Thursday briefing: What the Grenfell inquiry reveals about the incompetence and dishonesty that led to the fire

[ad_1]

In today’s newsletter: Sir Martin Moore-Bick’s report lays out how to avoid a similar disaster from happening again. But the bereaved want to more than recommendations – they want prosecutions• Sign up here for our daily newsletter, First EditionGood morning. More than seven years after the deaths of 72 people in the Grenfell Tower fire, the report of the public inquiry into the causes was finally published yesterday – and it forms a devastating verdict on the incompetence, dishonesty and greed that made the disaster possible.Sir Martin Moore-Bick’s report paints a horrifying picture of failures in the construction industry, the council, regulators and central government. It prompted apologies from Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak on behalf of consecutive governments, and demands from the families of the victims for changes that they say are “already three decades too late”.UK politics | Robert Jenrick is leading the race to replace Rishi Sunak as Conservative party leader after a first round of MP voting that placed the former migration minister top and eliminated Priti Patel. Jenrick won the support of 28 of his parliamentary colleagues, ahead of Kemi Badenoch, who won 22 votes.Education | Suspensions and exclusions from schools in England went up by more than a fifth in the past year, according to analysis of live attendance data. A new report detailing the change raises concerns about children being shifted out of mainstream education into alternative provision.Ukraine | Dmytro Kuleba has resigned as Ukraine’s foreign minister as part of a wide-ranging government reshuffle designed to give what Volodymyr Zelenskiy has called “new strength” to the government and the country.Israel-Gaza war | The UN children’s agency has said that a polio vaccination campaign to inoculate more than 640,000 children in Gaza is surpassing expectations at the end of the first phase of the programme. Describing the campaign as a “rare bright spot” in the war, Unicef said 189,000 children had been reached so far.Social media | YouTube is to stop recommending videos to teenagers that idealise specific fitness levels, body weights or physical features, after experts warned such content could be harmful if viewed repeatedly. The platform will still allow 13- to 17-year-olds to view the videos, but its algorithms will not push young users down related content “rabbit holes” afterwards. Continue reading…

Bett-Bad-Brotregelung: Niederlande streichen abgelehnten Asylbewerbern Unterstützung

[ad_1]

Donald Trump to sit down with Fox News’ Sean Hannity tonight

[ad_1]

Wed, 04 Sep 2024 22:09:10 -0400Former President Donald Trump said he was « honored » to be endorsed by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s brother and other family members, arguing that it is vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate who is the one that is « weird, » not his running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance. »I was so honored today, his brother endorsed me, and his whole family, » Trump said of Walz during his town hall event with Fox News’ Sean Hannity. « Let me tell you, there’s something weird with that guy. JD is not weird. »Trump’s comments come after a movement by Democrats on social media to paint Vance as « weird » in the aftermath of Trump’s decision to choose him, though Trump has continued to defend his running mate. »We’re not weird, » Trump said during the town hall. « That was the world of the day, ‘weird, weird, weird’… but we’re not weird guys. We’re very solid people that want our country to be great again. »Wed, 04 Sep 2024 22:54:17 -0400Former President Donald Trump blasted VP Kamala Harris on immigration in a Fox News Town Hall making the case that « she was in charge of the border » as illegal immigration surged to record levels in recent years. »They want open borders, » Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity in a town hall event on Wednesday night. « She wants open borders. Now she’s all of a sudden said, oh, I think we’re closing the borders. She was the border czar, whether you like it or not, but even if you don’t want to use that term. She was in charge of the border. » »It’s the worst border in the history of the world, not just here. There’s never been a country that allowed 21 million people to come in over a three-year period. There’s never been. And 21 million people, many of whom are from prisons, many of whom are murderers and drug dealers and child traffickers. »Immigration is the second most important issue to voters, behind the economy, heading into the 2024 election, according to recent Fox News polling.Polling also shows that Trump leads Harris on the immigration issue where he beats Harris by 14 points in a Fox News Poll, 16 points in Marist’s poll, 18 points in Marquette University’s poll, and 13 points in the Wall Street Journal’s poll; all conducted after Biden stood down from re-election.Read the full story from Andrew Mark Miller on Trump’s immigration comments. Wed, 04 Sep 2024 22:45:53 -0400Vice President Kamala Harris agreed to the final rules for an ABC News Debate against former President Donald Trump while reportedly receiving a few « assurances » from the network.ABC News released the official rules for the debate, set to take place Tuesday, which includes a rule that microphones will be muted while the other candidate is speaking.According to a CNN report Wednesday, Harris agreed to the rules after receiving « assurances » that mics could be turned on during the debate and that moderators would be able to explain unheard exchanges. »ABC News has offered assurances to the Harris campaign that if there is significant cross talk between Harris and Trump, the network may choose to turn on the mics so that the public can understand what is happening, the moderator would discourage either candidate from interrupting constantly and the moderator would also work to explain to viewers what is being said, according to the source familiar, » CNN reported.Wed, 04 Sep 2024 22:14:32 -0400Former President Donald Trump said during a Fox News town hall in Pennsylvania Wednesday evening that the U.S. is heading towards « World War III territory » as wars abroad rage under the Biden-Harris administration. « We’re heading into World War III territory, and because of the power of weapons, nuclear weapons in particular, but other weapons also, and I know the weapons better than anybody because I’m the one that bought them, » Trump said from the New Holland Arena in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The town hall, which was moderated by Fox News’ Sean Hannity, fielded questions from voters in the key battleground state, which will likely help determine the outcome of the election come Nov. 5. Read the full story from Emma Colton on highlights from Trump’s town hall. Wed, 04 Sep 2024 22:05:58 -0400[image]“Special Report” chief political anchor Bret Baier and “The Story”’s executive editor and anchor Martha MacCallum held a town hall event with former President Donald Trump on Jan. 11, 2024, which concluded a three-day marathon of candidate town halls in Des Moines, Iowa during the Republican presidential primary. Upon airing, it was the highest-rated cable news telecast of the year. The town hall with Trump, who would face off against fellow Republican candidates Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., former Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, and Vivek Ramaswamy days later in the Iowa caucuses, pulled in an average 4.4 million viewers. Trump ultimately defeated other contenders, with 51% of caucus votes. DeSantis received 21.3%, Haley earned 19.1%, and Ramaswamy saw 7.6%. Fox News Channel’s town hall with Trump prior to the caucuses also managed to bring in 576,000 viewers in the 25-54 age range. Viewership of the town hall represented 53% of the cable news share in total viewers and 47% of the cable news share in the key demographic.Wed, 04 Sep 2024 21:59:21 -0400Fox News anchor Sean Hannity asked President Donald Trump, with his administration »s tax cuts set to expire in 2025, what that means for Americans and « everybody here » in the audience. » « So I gave you the biggest tax cuts in the history of our country. If you let them. If you let the Trump tax cuts expire, which she wants to do, she wants to terminate them. If you do that, you will suffer the biggest tax increase in history, » Trump said. « There’s never been a tax increase like it on top of which she wants to add a lot of tax. This country will end up and I’ve said this a lot and I mean it. This country will end up in a depression if she becomes president. Like 1929, this will be a 1929 depression. She has no idea what the hell she’s doing, » he added. Wed, 04 Sep 2024 21:47:28 -0400During the Fox News town hall Thursday evening, former President Donald Trump touted his administration’s foreign policy achievements and criticized President Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. « Look… we have October 7th. People saw it. We have things going on in the world right now with Israel and with the Middle East is blowing up…We have Ukraine and Russia. That would never happen. That would have never happened, » Trump said. »October 7th would have never happened if I were the president, it would have never happened, » he continued. « And everybody know it. Iran was broke. They didn’t have the money for Hamas and for Hezbollah. They didn’t have the money for anybody. They wanted to get by, and we would have made a fair deal with them. I was only looking to make a fair deal with them, » he added. « But, you know, I wanted to say it so much during my term, we went four years without any, blow ups. We had no world trade center blow up. We had no radical Islamic terror. We had no radical Islamic terror, because we were very tough at the borders, that we were very tough with our statements, » he said. Wed, 04 Sep 2024 21:32:59 -0400[Video ID]Former President Donald Trump criticized Vice President Kamala Harris for being « dangerous » after she switched her position on fracking. »She wants no fracking. And she said it 100 times there will be no fracking. There will be no fracking. There will be no fracking. Then just recently she said yes, I could prove fracking. Look, this is this is a woman who is dangerous, » Trump said. « I don’t think too smart, but let’s see. But she loses her train of thought a lot. She goes, that’s why she doesn’t want to do interviews. Can you imagine her doing an interview like this or like any of them? » he added. Wed, 04 Sep 2024 21:15:57 -0400Former President Donald Trump said Thursday during the Fox News Town Hall that Vice President Kamala Harris has been « in charge » of « worst border in the history of the world. » « I said at the beginning. I said when I heard they were going to have open borders. They want open borders. She wants open borders. Now she’s all of a sudden said, oh, I think we’re closing the borders. She was the border czar, whether you like it or not, but even if you don’t want to use that term, » he said. »She was in charge of the border. It’s the worst border in the history of the world, not just here. There’s never been a country that allowed 21 million people to come in over a three year period. There’s never been. And 21 million people, many of whom are from prisons, many of whom are murderers and drug dealers and child traffickers, » he continued. »And, by the way, women traffickers, you know, women trafficking is the biggest, and they’re traffickers in women. And they’re coming in now and they’re putting them in our Social Security accounts, and they’re putting them in Medicare. And just just one thing, it’s if you take a look, take a look. Over the last week, I said this was going to happen. And it’s happening because these people are tougher than our criminals are. Criminals are nice people by comparison, » he said.Wed, 04 Sep 2024 21:22:06 -0400[Video ID]Former President Donald Trump promised to « heal » the world in the wake of the school shooting in Georgia on Wednesday. »It’s a sick and angry world for a lot of reasons and we’re going to make it better, » Trump said during his town hall with Fox News’ Sean Hannity. « We’re going to heal our world. We’re going to get rid of all these wars that are starting all over the place because of incompetence… we’re going to make it better. »The comments come after four people were killed an nine were injured at a shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia on Wednesday.President Biden was briefed on the shooting at the school, which is located about 40 miles northeast of Atlanta, while Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp announced that he is working with local authorities to investigate the incident. The shooter, 14-year-old Apalachee High School student Colt Gray, is in custody and is being charged with murder, authorities said Wednesday.Wed, 04 Sep 2024 20:52:49 -0400Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s older brother posted scathing statements about the Democratic vice presidential nominee on social media, before confirming to the media that he does not support his brother’s left-wing views but wants to keep a low-profile during the election cycle. « I was getting a lot of feedback from my friends, old acquaintances, thinking that I was feeling the same way that my brother did on the issues, and I was trying to clarify that just to friends, » Jeff Walz, Tim Walz’s older brother, told News Nation this week. »I used Facebook, which wasn’t the right platform to do that. But I will say, I don’t agree with his policies. »Reports had mounted over Labor Day weekend that Jeff was no fan of the left-wing Democratic Minnesota governor’s policies and took to his Facebook account to make his views known to friends and family. As the media reported on the social media posts over the holiday weekend, Jeff and the Harris campaign remained silent as the New York Post exclusively published the headline: « Tim Walz’s older brother is ‘100% opposed to all his ideology,’ believes VP hopeful is not ‘type of character’ who should make decisions about US’ future. »Read the full story from the Andrea Vacchiano and Emma Colton.Wed, 04 Sep 2024 20:05:10 -0400[image]Weeks ago in a post on Truth Social, former President Donald Trump stated that he was “not surprised” that Vice President Kamala Harris decided to turn down a proposed Fox News debate that would have been held this evening. “Comrade Kamala Harris has just informed us that she will NOT do the FoxNews Debate on September 4th. I am not surprised by this development because I feel that she knows it is very difficult, at best, for her to defend her record setting Flip-Flopping on absolutely everything she once believed in,” Trump wrote. “Rather than the debate on September 4th, I have agreed to do a Tele-Town Hall, anchored by Sean Hannity, for Fox. It will take place in the Great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania”In his Aug. 19 Truth Social post, Trump attacked Harris for flip flopping on the border and on fracking. Contention over aspects of the debate including rules, moderator, mute microphones, and topics have led to several canceled showdowns. Currently, the only scheduled presidential debate is September 10th on ABC.Wed, 04 Sep 2024 19:51:11 -0400[image]Expect to see tempers flare during ABC’s upcoming presidential debate on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Questions about the economy, border security and abortion will likely be three of the main policy issues discussed, while issues on LGBTQ rights, education, gun rights, and other topics will likely take a back seat. Watch for former President Donald Trump to potentially slam Vice President Kamala Harris over how she managed her debate prep, which the former president and his campaign took issue with and referred to as a “conflict of interest.” According to the Trump campaign, Harris is utilizing a high-powered attorney who is also representing Google in an upcoming federal antitrust case. The former president will also likely take Harris to task over her shifting policy positions. Meanwhile, expect Harris to slam Trump over abortion and his policy shifts on the matter. Harris will also likely hone in on how Trump is a danger to democracy, using the Jan. 6 Capitol riot as evidence. Wed, 04 Sep 2024 19:32:47 -0400[image]Trump’s pre-taped one-hour town hall will focus on the top issues impacting the country and how he is preparing for the Sept. 10 ABC debate with Vice President Kamala Harris in Philadelphia, according to Fox News’ “Hannity” team. It’s expected to also touch on his ambitions for the nation and focus on Harris’ policy flip-flops.In an interview with CNN last week, Harris was pressed on why she previously opposed fracking and now does not. “I have not changed that position, nor will I going forward,” she told Dana Bash, adding, “My values have not changed.” Harris’ now-abandoned past policy stances include eliminating private health insurance, banning oil and natural gas fracking, banning the sale of gas-powered cars by 2035, proposals she supported in 2019 during her first bid for the presidency.Wed, 04 Sep 2024 19:08:26 -0400[image]Former President Donald Trump, Republicans’ 2024 White House nominee, is sitting down for a pre-taped town hall with Fox News host Sean Hannity on Wednesday night. It’s set to air at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT and will be taped in Harrisburg, Penn.Interested viewers can tune in to Fox News Channel at 9 p.m. ET or stream it on Fox Nation after the program airs.It can also be streamed on Sirius XM radio on Fox News Channel, Channel No. 114, in cars or anywhere the radio platform is supported.Fox News Digital will also run a live blog during the event so viewers can read along with supporting coverage and watch video clip highlights.Hannity’s town hall with Trump in December managed to rake in 3.2 million viewers, including hundreds of thousands in the key 25 to 52 age demographic, according to Nielsen Research data.Viewers without a traditional cable box can watch Fox News Channel with subscriptions to YouTube TV, Sling, and Fubo TV, among others.
