enjoy Asian cuisine, » said Van Horn. « Limit the intake of sodium in general and be cautious in regard to individual use of MSG beyond some of the herbs and spices. »

Beware of the new sneaky parking QR code scam

[ad_1]

Ever scanned a QR code to pay for parking and thought, « Wow, that was easy? » Well, hold onto your smartphones because we’re about to tell you about a sneaky new scam that’s giving parkers everywhere a major headache. You might think you’re pretty sharp when it comes to spotting online trickery, but these fraudsters are seriously upping their game with QR codes.GET SECURITY ALERTS, EXPERT TIPS – SIGN UP FOR KURT’S NEWSLETTER – THE CYBERGUY REPORT HERERemember when QR codes were just those funky square patterns you’d see on product packaging? Well, they’ve come a long way, baby. These days, they’re everywhere — from restaurant menus to, you guessed it, parking meters. But while they’ve made our lives easier, they’ve also opened up a new avenue for scammers to exploit.SMALL SIZE, BIG CLEAN: THE WORLD’S SMALLEST DISHWASHERDON’T FALL PREY TO THIS ELECTION SEASON’S CRAFTIEST SCAMS  Picture this. You’re headed to the beautiful beaches of Redondo, California. You find a spot, stroll up to the meter and see a QR code for easy payment. Convenient, right? Not so fast. In a brazen move, scammers plastered fake QR codes on about 150 parking meters along the Esplanade and Riviera Village area. These phony codes were strategically placed right next to the legitimate ParkMobile and PayByPhone labels. Talk about hiding in plain sight.ILLEGAL MOVIE DOWNLOADS COULD BE HIDING DANGEROUS NEW MALWAREHead down the coast to San Clemente, and you’ll find a similar story. One unsuspecting driver fell victim to this digital deception. He scanned what he thought was a legitimate code, only to find himself on a fraudulent website. Within minutes, his wife’s credit card company was calling about unauthorized charges. Talk about a parking nightmare. This scam isn’t isolated to California. Law enforcement agencies across the country are reporting similar scams, now dubbed « quishing » (QR code phishing). These scams typically target high-traffic areas and aim to collect personal and financial information from unsuspecting victims.ALERT: 106 MILLION AMERICANS EXPOSED AS MASSIVE DATA LEAK ROCKS BACKGROUND CHECK FIRMHOW TO AVOID BECOMING A MOVING SCAM VICTIM  These scammers are using QR code technology to pull off their tricks. Here’s their playbook:The fake sticker: The scammers create QR code stickers that look just like the real deal. The lookalike URL: The crooks set up websites with names eerily similar to legitimate parking payment sites. For example, PoyByPhone instead of PayByPhone. Spot the difference? It’s not easy. The data grab: Once you’re on the scammer’s site, they ask for your location and payment info, just like a real parking app would. The quick getaway: With your data in hand, the thieves start making unauthorized charges faster than you can say « parking ticket. »PROTECT YOURSELF FROM TECH SUPPORT SCAMS 1. Scrutinize the URL: Before entering any information, carefully examine the web address for any irregularities or misspellings.2. Use official apps: Whenever possible, use the official city parking app instead of scanning QR codes.3. Inspect for tampering: Be wary of QR codes that appear to be afterthoughts or look like they’ve been added on top of existing signage.4. Consider alternative payment methods: Sometimes, using coins or a credit card directly at the meter is the safest option.5. Keep your device updated: Regularly update your phone’s operating system and security software to protect against the latest threats.6. Avoid public Wi-Fi for payments: Public Wi-Fi networks are often unsecured, making them prime hunting grounds for cybercriminals. When making parking payments, use your cellular data connection instead. Remember, it’s better to use a bit more mobile data than to risk your financial information falling into the wrong hands. If you must use public Wi-Fi, consider using a VPN to encrypt your connection and protect your data from potential hackers. For best VPN software, see my expert review of the best VPNs for browsing the web privately on your Windows, Mac, Android & iOS devices.7. Be wary of unsolicited messages: Ignore links sent via email, text or social media claiming to be for parking payments. Instead, manually enter the official parking website or use the city’s app.8. Use secure scanning methods: Your smartphone’s built-in camera is typically sufficient for scanning QR codes. Avoid downloading third-party QR code scanning apps, which could potentially contain malware.9. Verify payment requests: If you receive a QR code for payment via email, don’t rush to pay. Contact the company directly through their official channels to confirm the request.10. Don’t click on suspicious links: Be cautious about clicking on any links that appear in emails, texts or social media messages regarding parking payments. Scammers often use these methods to direct you to fake websites that may look legitimate but are designed to steal your personal and financial information. The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have strong antivirus software installed on all your devices. North Korea expands list of crimes punishable by death: report

[ad_1]

North Korea is expanding its list of crimes punishable by death, according to reports.Supreme leader Kim Jong Un’s regime expanded the list of offenses warranting the death penalty from 11 to 16 via revisions of criminal law, according to Yonhap News Agency.New offenses warranting execution as a punishment include: anti-state propaganda and agitation acts, illegal manufacturing, and the illicit use of weapons are included in the new codes. KIM JONG UN PROMISES TO ‘STEADILY STRENGTHEN’ NORTH KOREA’S ‘NUCLEAR FORCE’The legal modifications were codified via multiple amendments between May 2022 and December 2023, according to a report from the Korea Institute for National Unification (KINU). The tightening of the criminal code is intended to strengthen the Kim regime’s grip on the population through its continued monopolization of the marketplace and military. Earlier this month, North Korea promised to refine its weapons development and strengthen its nuclear capabilities. NORTH KOREA’S KIM JONG UN REPORTEDLY ORDERED DOZENS OF OFFICIALS EXECUTED AFTER DEADLY FLOODSKim Jong Un made the comments Monday at a state event celebrating the country’s 76th anniversary. »The obvious conclusion is that the nuclear force of the DPRK and the posture capable of properly using it for ensuring the state’s right to security in any time should be more thoroughly perfected, » the dictator said. »DPRK » is an abbreviation for North Korea’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.Kim Jong Un warned that the United States’ increased involvement in the region has forced the regime to pursue more powerful weapons as a deterrence mechanism. »The DPRK will steadily strengthen its nuclear force capable of fully coping with any threatening acts imposed by its nuclear-armed rival states and redouble its measures and efforts to make all the armed forces of the state, including the nuclear force, fully ready for combat, » the supreme leader said. The 14th Supreme People’s Assembly, the unicameral legislative body of the country, amended the national constitution last year to enshrine nuclear weaponization as a core principle.

‘Not American’: Rural and urban voters in crucial battleground state alarmed by violent political rhetoric

[ad_1]

During a swing through Central Pennsylvania, Fox News Digital spoke with several voters in urban and rural areas, and got their take on the effects of charged political rhetoric among other topics. In Wakefield, the rural community just north of the Maryland line, Marsha Peterson co-owns Peterson’s Grocery Outlet with her husband.Asked about the level of political rhetoric, Peterson said the left has spent years on a drumbeat of telling Americans former President Trump « is a danger and he must be stopped. » »Then, you see people on social media laughing and saying they wouldn’t have missed [shooting] him, » she said. « They want words to matter – but only the right’s words. » SHAPIRO BLASTED FOR SIGNING MISSILE ALONGSIDE ZELENSKYY IN BIDEN’S HOMETOWNCloser to home, Peterson said the affordability crisis has been a major issue for both her and her customers. »We run a little mom-and-pop little grocery store, and we absolutely see the difference in price increases from one administration to the next, even with COVID [considerations], things were not this high, » she said.Outside a large flea market off US-222, Eric Beezer said the issues at hand have driven him to run for state office in Lancaster City. The Republican said he originally was facing off with 34-year incumbent State Rep. Mike Sturla, but noted the senior Democrat suddenly withdrew from the race in August. He said he hopes his top issues of affordability, housing and keeping taxes low will resonate with voters in the otherwise heavily-Democratic stronghold. »Lancaster’s issues are the same as most of the country, » Beezer said.Sam and Kate Mylin of Willow Street, Pa. offered their take while visiting Quarryville, saying the negativity in politics has to stop. »Especially people and politicians saying [Trump] is a threat and he needs to be taken out and stuff like that, » said Sam, a retired artist. « That’s is wrong. That’s just totally wrong. That’s not American. »Meanwhile, Kate Mylin questioned the veracity of claims inflation is going down. She noted disparities in costs as of late.CRISS-CROSSING PA TO REGISTER VOTERS, SCOTT PRESLER SAYS HE’S ‘MOVING THE NEEDLE’ TO FLIP COUNTIES RED »Gas goes down. But then your eggs are $5 for a dozen? Give me a break. »Sam Mylin added he wants to hear the truth from politicians as to whether our troops truly are not at war. »We have more wars right now than we ever had. And supposedly the troops aren’t in a combat zone, but I see that they are. And it’s all lies, man. It is. It’s all lies coming from the left. And it’s really dishonest itself, » he said. »The other thing is the affordability of housing for people is ridiculous. So something’s got to change, » he added, noting he and his wife are supporting Trump.Tim Gochenaur and Michelle Williams of rural Christiana traveled west into East Drumore Township to visit the Solanco fairgrounds. Both believed political rhetoric played a part in Trump being targeted twice for assassination. »They’re inciting these people, » Gochenaur said. « Somebody might be off a little bit to start with and that pushes them in that directions. » Asked about electoral fairness, Williams said the tabulations will be « as fair as they allow it to be – the system should be fair. » »The way that the laws are put in place, it’s meant for integrity. And that’s a founding principle of our of our country — for there to be an appropriate and proper vote. But if that is not carried out, then it will not be a fair election. »On the other end of Harrisburg Pike, in the namesake capital city, a man who goes by « Minister Fifty » spoke out while waiting for a bus by the Hilton hotel downtown. »Is that a rhetorical question? » Minister Fifty responded when asked about political rhetoric inciting malign behavior. »Common sense tells us, of course, it’s having an effect – any type of unsavory communication is never going to be helpful, » he said. »So when we resort to things other than the issues and then we get animated in a dark way toward other people or non-issues, then things get clouded and things get deflected and then we lose sight of what the true goal is. » »We also have an opportunity to show the world and everyone else that America is built on decency… » Minister Fifty countered. He added he believes the election will indeed be fair, calling the national structure « too big to fail. »Lisa, of Harrisburg, said she is a proud « Black lady for Donald J. Trump, » in her words, said that when it comes to political rhetoric, it is important to « maintain a blessed attitude » and remember « the golden rule – do unto others as they would do unto you. » »Both sides can really use just more tolerance towards the other side, » said Lisa, who declined to appear on camera but agreed to have her comments recorded audially. »I’m rooting for the best candidate to win, » she said.Pam Hower, a former Republican who was out enjoying a twilight trip along the Susquehanna River trail, said she became disaffected with the GOP over its « crazy rhetoric » but added there may be something to be said on that front on both sides. She said Trump has « hurt a lot of people » with claims of migrants eating pets in Ohio, and – as a person with a disability – was horrified at a situation from Trump’s first bid wherein he was accused of mocking a New York Times reporter who suffered from a congenital skeletal condition.Trump, however, denied the claim, saying he didn’t know of Serge Kovaleski’s disability, and only effected his « groveling » manner in the situation he had been describing.Hower said disability issues as well as Medicare and Medicaid solvency are key to her vote. She added that while she has gone hunting with family members and grew up around legal firearms, she disagrees with the availability of semiautomatic rifles given the amount of school and public shootings in recent years. »My daughter is a speech therapist in an elementary school. I’m terrified for her. And I know that that has an impact on the way she thinks going into the schools. And I don’t want her to have to be afraid every day, » she said. »I don’t have a problem with guns because I grew up with them. I have a problem with assault rifles. I have a problem with access to them, » she said. When asked about the housing crisis, Hower said one aspect of it is being missed by the media and the candidates. As a person with a disability, only about 5% of new housing is required to be wheelchair accessible, she said. »So we are in a critical stage of lack of housing in this country. In Pennsylvania, it’s really terrible. But across the country for people with disabilities [as well]. » »I’m hoping for Kamala. I’m doing everything I can because [Trump] scares the heck out of me, » she said.Rudolph of Harrisburg said virulent political rhetoric is « typical. »CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP »I think each year that the antics get dirtier. And so what are we fighting for? And I really don’t understand the whole process because everybody knows — the smart people know anyway — that the popular vote don’t elect the president. It’s the electoral college, » he said.As for some of the threats on Trump, Rudolph suggested some aspects may have been « staged » because the Republican is a « good marketer. »However, Rudolph also praised some of Trump’s work in his first term: »He made us stand up to China. And so he has some good ideas. But his rhetoric is causing division among the people. And that’s not a good thing because, you know, I’ve got White friends. I got Black friends, I got Green friends, I mean, » he riffed. »Nobody is going to trust anybody, » he said. »I’m going [with] the Democratic ticket. It is the lesser of two evils. »Fox News Digital’s Matteo Cina contributed to this report.

Herzi Halevi said of the elimination of Nasrallah. The IDF attacked the Iran-backed terror proxy’s headquarters in southern Beirut, revealing that they had targeted Nasrallah. A Hezbollah media relations official initially claimed he was « fine and well, » but the Israelis confirmed his death early the next morning. At least two other people were killed and dozens were wounded, Lebanon’s health ministry said.NETANYAHU CALLS MIDEAST CONFLICTS CHOICE BETWEEN ‘BLESSING OR A CURSE,’ WARNS ABOUT ISRAEL’S ‘LONG ARM' »The IDF announces that yesterday (Friday), September 27th, 2024, Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Hezbollah terrorist organization and one of its founders, was eliminated by the IDF, together with Ali Karki, the Commander of Hezbollah’s Southern Front, and additional Hezbollah commanders, » the IDF said in a statement. »Following precise intelligence from the IDF and Israeli security establishment, IAF fighter jets conducted a targeted strike on the Central Headquarters of the Hezbollah terrorist organization, which was located underground embedded under a residential building in the area of Dahieh in Beirut, the statement added. « The strike was conducted while Hezbollah’s senior chain of command were operating from the headquarters and advancing terrorist activities against the citizens of the State of Israel. »The IDF said Nasrallah was responsible for the murder of many Israeli civilians and soldiers, as well as the planning and execution of thousands of terrorist activities around the world. The IDF said Nasrallah was Hezbollah’s central decision-maker and the strategic leader. On Friday, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin told reporters, « The United States was not involved in Israel’s operation, » noting there was « no advance warning, » from the Israelis.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cut short his trip to New York following his speech to the United Nations General Assembly where he warned Hezbollah about Israel’s right to go on the offensive. »As long as Hezbollah chooses the path of war, Israel has no choice, and Israel has every right to remove this threat and return our citizens to their home safely and that’s exactly what we’re doing, » he said. After his speech the prime minister’s office released a picture showing the Israeli leader in his New York hotel approving the operation against the terror chief.ISRAEL TARGETS HEZBOLLAH LEADER NASRALLAH IN STRIKE ON BEIRUT HEADQUARTERSThe IDF said it is continuing to strike terrorist infrastructure sites belonging to Hezbollah. »Since last night, the IDF struck over 140 Hezbollah terror targets, including launchers aimed at Israeli civilians, buildings in which weapons were stored, strategic weaponry, weapons production facilities, and additional terrorist infrastructure sites, some embedded underneath residential buildings in the area of Beirut, » the IDF said. »The IDF is continuing to operate to degrade and dismantle Hezbollah’s terrorist infrastructure and capabilities, » it added.Rich Goldberg, a senior adviser at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told Fox News Digital that Nasrallah’s death would prove a significant victory for Israel due to his close ties to Tehran. »People don’t appreciate that Nasrallah took over for Soleimani as senior strategist for Khamenei, » Goldberg explained. »Nasrallah had operational control of Lebanon and Syria: This is not just a strategic game-changer for Hezbollah, Lebanon and Syria, it’s a strategic game-changer for Tehran, » Goldberg explained. « We should assume that the IRGC is effectively in charge behind the scenes. Khamenei clearly had made a decision in recent weeks to avoid inviting Israeli strikes inside Iran. » »The calculus that led to that decision hasn’t changed, » Goldberg added. « Should Khamenei decide he’s feeling lucky tonight and order a direct attack, we should reset all our assumptions about what Israel is willing to do inside Iran. »

Drinking alcohol is linked to six types of cancer, experts say: ‘It’s toxic’

[ad_1]

It’s long been known that no amount of alcohol is good for the body — and now new research spotlights the potential harm it can cause.More than 5% of all cancer cases are caused by drinking alcohol, according to the Cancer Progress Report 2024 from the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).Among the modifiable risk factors for cancer, alcohol is the third biggest, behind obesity (7.6% of cases) and cigarette smoking (19.3%).TO REDUCE CANCER RISK, SKIP THE ALCOHOL, REPORT SUGGESTS »Excessive levels of alcohol consumption increase the risk for six different types of cancer, including certain types of head and neck cancer, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, and breast, colorectal, liver and stomach cancers, » said Rajarshi Sengupta, PhD, lead author of the AACR Cancer Progress Report 2024, in a statement sent to Fox News Digital. »Further, research shows that alcohol intake at an early age can increase the risk of cancer later in life. »Based on these findings, limiting or eliminating alcohol can reduce the risk of developing alcohol-related cancers by 8% and the risk of all cancers by 4%, the report noted. There has been a « roller coaster of information » about whether alcohol is harmful, according to addiction psychiatrist Dr. Adam Scioli of Caron Treatment Centers in Pennsylvania. »There have even been reports for years that it could be beneficial for one’s health — but we know now that alcohol ingestion is one of the modifiable risk factors for cancer, » Scioli, who is not affiliated with AACR, told Fox News Digital.‘DOES SMARTPHONE EXPOSURE CAUSE BRAIN CANCER?’: ASK A DOCTORAround 75,000 Americans each year are diagnosed with a cancer that is linked in some way to alcohol use, according to Scioli. The more someone drinks — both in volume and frequency — the higher the risk, he warned. »Alcohol is a toxin, » Scioli said. « We’ve long known that it impacts any number of organs, essentially starting with the brain and working its way down to the colorectal system. »Moderate alcohol use is defined as one drink or less in one day for women. For men, it is two drinks or fewer per day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). »Drinking alcohol in moderation may increase your overall risks of death and chronic disease, » the agency stated on its website. »Even low levels of alcohol use (less than one drink per day) can raise the risk of certain cancers. »Scioli agreed, emphasizing that « we can definitely say there’s no added health benefit to ingestion of alcohol. » »The line between safety and danger is debatable, and is different for each person. »While risk factors like tobacco use are widely known, public awareness about the link between alcohol and cancer is still low, according to Sengupta. Most Americans (51%) are not aware that alcohol increases cancer risk, per AACR data. »It’s been flying under the radar for far too long — especially given the number of Americans who have met the criteria for alcohol use disorder, which is around 29 million Americans in 2023, » said Scioli. The good news, according to Scioli, is that with modifiable risk factors like alcohol, reducing the intake decreases the risk. CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTERAs the report stated, those who are successful in decreasing their drinking or abstaining below those moderate risk levels will see a risk reduction in overall cancers, he noted. »We need to do a much better job of making the public aware of the risks inherent in drinking — particularly moderate to heavy drinking, » Scioli said. « And we need to make the public aware that there are mechanisms by which they can access help if they are unable to moderate their drinking or quit on their own. »For more Health articles, visit www.foxnews.com/healthTo help raise awareness, Sengupta of the AACR called for public messaging campaigns, « such as cancer-specific warning labels displayed on alcoholic beverages. »Along with that, she told Fox News Digital, « effective clinical strategies that reduce or eliminate alcohol consumption must be considered to reduce the burden of alcohol-related cancers. »

Virginia Tech’s walk-off Hail Mary touchdown reversed after review; No. 7 Miami avoids upset

[ad_1]

Virginia Tech thought they upset No. 7 Miami on the road, but victory was, almost quite literally, snatched from their hands. With three seconds left and down four points, Hokies quarterback Kyron Drones aired it out to the back of the end zone toward a swarm of both Hokies and Hurricanes. With the naked eye, it was tough to tell who initially came down with the ball, as seven players leaped for it. After some jostling, a Miami defensive back ran away with the pigskin, and celebrations began.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMHowever, the ruling on the field was actually a touchdown caught by Da’Quan Felton. But, there was a lengthy review, and officials reversed the call, giving the Hurricanes a 38-34 victory and putting the Hokies in absolute disbelief. »It came down to half an inch, » Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal said to the ESPN broadcast following the game, admitting his team played « sloppy. »Virginia Tech got on the board first with a touchdown on their first drive, but the Hurricanes answered by finding the end zone on back-to-back drives themselves. However, the Hokies scored 20 unanswered points to take a 27-17 lead early in the third quarter.HURRICANE HELENE FORCES BRONCOS TO PRACTICE ON INDOOR TENNIS COURTS IN WEST VIRGINIA RESORTMiami scored a touchdown to cut their deficit to three late in the quarter, but Virginia Tech found the end zone again to go back up 10. An Arkansas couple was arrested after allegedly attempting to sell their two-month-old baby to a man at a campground for $1,000 and a six-pack of beer.Darien Urban, 21, and Shalene Ehlers, 20, face felony charges of endangering the welfare of a minor and attempting to accept compensation for relinquishment of a minor. The Benton County Sheriff’s Office said it received a call on Sept. 21 from the manager of the Hide Away Campground reporting that the couple « tried to give up the baby for a 6-pack of beer and then wanted $1,000 for the baby, » according to an affidavit, WREG reported. The pair signed a letter granting custody of their child before handing the boy over to someone else, and even included a disclaimer that the child could not be returned.HONDURAN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT CHARGED IN ALLEGED DUI CRASH THAT KILLED CHILDREN’S RESPIRATORY THERAPIST »I, Darien Urban and Shalene Ehlers are signing our rights over to Cody Nathaniel Martin of our baby boy [redacted] for $1,000 on 09/21/2024, » the letter reads. « Disclaimer: After signing this there will be no changing yall two’s minds and to never contact again. »Multiple witnesses corroborated the attempted adoption, according to the affidavit. The child was found in need of medical attention when a deputy arrived at the scene. The deputy called emergency medical services to transport the baby to a hospital for evaluation for signs of neglect. The child is in the care of the Arkansas Department of Human Services.A witness said she discovered a strong ammonia and fecal odor coming from the baby, who had a dirty diaper. The witness changed the baby’s diaper and noticed severe diaper rash, blisters and swelling, which she took pictures of to document the injuries.A deputy also reportedly obtained cellphone video of Urban and Ehlers signing the contract with the man attempting to purchase their baby, according to the affidavit, Law & Crime reported.Witnesses reported that a resident of the campground, Ricky Crawford, had earlier visited Urban and Ehlers and offered to take the baby for the night in exchange for several cans of beer, according to court documents. This was after Ehler allegedly approached another couple’s camper and asked them for beer, as she often does. But when the couple declined, Crawford offered beer in exchange for keeping the baby overnight.Crawford, who appeared heavily intoxicated during his interview with a deputy, said he was concerned about the baby’s well-being and wanted to take the child out of Urban’s and Ehler’s care for the night, an offer they agreed to. »He asked if he could have the baby overnight and provided Urban and Ehlers with several cans of beer in exchange, » the affidavit reads. « Urban and Ehlers agreed and gave the baby along with a diaper bag to Crawford. He then brought the baby to Martin at another camper at the campground. Ehlers and Urban then came to the same camper and spoke to Martin and Crawford before signing the letter. » »Based on the totality of the investigation, it is believed both Urban and Ehler created a substantial risk of death or serious physical injury by abandoning their minor child initially with an obviously intoxicated male and ultimately with someone they did not know, » the affidavit reads.Martin told deputies he had drawn up the contract and while no money had been exchanged yet, he planned to bring the couple a $1,000 check on Sept. 23. »[Urban and Ehlers] reported Crawford had come to the camper and requested to take the baby for the night, » according to the affidavit. « They stated they agreed and gave the baby to Crawford. They stated they then discussed it and went to the camper where the baby was and spoke to Martin. »TENNESSEE PAIR CHARGED WITH CHILD ABUSE FOR LOCKING AUTISTIC CHILD IN STORAGE BIN AT UNSANITARY HOME »They stated they offered to surrender the baby to Martin in exchange for $1,000 in cash, » it added. « They stated Martin created an agreement that they videotaped to ensure it was legal and they planned to ‘legalize’ it on Monday. They both stated they then left on the understanding the baby was given to Martin in exchange for $1,000 to be collected on Monday. »Martin said he spoke to the mother about her reason for the potential surrendering of her child. « Martin stated she said it was not working having three dogs and a baby, » the affidavit reads.Urban was released on a $50,000 bond while Ehlers remains in custody in the Benton County Jail on a $30,000 bail.Last year, Urban created a GoFundMe in which he said he and Ehlers were struggling financially after the birth of their first child.

NC gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson hospitalized following ‘incident’ at campaign event

[ad_1]

North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson was hospitalized following an « incident » at a campaign event on Friday evening, Fox News Digital has confirmed. It happened while Robinson was attending the Mayberry Truck Show in Mt. Airy, North Carolina. « Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson was treated at Northern Regional Hospital for second-degree burns. He is in good spirits, appreciates the outpouring of well wishes, and is excited to return to the campaign trail as scheduled first thing tomorrow morning, » Mike Lonergan, Robinson’s campaign communications director told Fox News Digital. It’s unclear exactly how Robinson was burned.NC GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE MARK ROBINSON HIRES TRUMP-FRIENDLY LAWYER TO INVESTIGATE PORN WEBSITE ALLEGATIONSRobinson, the current Republican lieutenant governor running against Democratic state Attorney General Josh Stein to replace Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper in the battleground state, was recently accused of making controversial comments on a porn website. Robinson denies the allegations. He hired an attorney who previously worked for former President Trump. The Binnall Law Group from northern Virginia is investigating claims raised in a CNN report published earlier this week. « Normally, something like this, an investigation, you know, run by the Department of Justice and the FBI would take months or years, » Binnall previously told Fox News Digital. « We can’t do that in this case because the voters need an answer before the election. And so we are going to move very quickly and still give them a very fulsome report. » « He absolutely denies saying any of the things that are in the CNN piece, » Binnall said of Robinson. « What my investigation is going to do is we are going to follow the facts. We are going to investigate this strenuously. We are going to leave no stone unturned. We’re going to be very, very aggressive. And the citizens of North Carolina deserve nothing less than a full investigation of this matter, which is what we are going to do. »BATTLEGROUND STATE REPUBLICAN DENIES INVOLVEMENT IN PORN SCANDAL, DISMISSES IT AS ‘TABLOID TRASH’The CNN report surfaced comments Robinson allegedly made more than a decade ago on a porn site messaging board, including describing himself as a « black NAZI; » saying he enjoyed transgender pornography; saying that he preferred Hitler to then-President Barack Obama in 2012; and criticizing the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. as « worse than a maggot. » Robinson has denied saying those words, but Republicans have begun to distance themselves from the candidate, who, if elected, would be North Carolina’s first Black governor. Trump did not mention Robinson, who he endorsed before the March primary and has spoken at other Trump events, during the Republican presidential nominee’s campaign rally in Wilmington, North Carolina, Saturday. « The allegations against me are outright lies, fabricated to distract voters from Josh Stein’s disastrous record, » Robinson previously said in a statement to Fox News Digital regarding the investigation. « The great people of North Carolina deserve the truth, and I am fully committed to ensuring they get it with complete transparency. »Fox News Digital’s Danielle Wallace contributed to this report.
