Las protestas de la comunidad internacional por la guerra en Gaza cada vez están cogiendo más dimensión. Con las acampadas de los estudiantes en las universidades se ha abierto la veda a multitud de proclamas y esloganes a favor del pueblo palestino. Pero uno de ellos destaca especialmente debido a su magnitud histórica: ‘From the river to de sea Palestine will be free’ (Desde el río hasta el mar Palestina será libre). Este eslogan es el que se está exhibiendo en uno de los seminarios y conferencias del museo Reina Sofía en solidaridad con Palestina. «Ante la situación de emergencia que atraviesa Gaza desde octubre de 2023, el Museo Reina Sofía, en colaboración con TEJA. Red de espacios culturales en apoyo a las situaciones de emergencia, organiza un programa especial en solidaridad con Palestina como grito al cese de la guerra y el genocidio en la región del Máshreq», dice la programación, que comenzó este miércoles y se extenderá hasta el próximo 14 de junio. El fragmento ‘desde el río hasta el mar Palestina será libre’ se popularizó en los años 60 entre los activistas y los intelectuales palestinos para pedir la libertad tras convertirse en refugiados por la guerra de 1948. Aproximadamente 700.000 palestinos huyeron o fueron expulsados de sus hogares por el Ejército israelí. Los miembros de la Organización de Liberación de Palestina (OLP), fundada en 1964, comenzó a instaurar esta frase de una «Palestina libre» desde el río Jordán hasta el mar Mediterráneo en todas las conferencias y reuniones que tenían con representantes de otros países del mundo . Khaled Meshal , el entonces líder del ala política del grupo terrorista Hamás, adaptó este eslogan en un discurso de 2012 para celebrar el 25º aniversario de la fundación, que se formó en 1987. Dijo textualmente «Palestina es nuestra desde el río hasta el mar y desde el sur hasta el norte». Tanto para los palestinos como para los israelíes el término «Palestina libre» tiene diferentes interpretaciones. Para Israel este lema es utilizado por «aquellos que piden la eliminación de Israel», es decir, la destrucción del Estado judío entre el río Jordán y el Mar Mediterráneo.
